Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Anyone who needs to post more than three messages in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum -- including past, present and future POZ Forums members -- will need to subscribe, with secure payments made via PayPal.

Read everything still worried

Hello,

My name is Stan, I'm a 24 year old gay man. About 2 months ago I had unprotected insertive anal sex with a guy I don't know very well. It was only on encounter, and yes, it was very stupid but I've had a long time to think about it and I'm not going to bore you with the "I'm a changed person" rant, because I already know I am. At any rate I am extremely paranoid that I have HIV, of course because of google and me self diagnosing myself. About a month ago I had a cold, runny nose and sneezing. However I didn't have a headache, sore muscles, or basically any of the so called "symptoms" of initial HIV infection. except one, after the cold a lymph node on my neck below my jaw has remain ever so slightly swollen and firm to the touch (no pain). Of course, being human and having full access to more information that I should have I'm convinced when I go to get tested it will be positive. The guy i was with assures me he test negative prior to our encounter and about a month after the encounter (but of course paronoid me doesn't believe it even though i have no reason not to). Needless to say, I'm scared. My question is does my swollen lymph node(which yes, i constantly touch and poke to see if it is still there) a sign that I am HIV+? Are my odds of becoming infected low? Am I worrying for no reason?

I just read a Thread previous to mine (Worried Sick), basically the same concept. I'll heed your advice on there, Thanks Ann!

You're welcome and yes, the advice I gave to Sportsfan is very relevant to your own situation.

As it's been two months, you can test now for a good indication of your hiv status. If it is negative, you need to confirm at three months, but as long as it's been six weeks or more, a negative result would be highly unlikely to change when you confirm.

I also hope you took on board my advice to never go by what someone tells you about their hiv status. Some people only think they accurately know their hiv status and some people, unfortunately, will lie. Assume any sexual partner is hiv positive, use condoms for intercourse, and you will be just fine where hiv is concerned.

While you're at it, do not forget to test for all the other, more easily transmitted STIs. Some infections like syphilis and gonorrhea are on the rise in the gay community and they don't always have noticeable symptoms.

As a sexually active adult, you should be having a complete sexual health care check up at least once a year. It's what responsible people do.
