Alright...ante up. What was your take this holiday? Anything special things or particular gifts you wanna blab about? And "gifts" aren't just things that come in a box or a bag, ya know. Yes, that sounds all sappy and cliched, but it's still true.

Here's mine:

This was the year of clothes. I got lots of new gear to wear, especially some fabu new PJ's (that I'm inaugurating right now). I was actually rather surprised by the amount that I ended up with.

OMG - I have got vittles like you wouldn't believe goin' on in my fridge now. INCLUDING the chocolate peanut butter candies and bacon wrapped green beans. BUT...I also have some pound cake that my oldest sister made that out of this world delicious.

Above all, once the early dust ups settled, I got what may very well be the last holiday gathering with all of the immediate family assembled. My oldest niece is getting married this May and will be immediately shipping off to Alaska with her new hubby. My nephew is investigating a potential move to Japan (he just returned from a lengthy visit there this summer). My folks are getting older. Pop especially has slowed down considerably this past year, and he's had so many surgeries. Who knows? There may be other holidays to come, but the variables increase over time, ya know?

That last part there...that's the main thing, the core of what I would have wanted out of the holidays. I'm seriously not much of the Christmas type, but some peace on earth, some good will & glad tidings? That's something I can get behind.

So there it is. Put a bow on it. It's wrapped for another year.

As far as gifts go, I didn't get what I REALLY wanted, RASCAL . The "old folks" feel that one schnauzer is enough to handle. You can never have enough of those dogs in my opinion...

I received a PINK set of luggage. How embarrassing. I don't have time to return it before I leave for Belgium on the 26th.

The best part of Christmas for me was holding & playing my 15 month old great nephew all day.

Now I just can't wait to get to Herman. 28 days, the longest period of time the 2 of us have been together, so far...

My uncle gave me a really hideous grey sweater that I'm going to return. My mom gave me a poster (that I can't hang up because I don't have my own room anymore) and a Spongebob lamp (... I don't like Spongebob).

My niece gave me socks.

I got a new backpack from the other half

from mum, later in the year (april, when shopper dockets starts again), I'm getting a hdtv (42inch), also got two pairs of socks, and some new shirts
a stack of blank dvds from dad

I bought myself an mp3 player (iriver, 8gig one), and a new computer chair

and I think one of the best things, got to spend half the day with the other halfs kids, (they got the same mp3 players, but 2gig versions), so we spent half the day finding music that they liked (yay for mininova.org)... (I bought them glow in the dark stars for their bedroom ceilings :-D

I didn't get to make it to the dysfunctional family gathering. My ear was bothering me. I was surprised and got a few gifts.....My roomie gave me some nice candles and hair accessories. I especially love the one like chopsticks, I don't know what they are called...My oldest sister got me some bath things like shower gel, bath beads and a sponge thing..my bff got me some Tupac butane lighters, Tupac dog chain, and a porno...Did I mention that my bff is the porno Queen and a dominatrix.....

Did I also mention I love Tupac? So much so that when he died, I got his alias "Makaveli" tatted on my right leg....Yeah, I was a groupie...

And my other sister got me some type of shirt, me and the oldest sister had our presents mixed up when given to us...I guess no one thought to write the names on it.....I thought I was ghetto but damn!!!!

OK, since we're ante-ing up:

I got a watch, a picture, some bath gel, candle, $10 from my pop, a new coffee mug, and a beautiful picture of my mum (my fave pic of her) with a couple poems under it that my bro wrote (he's a published poet in several countries). That last one was the most meaningful and the most treasured. And a good day with the family, which was surprising, actually no smoke. I think everyone's trying to honor my mum's memory by not rocking the boat. My granddaughter (who's 7) has a wild crush on my nephew (who's like 28). My grandson was totally unimpressed with his new clothes (he's three) and threw them all off to the side when he opened them.

On the way home, I noticed how aggressive everyone was driving. And then while watching t.v. last night, I noticed all the "after-Christmas day sales" they're pushing on everyone. No wonder people are so stressed out. Ah, till next year, God bless us everyone.

I didn't get any "loot", but what I got was much better. I spent my first ever Christmas day with the love of my life. Back when we were first together 14 years ago, and for the next several Christmases, he always went off to Scotland to be with his brother's family. It used to be a bit of a sore point with me ... to say the least. This year, we spent the day and evening in front of the telly, cuddling and eating huge plates of food (cooked by his housemate). It was a very quiet, simple day, but it was bliss.

It was the best present ever. It's something that will never wear out, never go out of fashion, never get lost, never break down... but the memory of the day will live on in my heart, untarnished, forever. Who needs presents when you got love?

We had a mostly-nice Christmas. I got lots of clothes, which I need. Jeans with rips are fine sometimes (especially the ones with the rips in the seat

), but not cool for everyday wear. I got some nice tools and accessories from my hubby, which are always appreciated. I got hubby a Garmin gps/ navigation thing for the car. Neither of us have a sense of direction, so hopefully it'll help out when we're traveling. Right now, it's set to 'British English Daniel', which sounds kind of hot, for a synthesized voice (I just love those British accents). All in all, it was fun, spent time with the family, friends, and cats and played with our toys! I hope everybody had a nice Christmas.

