Would they take medicade? :P
Sounds lovely and I could sure use a change..
Guess I have to keep buying lottery tickets, cuz thats the only way this girl is gonna get there............
-
You know, it may be a winning idea to have this particular cruise on the 2009 ballot, for consideration. Costwise it's not pricey as long as one does a roomshare........room and food cost are included......just that, it runs a little more than a the land oriented AMG gathering when one factors in the extra cost incurred for any excursions taken. Excursions, with this particular outfit, are arranged to be with other HIV+ exclusively so they would offer a comfort zone as well. Some cruisers don't do excursions at all (or anymore) and just walk around the port towns instead of the adventuresome excursions.
Thing is, too.......I wonder if this would complicate processes of the Grants Committee disbursing monies. One has to put a deposit down at time of booking and the balance is paid in full well before the cruising dates.

Only 296 days and counting ;D
-
Well I printed out the reservation form and called "Paul", will know in the next 2 weeks if we can make it, right now I'd say 95% yes we will be going. Sounds like a nice trip.
-
I'm with Ubotts on this one. Living on disability doesn't afford one the luxury of these things. It sounds like a blast though!
-
I plan to be on board, along with other SIN-NYC members...anchor's aweigh
-
If you want to go, you can. There was lots of guys on the last one who are on disability. They either had a sponsor or they paid a little each month. It's not expensive. Besides, my friends on disability make more money that I do at work!
Good luck,
Sam
-
Booked, vacation approved and just waiting for the day to come!!!
Now to figure out what kind of costume to wear ... :-(
Hugz,
Tom
-
My roommate just told me it's going to be segregated (gay separate from straight). I wonder why? I would like to meet all people with HIV, not just gay boys.
I think that's a big mistake. I feel like I'm segregated enough as it is!

Joe
That's really not the case...
We are all on the same ship and there will be both mixed (gay/straight) evens as well as events catering strictly to heteros and gays. The cruise originally was a hetero only cruise and several years ago they started allowing everyone with HIV to join. We'll still be seeing our old friends and the excursions will be joint. The idea is to broaden the number of people going. It'll going to be a fun cruise.
Tom
-
I have been on other Gay cruises before but never a cruise dedicated to poz people. This one seems interesting. I hope I get to go.
-
I wish they could figure out a way to make it more family friendly. I looked on the website and no where did it mention any activities for children or even if children were allowed. Not everyone who is HIV+ is over 20+, single, or married with out children. And, there are some of us where our pozzie IS our child. It would be great if they could incorporate entire families. There's a lot of support that kids could get from each other, not to mention meeting kids "just like them" - whether they are jr. pozzies or children w/ pozzie parents.
Mum
-
Well we made a tough decision. The 5% won out. We own a small place up on Beech Mountain in North Carolina and decided to take both our families up for the summer. I'd love to enjoy the company of other HIV positive folks but family first. Maybe next year. Anyway going up to the cool mountains is a nice getaway from the heat of Florida.

It sounds like a great idea but perhaps that would be another cruise. Perhaps on a Disney ship which caters more to children than the one currently planned out. Maybe you should contact the organizer of the cruise and share the idea to see if he's heard from others in the same situation. Paul (the organizer) is a very experienced travel agent and I am sure he'll work with you on this.

For those of you thinking about going, Paul just indicated there is a special $100 deposit for reservations if you place them by 1/21. Normally, there is a $250 deposit required. The balance is due in early August.

I faxed my form today to Paul...I guess I will get my confirmation soon...Any ideas on good flights and a good time to wait to book the round trip, what time to arrive in Ft. Lauderdale that Sunday, what time to book flight home the following Sunday. I know I need to bring a suit or sports jacket and I guess a costume for Halloween... EEK!!! I'm scary enough!!!
Jody :D
-
Frankly I think it would be a hoot, unfortunately between Jeromy and my desire to attend AMG in August, family commitments in NY for May & June, and a recent offer from friends for a Las Vegas trip in July....I'm thinking it is kinda impossible for either of us to get the time off from work (and me not yet employed adds to the issue)
We do want you guys to have a ball though....so I'm gonna send my friend who was born with only one testicle.
-
We're going to try and do the cruise, but, between AMG and bills, it'll be a while 'til we have a clue as to if we'll be able to go. I wasn't all that interested in it initially, but after reading up on it, it sounds like a blast!
David
-
An idea, I would like to throw in the ring for a future AMG is www.windjammer.com (http://www.windjammer.com). They have a selection of cruises and boats, the guests can assist in sailing the vessel or play and party. Given the size of these sailboats, the entire guest list would be our group as a charter. Have the best day

