HIV+ Brazilian actor died today
« on: December 11, 2011, 12:39:19 pm »
I didn't know precisely where to place this topic (as I believe the In Memoriam section is probably supposed to be about people who were close to us). If it has to be moved I apologize.

A Brazilian actor (Rodolfo Bottino, who wasn't as famous these days) died today, at age 52, of an embolism. He was submitted to the hospital for a hip surgery when it happened.

He was HIV+ since the 90's and battled lung cancer in 2006. I know this is just speculation but whenever I read something like this, I always wonder if the death itself was related to the HIV or not. Who knows, maybe it didn't have anything do to with it.

Interesting point. I've done alot of reading/research, have had discussions with my ID doc, and a long term survivor(my boss) and have come up with an analysis based on all that.
HIV is a serious life threatening virus, if not treated and monitored. There are so many things that can happen to you in life car accident, cancer etc. My doc has said that HIV if treated properly will not be what kills me. and my boss who is now almost 60 has been infected for almost 30 years. He lives a healthy vibrant life and also feels even though being +, its not what will kill him(now that he is has the virus under control after many years now.) Also to mention, my boss is in LTR with his partner for just over 20 years. His partner is Negative. I have met him and they seem really happy together. If he was able to find his partner especially in those days with HIV stigma even worse then it is today, I feel there is hope for us ;-)

This actor didn't die from something HIV-related. People die, HIV+ or not. Nevertheless, it is a shame when someone with HIV dies, especially someone who speaks out for others and fights the stigma.

Yes but you know how it is. The media here didn't bother to explain that it didn't have anything to do with HIV...so, of course, most people assume that that was the reason.

And that's how the media scares everybody and your mom. That's why I don't plan on disclosing it to anyone.

Rockin - I understand your want to not disclose it to anyone. But I think when the time is right you should at least disclose it to one person, someone who you can confide in. I think these forums are great for console since it has been for me. I too haven't disclosed it to anyone, well besides 1 person who is also +. But I do plan on telling my best friend when the time is right. I also feel maybe seeing a counselor who specializes in HIV infections or something like that will be very helpful as well.

The  embolism is not likely HIV-related. It is related to the hip surgery, which many HIV-negative people get too. Nevertheless, it is sad that he passed away. But good that he was open about about his illnesses.

"Not disclosing to anyone for the rest of your life" is wishful thinking.

It is awfully draining and next to impossible to live forever in hiding with a 'dirty' skeleton in your closet. Sooner or later it'll come back to haunt you.

Take your time, take it slow - but you'll feel a LOT better once you disclose to someone close to you (family or friend). You'll see that those you who loved you, always will- HIV or not. To begin with, disclose to someone you trust and foresee as a reliable & supportive figure.

But there's no rush. And I'm, by no means, advocating shouting your status from rooftops.

Best

For the rest of my life is too much time...I mean at the moment...near future. I don't see the point now...and my reason for this is not that I'm afraid of what people will think or something. I just don't want people to get very worried about me, I'm fine.

"Hey...how are you feeling? Are you feeling well? Is everything ok?"

Not for me sir no, thank you.
