unprotected vaginal with sex worker
« on: July 09, 2006, 09:50:42 am »
well, i am having my test tomorrow here in korea, and almost certain of a positive test.

on March 18 I had unprotected sex with a hooker, oral and vaginal...lasted for about 15 minutes.

around April 3 (thereabouts)  i first had a sore throat, and then the following symptoms

-a headache/pressure behind the eyes, especially sensitive to light or when i moved them
-high fever while sleeping or while being active during the day (like if i was moving around at my job)
-a couple days of anorexia

no rash or lymph node swelling.  and i felt fine after the doctor gave me a shot in the rear and some antibiotics for a few days.  this all lasted for about 5-6 days total

keep in mind that i had no idea about ARS until AFTER all of this happened.  i only learned about ars a few days ago (hence my testing appointment tomorrow), and its similarities to my symptoms during that time scared the crap out of me - especially considering the PERFECT timing - 2 weeks.  now i work around a lot of people, and a lot of children, but it feels too scary to be a coincidence.  what's worse, i may have passed it to my girlfriend unknowingly - i never thought i would be that 1 in 1000 chance until i heard about ARS.  we've been together for 7 weeks, she just got a comprehensive blood test last week and said nothing was wrong, but it is little consolation to me...

i will get an anonymous test.  what worries me is that if i test positive i will not be able to get treatment in this country as a foreigner - they would rather deport me.  this may soundlike a petty concern, but it's not if i got my girlfriend with it too....

Korea,

Symptoms or the lack of symptoms mean nothing when it comes to hiv infection. The ONLY way to know your hiv status is through testing.

Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus and more so from a woman to a man, even the alleged "Asian strains". While difficult is not impossible, I do expect you to come out of this ok. The test result you receive will be conclusive.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Good luck with the test, feel free to keep us posted.

Korea, your symptoms mean absolutely nothing in terms of knowing your HIV status. Neither the presence nor the absence of symptoms will ever tell you anything accurately about your status. The only way to know it reliably is by getting tested and you're doing the smart thing by doing that.

HIV is not an easy virus to transmit. It's significantly harder to transmit from female to male. You had a single unprotected incident which means that the odds are overwhelmingly in your favor against transmission having occured.

You do need to learn from this experience. You should be using a latex condom everytime you have intercourse until such time as you maybe in a securely monogamous relationship in wihch both partners have tested  negative together.

Good luck with your test. Your fears and symptoms notwithstand I expect you will come out of this ok. Also, if any of your symptoms persist you should discuss them with your doctor.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

Korea,

Sometimes things are just coincidental. Hang in there, you have an excellent chance of testing negative.

I've heard this 1 in 1000 chance from passing HIV from an infected female to a male during unprotected vaginal sex. Is this really accurate??? Can an expert please reply......

If so what is the greatest risk and why is the greatest risk for a heterosexual male? Help me in my ignorance.....

Joe,

What you are doing is called thread hijacking and it is not a practice we want to see on this forum. You need to read the Welcome Thread and then you need to go back to your own thread to ask your questions.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Well, just for grins and giggles about joes concern.  I had an MD tell me that the odds of female-to-male transmission are extremely high.  The thing is, you only have to get in touch with that 1 in that 1,000 (or whatever that number is.

It's like playing poker.  The odds of getting a Royal Flush are very high.  The thing is, all you need is that one deal of the cards to get that Flush.  It can be the first one, or the 1,000th one.

That's why it ain't worth it to gamble.

well, i do agree that the "1 in 1000" odds are of little comfort to most in my situation, especially when accompanied by well documented symptoms...

but i understand the entire point of this particular forum is comfort.

well, my result came back negative.  of course, i got slightly obsessive and started thinking...what if they read the results for the wrong test number (anonymous center) and all this nonsense, but i will be OK.  i still plan to get re-tested at 6 months just to completely reassure myself.  i've learned and i will not repeat my mistake.

thank you all for the support.  you are right for not acknowledging symptoms. seems like all the symptom information out there does nothing but spark paranoia...

cheers.

Korea,

Congratulations on your negative result!

Just remember to use condoms for penetrative sex in the future and you will avoid hiv infection.  Use them without exception outside of a monogamous relationship where you both have tested negative.

Cheers,

Morgan
