Title: Recommendation for HIV specialist in Birmingham, AL
Post by: blueyedboi20 on December 30, 2013, 12:40:25 am
Currently I live in Tuscaloosa, AL and the only ID doctor in town was incredibly rude to me. I wanted to go to a specialist after my initial diagnosis, but was talked into seeing the doctor here because he was a "guru". So almost two months later at my appointment to start treatment, I'm asking him all of these questions I had compiled about side effects and what not. He stops me in the middle of it and says, "We need to move along, I have other patients to see." I just started bawling because I feel like I've wasted so much time waiting on this jerk. I started Atripla anyways despite my reservations because I feel like I need to be on treatment NOW! I want to find someone who will listen to my questions and concerns and pick a medicine that is best for me.

I'm not certain about infectious disease doctors in Tuscaloosa but I live in Birmingham and have received really good treatment at the 1917 clinic . They offer a full range of services from counseling or therapy to dental .

Jeff thank you so much for both your replies! I'm looking into the 1917 clinic as well as some other ID doctors in B'ham. I know 1917 is a research facility and at UAB, I just wasn't sure if it being a "clinic" if it might be the same as Maude Whatley here in Tuscaloosa. I think the reason the doctor here was so rude is he is used to dealing with crackheads and stuff who probably just do what he says and don't question him.

It's probably not the best language to refer to patients struggling with both HIV and substance abuse issues -- something you will find anywhere in the US once you are diagnosed with HIV. I mean, so you want people to call you a whore because you have HIV? Same thing -- tis about empathy.

The 1917 clinic is a top notch HIV clinic and they serve the needs of all segments of the HIV poz community in the Birmingham area . Simply put it as good as it gets in Alabama and as far as I can tell I have received as good of treatment here as I did in Chicago and California .