:) Very good...the more the merrier! :) We flew in the night before for the pre-cruise party and so I wasn't feeling rushed the morning of debarkation. Halloween was to fun! I can't remember the last time i laughed and smiled so much. ;D

Hi all. I, as well as some of the last SIN-NYC gang, and maybe a few more, will be back on board creating havoc. I / we had a great time, met some great people, and I'm looking forward to do it again. Hope to see some of you on board as well

On the airfare front, contact Paul and he'll be able to help on the best price. He's got a discount established with American Airlines but there may be alternatives. It's always better to book sooner than later. I would get to Fort Lauderdale the day before so you can attend the pre-cruise party. Also, you never know what the weather will be like so it's a bit of insurance to make sure you are not delayed and end up missing the ship. Paul can be reached via email at paul@universal-travel.com
Everyone else thinking about going, it is fun and you don't have to participate in *everything*. Sometimes it's just good to get away from it all and enjoy the calm of the seas with people waiting on you. I was unplugged (no computer or cell phone) for a whole week. It was incredible and I am eagerly looking forward to the next opportunity to become 'unplugged'.

Hello Kim and and others who may be wondering, Paul responded and the answer is yes. As long as one person is POZ then you can bring a negative partner or friend.
Hope this helps :)

Message from Paul copied from PozHealth@yahoogroups.com
Hello to All,
I am the person who coordinates and arranges the annual Poz Cruise Retreat.
I have been quite fortunate that this year we have two of the very best
guest speakers who will be on board with us to lead informative lectures and
workshops in addition to an open Q&A session. Both nationally known, Dr Michael
Wohlfieler and Nelson Vergel present clear, concise and highly informative
discussions.
It has proven over the last couple of years to be quite an exciting event
with a perfect blend of both social and educational events. Strong friendships
develop and yes we've even had proposals and weddings
The strong sense of bonding and community is like an aphrodesiac. It is contagious!
Each year it gets larger and larger and we hope that one day we can charter an entire ship. Ahhh wouldn't that be something special?
The dates are October 26 - November 2 and I invite you to please visit our
web sites.
www.hivcruise.com for our gay guests while www.positivecruise.com is for our straight guests. Rates begin at only $609.00 per person plus taxes.
All the best,
Paul Stalbaum

We'd better be careful there; you never know who might just decide to sink that ship! :D Seriously, we'd like to join in, but I'm not sure if we can this year (I just got another hospital bill from '06 ???); plus, we'll be doing the AMG thing. Hopefully, we can participate next year if not this year.

I am very excited about this. I've looked into gay cruises before and they have been very expensive. This one is very reasonable. (Even for a single room)
I've only taken one cruise before and it was a four day cruise. I did not meet any gay guys on board and I was placed in the dining room with a family of four ladies. Two in my age range. They were nice, but it was a bit awkward. The highlight of that cruise was the dining. The highlight of this one will be meeting people.

Paul is once again offering the chance to reserve for this

Yeah!!! I sent in my registration form for me and my partner.
Our plans are to be in the US 3 weeks, begining with a visit to a friend in Hueston for a couple of days.
Then hit Florida for a week and a half and end off with the cruise.
Very exciting indeed.

