Versed and Intellence
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:59:56 am »
After my surgery on the 11th, I had severe issues after I left the hospital.  It felt like the worst pain imagineable and somebody here suggested I see what anesthesia I was given.  I'm almost feeling like they're covering something up and today is the first time I've had a call back from the surgeon's office.  She verified that I was given Versed for sedation even though I provided them a list of my medications.  I told the office each time I called what my concerns were and I'm really upset that it took this long to confirm what I was given.  Are there any other issues I should now be worried about since it's been 9 days?  I just don't seem to be healing the way I anticipated.  The pain on the 9th day is no better than it was on the 1st day.

I've been in contact with my doctor and he's concerned that he hasn't rec'd any reports from them especially after I shared my concerns with him.  They are faxing the entire file to his office today.

I don't get upset easily, but I'm feeling like I've partially suffered needlessly.

I can not locate any information of the affects of Versed with Intellence other than that they can not be used together.  Any advice?

Thanks!

What exactly are your concerns here, apart from the pain etc?

I'm aware that there is an interaction between these 2 drugs, but I'm not sure what the symptoms of that interaction are.  I've had numerous surgeries and have never had the lingering problems and am wondering if there's a chance there's still an issue.

I'm also concerned that anisteologists (don't feel like finding the correct spelling) aren't doing enough research before working on HIV patients.  I met him 15 minutes before my surgery and he only then learned that I was HIV positive.  Did he not review the drug list I provided a week before the surgery?

I'm concerned because I am afraid I might have torn the internal stitches out due to the puking and vomiting that I dealt with for 3 days.

I'm mostly concerned that they wouldn't return me or my doctor's  calls for over a week.

Well if the painkiller was counterindicated, then you definitely got some shoddy treatment. YOu did everything in your power to inform all the people who were cutting you, and to no avail.  I'd be outraged about the lack of professionalism, and also I'd get some doctor who IS in your corner to marshall the forces to get you relief from the continued suffering. And to investigate your fears about recovery.

How were you made aware of this. What is the potential effects of this interaction? Versed can be pretty nasty in and of itself, my mother and grandmother had horrible times afterwards.

The interaction is not a strong one, and if it happens modest, the result being a 10-40% lowering of the Versed dose after some time. Versed given for sedation is unlikely to be the issue, since the possible lowering of dose when used with Intellence takes 7-14 days to kick in.  It is perhaps some cents short of a dollar to offer a drug for post-operative pain that is formally contraindicated, and informally may require upwards adjustment in dose, especially if this was not explained.

More concerning for me is that no-one bothered to act on your post-operative pain immediately you brought it to their attention.

I didn't know abou the interaction before hand.  I made a comment on another post a couple of days after the surgery and some (I believe it was Ann) informed me I should find out what meds I was given.  I checked a link that indicated that if I was given Versed it would interact with the Intellence but there wasn't a wealth of information beyond that.

Greg, yeah, it was me. I also linked you to the http://www.hiv-druginteractions.org/ website, but aside from saying that there may - emphasis on may - be an interaction, it gives no further information.

You really should get that pain looked at. I take it it's only at the incision site? It could be an infection or as you say, you may have ripped a stitch or two. After I had a C-section, I started coughing while lying on my back in bed and didn't have time to press a pillow over the incision site like you're supposed to. I ended up with a hernia because I tore one or two of the internal stitches. My doctor also ignored my queries about the pain I was experiencing - I couldn't stand up straight for days. I was told years later that they should have brought me back to the hospital to have the rip repaired. Go to an ER if you have to.

Thanks Ann.  The surgeon also suggested I go to the ER.  I'm kinda upset that he couldn't do something himself.  Not sure if I want an ER doctor possibly doing anything corrective since the surgery required a specialist.  Plus, our local ER kept telling me I was having migraines when in fact, I had crypto so I'm not real confident in their abilities.  They prescribed Tylenol!

The one upside, at least I've lost a few pounds.  I gained a lot of winter pounds and needed to loose some.
