Cortisone Injection And HIV
« on: July 29, 2013, 03:25:11 am »
Pain doc has recommended these injections.  I've had back issues for years.  Had surgery for L4, L5, and S1 discs.  I was already hesitant from the beginning, after the meningitis deaths.  I don't think those pharmacies are regulated yet, no?  But, I have read so many negative things about them, too-- how they don't really work well to they can cause more issues.

My main question is that on every site, it says to not have these, if you have a current infection.  They all say it can weaken your immune response to the infection.  Would HIV infection be considered a current infection, in that context?  Or, are they talking about other kinds of infections?

Having HIV, I am wondering whether any benefit would be outweighed by any possible complication.  At this point, I'm starting to think it isn't worth it.  I would be interested in whether anyone has had them and whether they thought they were beneficial.  But, seeing as this is the Living forum, I am mainly wondering whether it isn't a good idea with HIV.  Most sites say to only have these done at reputable surgical centers or hospitals, where the chances of some infection will be lower.  This is being done at the pain clinic.

Teddy, I get Cortisone injections regularly in my knees (quarterly).  While steroids can lower immune systems, it's more Prednisone that does that, not so much Cortisone.

They do give pain relief, instantly if done right.  My bone doctor does it and he's excellent.  It lasts for a good amount of time and has enabled me to exercise a bit.

Hell, if they were obtainable by a prescription I'd inject myself.  That's how much I like Cortisone.  I wouldn't worry about an immune collapse, that won't happen with Cortisone.  My doctor (HIV dr) knows about them and has no problems.  He won't, however, let me take Prednisone (unless it was required for something serious).

On a side note, Cortisone, and all steroids, raise blood sugar.  It lasts for approximately 5 days.  So I monitor my sugar more closely for the first week after an injection.  I don't believe I've ever seen you mention blood sugar issues, but if this is an issue for you, just be aware.

Hello Teddy,

Not a direct comparison but thought I would chuck it in.

I take 200 micrograms off Fludrocortisone per day for low blood pressure.

It has certainly helped , and probably prevented a broken bone or two.

My  t cells have climbed back to what is my top 350 to 400 after PCP 5 or so years ago and I have remained neg V/L

Best wishes

Michael

Hi Ted , I have had 3 of those injections in my back and one in my neck . I have another pinched nerve in my neck now that's been killing me for over a month and will probably have another one shortly .

They have always brought about instant relief that has lasted 15 years or more in some areas , so they work very well for me . I have had them done on and off HIV treatment with no ill effects .

I've had them twice in my shoulder where I have an old gymnastic injury. It clears it up for about 2 or 3 years till I pull it out carrying grocery bags or something. It's a small needle that hardly hurts and by the time I check out of the office it doesn't hurt anymore.

The sports medicine doctor is aware of my HIV and my HIV doc gives me a referral.

Because of CIDP I was one month on prednisone 60mg a day, now reducing at 45/40 a day, they told me it is quite risky because HIV/leishmaniasis co-infection and still with CD4 below 200, I had already 50% chances to get the leishmaniasis back before starting prednisone (recidives very common in people with HIV), so with prednisone my chances were even higher but I still don't have any symptoms of that and I am doing really well.
So, I don't think some cortisone injections will put you at high risk of anything, specially if you don't have any other serious co-infections.

Thanks all for the helpful info.  After reading them, I am beginning to think they may help and provide some relief.  I'm glad to hear there is no issue with the injections with HIV infection.

Hey ted..
I just had one two weeks ago in my shoulder for a gym injury.
My HIV Doc referred me and the specialist who administered the shot was fully aware of my status.

no issues.
