Today is a day to remember people that lived their lives honestly - who had the courage to tell the world that they would no longer buckle under the pressure of a society that did not want them to do so.

I think on a day like today it's important to remember that this isn't just me honoring my people. These aren't my people. These are our people. They are our brothers and sisters in that they are all human beings - human beings that had hopes and dreams, mothers and fathers, siblings, best friends and others who depended on them. These were men that worked hard to fit into a society that told them they would never live up to its image of manhood. These were women who knew the fear of walking down a dark alleyway at night just as much as any other woman.

These were people like me - yes. But also people like you. They are you.

I hope everyone takes some time to reflect on a society where people like this are murdered every single day. I also encourage everyone to mention it to a friend or family member today and spread some knowledge so that the ignorance that causes things like this to happen slowly dissipates. It's our privilege and our obligation as human beings to speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves.

Mouse, what a sobering link.  I could add a few names, but for the life of me I couldn't recall them, because their deaths were in the '70s and I just cannot recall that far back.

However, memory aside, I am thankful for you and those like you who have had the courage to head on into the world with your head held high and a song in your hearts.

Trust me, I will NEVER forget.