The HIV Cruise Retreat Raises $6000 for HIV/AIDS Causes
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., April 8 (AScribe Newswire) -- Last October, a group of 225 HIV positive men and women went sailing away from the worries of the disease while obtaining key health information and raising funds for HIV non profit projects. In this 10th year, the retreat raised $6,000 for the non-profit Program for Wellness Restoration for their project to support the HIV international program of Doctors Without Borders. Over $30,000.00 has been raised over the past 10 years.
"It is great to have people who have been challenged for years with fears of death enjoy life in the company of others who are on the same boat as they are," said Nelson Vergel, AIDS activist and lecturer on the cruise. "I am glad our project leader Paul Stalbaum has been able to make this possible for so many people to spend a week sailing the seas at affordable prices while they get key medical information and bond with others," added Vergel.
"As a doctor who treats hundreds of HIV patients, I must say that spending a week with so many people having fun while being helped with medical information is an ideal scenario," said Dr Michael Wohlfieler, a leading South Florida HIV physician and featured speaker on the cruise.
Sam, a long term survivor from San Francisco and participant of last year's cruise said: "We remember all too well when the virus was considered more or less a signal that it was time to get one's affairs in order. Thankfully those days are behind us. A week like the one I had on this cruise reminds me that life is rich and full and when the good times roll it can be downright amazing."
"I will definitely not miss this year's cruise!" added Sam.
"This year's cruise promises to be even better with a very exciting itinerary sailing over Halloween from Ft. Lauderdale with stops at Grand Turk (Turks and Caicos), St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Princess Cays," said cruise organizer Paul Stalbaum. "We will actually have separate fun activities for gay and straight groups, with some intermingling," added Stalbaum.
For more information please call Paul at 800-735-0401 ext 241 or visit his two web sites: http://www.hivcruise.com for the gay group and http://www.positivecruise.com for the heterosexual group.

Hi there from Wet & Windy England.........
I would love to attend this cruise. I normally visit the States 4-5 times a year, but since starting meds in March, i'm so very worried about entering the States.
I would need to get thru customs at New York and then probably entering the ship itself.
I so want to be able to go on this trip, but dont want to be found out at the port of entry into the US.
Can or does anyone have advise? Are there any other Brits planning or going on this trip?
All feedback is greatly appriciated.

The mix of people plus the activities on board make this a full and exciting week. Of course, you can also just layout and read or whatever all week too. There's really no pressure to be anywhere at a specific time other than making sure you're on the ship when it sails at the end of each day.
Also, the cruise is a great value because you get you food and drink (non-alcoholic) plus room for one price. The food onboard is excellent and changes from day to day. Of course, for those who are into a routine mealwise, you can get your sandwich and pizza every day as well.
Hope to see you aboard !!

Well, there better be cheap drinks, plenty of em (alcoholic), and a friendly cabin-mate I can find; cuz I'm probably signing up in May. Thank god for fat books to read in the sun. And my trusty blue Speedos.

That trip sounds amazing! I don't think I will be able to afford it until I am done with school though. So maybe in 3 yrs :)
-
I just did an early cruise two weeks ago visiting Grand Turk and Princess Cay. Princess is an awesome cruiseline and definitely a first class operation. I think there is great value especially if you just do the local beaches. At Grand Turk, the beach is right at the end of the dock free to all as is Princess Cay. The color of the water is an incredible bright blue and the beaches are nice and clean. Considering the fact the cruise includes your room and food, it's a great deal for a full week out on the high seas.
-
How much are the tickets to the pre-cruise party?
-
I guess all of us poor people should find a central meeting place and catch the hound. I don't think anyone on disability could afford a cruise. And I agree Mum, it could've been thought out with people with kids in mind. Maybe this is just one of those cruises that is one step away from an orgy.
I know that last comment might have seemed harsh but to me that is what it seems like and whoever responded to Mum, I forget who, could've been more polite. The response sounded a bit catty. >:(

You are free to your opinion but I have to defend the cruise. Being on disability myself I do understand how the cost could be an issue for some but considering what you get it's a very good deal. If it wasn't for my employed partner who has wanted to give me the world since my PML diagnosis I don't know if I could go. I'm sure connections are made just as there are at AMG but the cruise is far from an orgy. For me living the past 3 years with PML I found the cruise spiritual and powerful. Being part of such a large crowd it allowed me to be myself and actually tell people I have PML (rather than stroke) without being judged. In fact just the opposite happened I was welcomed with love and support. When I stayed behind so my partner could take an excursion I physically could not there were plenty of others who stayed on the ship who helped me in the dining room and to mingle with on the decks. I did send Mum a PM previously to tell her about Camp Sunrise in Ohio for kids and I also suggested she contact the organizer of the cruise to discuss families and children because this may be a venue they could consider in the future.