I spent Christmas day with my neighbors, and their 3 little girls. As always, I'm humbled by their generosity and caring. So instead of spending the day alone and depressed, I actually managed to enjoy myself. And I now know more about Dora the Explorer than I ever thought I'd know. For all of this, I am truly thankful. In fact, the way I've been struggling with depression lately, it's practically a miracle.

Oh, I also bought myself a used 2006 Scion xB for Christmas. My friends are calling it my mid-life-crisis-mobile.

Whatever. I hardly think a used economy car qualifies as a mid-life crisis car -- I thought that had to be a Mustang or a Corvette. Still, it sure is fun to drive.

Yesterday, Kurt and I wanted to fix a nice dinner and invite a few friends over to share it with us. Most everyone was busy. They had family obligations and relatives coming in from out of town or they were going to visit relatives in other states. Final result was we had one friend who had no family here and was not going away or had other obligations.
So Christmas morning Kurt and I shared our gifts to each other and with Buster the kitty. He always likes it when he gets new toys.
Then our friend Lois came over for cocktails and dinner. She had bought a fabulous bottle of wine especially for dinner. It was a lovely evening. She was in good form ( for someone nearly 80 years old). Kurt grilled filet mignon on the gas grill just the way we like it. We made a lot of toasts to our departed friends and drank a bit too much and laughed a lot. It was a great way to end the Christmas holiday. And dear Kurt, who doesnt drink at all anymore, puts up with us and gives Lois a ride home while I do dishes.

I got a new stereo and speakers for my car. with installation promised soon. A silver necklace that says mom. A $50 dollar AMEX gift card. Purfume. A hands free can opener. One of those 20 questions electronic games. A few books. An Alfred Hitchock DVD. A little bag you hang from your car's a/c vent so you dont loose your cell phone or other small item. and an Avon Dazzling Lighted Village because my mom compulsivly buys from Avon.

I had a wonderful time with my family. I have a ton of "treats" to eat, and I got some wonderful presents, notably a new Skaagen watch and a black leather jacket !

My co-worker G. did such a sweet thing for me...she knows I have my "celebrity autograph" collection, so she got me a basketball autographed by Magic Johnson! (he was in Birmingham the other day signing things).

I would rather have had a photo, or just the autograph on paper....a basketball does NOT go with my decor....

I had a really great Christmas. I got a pair of black jeans(which actually fit like they are supposed to) and a very pretty black sweater. My little Robert got quite abit of stuff. Flashlight, camera, Vtech laptop, fishing rod, 2 bath sets, A bath toy,toolbox, really cute outfit, a toy tanker truck and a couple other things. I got the joy of seeing his face light up. Which is actually the best thing in the entire world to me. I also got to bring my oldest son down for lunch and there was no fighting. What a great Christmas. Cristy

Santa was good to me...got me a new digital camera (the size of a deck of cards and 12 mb pix..very nice), new roller blades (my old ones broke after 15 years of abuse), shirts and sweaters... the dogs were the most spoiled with lots of toys, chewy things and they had real turkey for dinner.
It was nice and quite, just mom, dad and grandma (who thinks she is still in Florida...poor grandma she is really getting too old)

It was a good christmas.. I got some great new kitchen gadgets, clothes and a new macbook.

I also had the opportunity to spend 5 days with my mom, my brother, his wife and their two children (18 mos and 3 years). It was the best christmas that any big fat jew should be allowed to have.

Ooh, Alan in black leather!

I had an interesting Christmas. I went to see the family on Saturday, only to realize once I arrived there I had left my Norvir at home. So, I came home the next day, which was Sunday. But while there, we made the most of it and went out for a nice dinner (fillet Mignon, medium rare, covered with crab meat and hollandaise sauce. YUM!

I also spent some quality time with my mother, which I really enjoyed, although she wanted me to stay longer. I had to promise to spend some time with her once the weather warms up, which I will.

Sunday night, I spent the evening in my back yard around a fire. It was the solstice celebration I didn't think I would be able to have and it was a delight. The incredible full moon made it ever so memorable and a really delightful occasion.

I spent Xmas eve with friends, which was nice.

Xmas day I spent delightfully alone. I did collect a number of material things this year, mostly clothes. But I think what I treasured the most was an entire day of uninterrupted peace and quiet.

I spent part of the day watching the first season of the original Star Trek, which my sister gave me. I didn't realize until then that there colored doors, etc. I originally watched them on a black and white TV.

Anyway, it was a nice holiday.

Favorite thing - Burberry Black Wallet that I have been wanting for a while (thanks Auntie). I also got gift cards, money, a lava lamp keychain (from my niece), a sweater, candles, and some other little things. My favorite part was watching my niece open her gifts. I got her a digital camera for kids since she broke mine a few months ago.

