Mental Health Counseling in NYC
« on: January 26, 2009, 10:53:34 pm »
I am wondering if anyone has recommendations for mental health professionals/counseling in New York City?

I was diagnosed positive in November and have been dealing with things on the physical/medicine side since then.  I am  also going to a couple of support groups for newly diagnosed men which has been really good.  However, I would like to get some one on one counseling.  I think one of the reasons I let myself get infected is because I wasn't treating myself well, wasn't caring for myself, wasn't respecting myself.  I would like to talk this out and try to figure this out with someone.

Any thoughts? Recommendations? Resources?

Thanks,
Earl in NYC

Earl, I've never been to NYC, so I can't help you with finding a therapist. I just wanted to welcome you to the forum.  I imagine someone else with more info will chime in, eventually.  I also wonder if you googled it if that would help?

Earl -- make sure to sign-up as a client at GMHC (gmhc.org).  During this process, you can ask them this question, and they should be able to direct you to some one-on-one counseling.

And welcome to our forums!

Peter had a good suggestion.  Do you have medical insurance.  I know that a lot of sites have mental health sections where you can find doctors who suit your needs (depression, gay issues, self esteem, etc.)   That is how I found my therapist.  I know United Health Care has it, as does Aetna and Blue Cross/Blue shield.  Or you might want to ask your GP/ ID doctor for some recommendations.

Welcome to the board...You would find a lot answers on here