Jeff--
I guess I stand corrected but I will admit I was going by the posts here...."Well, there better be cheap drinks, plenty of em (alcoholic), and a friendly cabin-mate I can find" and one where someone said take the kids to Disneyland or something.
I am glad YOU at least will get something out of the cruise that appears to be spiritual and allows you to express yourself. But I still say some of the shipmates will be getting their freak on and will forget the purpose of the cruise. I guess all I can say is have at it.
-

I suggested the Disney Cruiselines may be more fun for kids since mostg cruise lines tend to cater to the adults. I also suggested in my post Mum contact Paul because he may know about other venues focused on children with HIV. I don't believe my response was catty in the least and if it came across that way, I offer my most humblest apologies.
The cruise is geared to having people meet new friends and to connect with others in the same situation. It definitely isn't the wild orgy and if it was, where was I. It's just a good time and a chance to escape life's pressures for a week. As Jeff indicated, this is a great way of meeting others who are positive and realizing you're not alone in the world which many of us feel in our daily lives. It's also a time to learn new things about others and yourself.

It's hard to believe the 2008 POZ cruise retreat is only four and a half months away, 132 days to be exact. ;) Jeffrey and I have been planning for this even before the 2007 cruise disembarked in Miami. The friendships and memories from last year will last a life time. I still smile thinking about the fun at the Halloween/costume party, I honestly never laughed so hard. Then during the Newlywed Game even I felt safe enough to get in front of a crowd where I was deemed Sophia and Jeffrey was Molly Goodhead. ;D Straight, gay, white, black, male, female, healthy or sick we had one thing in common...HIV/AIDS. As for the passengers not part of the group we found them just as accepting and fun. There was the 40 something straight couple who asked Jeffrey in detail about his piercings (LOL) and then the elderly lady from the dolphin encounter who told me she sees the love Jeffrey has for me in his eyes and how he takes care of me. Last year was so much more than just a vacation! We feel lucky to have the opportunity to go again his year.
Counting down the days! You still have time too!
Jeff

Price wise, this is the most economical gay cruise that I have ever seen.

Only 88 days! Thank goodness the splint is off my hand. Excursions are picked. Still need costumes!
Super excited! :)
Who else is going?

I guess all of us poor people should find a central meeting place and catch the hound. I don't think anyone on disability could afford a cruise. And I agree Mum, it could've been thought out with people with kids in mind. Maybe this is just one of those cruises that is one step away from an orgy.
I know that last comment might have seemed harsh but to me that is what it seems like and whoever responded to Mum, I forget who, could've been more polite. The response sounded a bit catty. >:(
I have a couple of things to say regarding this post: One, there are avenues to get on the cruise, no matter your income. It's probably too late for this year, but just inquire with plenty of notice for next year. Also, there was nothing inappropriate for children last year in the common areas. Finally, I suggest you try http://www.rfamilyvacations.com/ for completely child-inclusive cruises for gays and lesbians - like ALL cruises, Rosie's cost money, too.
I think you should go on the cruise, then judge later based on your experience.

A month and a half to wait... Very exciting!!!
Dates are approaching very fast.
Unforetunately though Grand Turk's pier and shopping complex got destroyed by Hurricane Ike. :(

I think the ship is shared with a heterosexual positive group.

Wish I could be there. Have fun!

Yes. This is the other half of the cruise group. Last year we were one big group but this way specific group activities can be created for the 'straight' and the 'gay' groups. There are also going to be combined events as well so we'll be one big happy family on the ship !
33 days and counting ..

11 Days! So excited I could pee ;D

Hi all, been off site for a while. I too have been counting down, and can't wait to get out of NYC. As mentioned, I'm part of the SIN-NYC group. I know there will be fellow SINNERS from Philly, DC, and SF. Someone mentioned an AIDS-MEDS gathering...has that been planned? Would like to finally meet some of you...last time was a mini group in the city on a cold sunday in January. I think if one or 2 approach Paul at the pre-party or onboard hospitality table, he could arrange a place to meet. Just a suggestion, and I will drop that in his ear. For now, take care, and Bon Voyage

I arrived at the lovely Schubert Resort in Ft. Lauderdale about an hour ago and look forward to meeting folks in advance of tomorrow's cruise...It is a return to summer for me as it is about 80 and sunny and feels warmer than that with the Florida humidity....We are supposed to have a get together around 4 PM or so. After a rough few weeks at work, we are short handed for a change, I look forward to some R & R and time away from the hustle and bustle. New York is a great place to live in so many ways but getting away from it all is important as well.
If I don't post from the cruise I will see you all when I return...Take care and be well.
Jody :)