My parents bought her the Wi, which was enjoyed by the whole family. My dad is still playing it. We may have to have an intervention.

wow, I've been having withdrawls! For Christmas, we had our cable modem go capooey and someone finally came today to fix it! Hubby and i got our "usual" gift from my parents - money and a certificate for them to keep the grands for a week so we can go away. Best gift ever! Kids loaded up big time and all were happy. Mum and dad got it right this year

As soon as Mini wakes up from her nap, she'll happily post in her thread about all the cool stuff she got. Our youngest - she'll be 4 on St. Patrick's Day - didn't get into the holiday much. She was more annoyed at all the noise and the other kids getting in her way when she was trying to watch her Pooh DVD. She handed all her gifts back to me to open and then set them all aside. Oh, well, maybe next year.

My cousin got stationed back in WV as a recruiting officer for the Army after living in OK for 15 years. He has 3 kids that came with him and are the same ages as our #1, #2, and #4. He is officially a single dad raising the kids on his own. It was good to see all 9 kids back together again Christmas night. It had been 19mths since they'd seen each other and acting like they were never apart.

All in all it was a wonderful fairly stress-free day. Then yesterday, we all went shopping and grabbed up a bundle of bargains for next year.

Oh I forgot to mention, obviously Jan and I both thought we needed some positive 'reinforcement' of our faith....I sent her a little heart embroidered pillow that said "Faith" and she sent me a lovely silver "Faith Key" with a prayer included.....we got a kick out of the fact that we both chose things that had to do with Faith!

Love you Jan -- Keep the Faith honey! Things are going to be brighter in '08.

Mine was a quite estranged visit to Louisiana. I was left with having to make a considerable effort to maintain a semblance of enjoyment. The plan was to gather at my sister's house and have a nice family get-together with sister and her two daughters and respective nephews. It all went well the first day. On the second day we made a great Cajun meal and gathered to open presents (the day before Xmas). Then, after presents were opened.....My sister turned weird on us. Yes, the cultish christian fundamentalist is hellishly alive and speeding towards insanity. It's a pity but she's locked up her mind somewhere and refuses to listen to reason, or a facsimile thereof. Much like a balking jackass who's intent is not to take one more step forward.
Needless to say, we scattered to the winds.

My nieces picked up their kids and went home or to other relatives to visit. I phoned friends (naturally, a gay couple) for refuge and they graciously provided me with a room in their home. Stayed with them till my return flight on the eve of 25th. It was a great visit and enjoyed being with them.
I had booked with SkyBus. I would realize a total savings of at least $200 by flying into Gulfport, Mississippi via cheap airfare and then renting a car to drive 3 hrs to Lafayette, LA.
Yeah. It all turned to shit. After I returned the rental car at the airport I made my way to checking for my flight. The flight was cancelled. No SkyBus agent to greet us with the bad news of a Christmas night cancellation. We passengers were told by a third party and simply dropped into the chaos of a sudden cancellations realm. All of the other airlines that flew out of that little airport were shut down for the night. Needless to say, an emergency exercises in self sufficiency was had by all. I later learned though the news, that there were other cancellations that followed and many, many others were stranded too.
SkyBus! may they never realize black ink on their end-of-the-year statements! They could have at least provided a SkyBus agent at the counter who could help us rebook though other airlines. (SkyBus claimed, through 3rd party representation, that they were booked full on flights for the next two nights and couldn't possibly get us out till the 28th!)
I had to book a last-minute room for the night in Gulfport, Mississippi. Then purchase a $350 one-way ticket home the next day through Delta Airlines. Then, because of Delta's own delays, had to reschedule that flight for a later one as I would have missed the connecting flight in Atlanta. Got home -- eventually-- at 10:30 pm on the 26 of December, 2007. But it felt much, much later than that.

Loot: a 12 mp/5X Zoom Kodak EasyShare digital camera from partner. A pair of red, plaid flannel pj's from my sister, and, a gizmo to hook up to my cell phone to have hands free conversations (not bluetooth), from one niece. I believe it routes phone speaker through radio speakers in the car. That will help tremendously with my tone-deafness as I have trouble hearing if there is any background noise on my end. Like, at airport terminals!
Also, a fleece pullover from my other niece. I was able to spend time (albeit, short lived) with my one nephew who has grown up so much since the last time I laid eyes on him, 2 yrs ago.
Somehow, I had forgotten of previous experiences and this year had a hard message: There's no place like home.

Mike, where are my live crawfish, king cake, bushels of fresh okra, Cafe Dumonde, and begneit mix? The only thing I miss about living in Louisiana is the food. Glad you are safely nessled back home.

mum, those food items.....well, I ate them.

I grow okra in the garden successfully--except for this past summer. The okra seedlings wilted after they grew 3" tall. By the time I replanted it was too late for a decent yield. Maybe next year.

Okra won't grow here in the northern tundra. I've tried growing them inside under artificial sunlight lamps, but they just need it warmer and more humid than I can make the house. I have to plant most of my vegitables in storage containers so that we can pull them out of the garage during the day and take them back in at night so that the deer and rabbits don't feast on them. Once they get pretty tall, we can leave them out. Until then, the only thing i'm feeding are the wild critters.
