In 1980, the salary of a U.S. senator was $60,662. Today, it is $174,000. If members of Congress had increased the federal minimum wage at the same rate they gave themselves raises, our lowest-paid workers would be making $9.58 per hour today.

Instead, they're still at $7.25.

===========================

Chants and shouts giving way to curses and confrontations. Activists protesting poverty-level wages are blocking an access road to a Temple Terrace shopping center.

Standing a few feet clear of the ruckus, a minimum-wage worker named Anthony Moore holds a protest sign aloft. Not in defiance, but to block the sun from 2-year-old daughter Taytay, who is trying to nap on his shoulder.

Over there, on the other side of the nation, the mood was lighter.

Billionaires had gathered a week earlier at a swanky resort in California where Koch Industries had invited U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to speak.

The Senate minority leader boasted of living in "the most free and open system'' in modern times because the Supreme Court has allowed corporations to pump hundreds of millions in campaign funds into the political process.

If Republicans gain control, McConnell suggested, the Senate can stop "debating all these gosh darn proposals … like raising the minimum wage.''

Perhaps a little context would help.

In 1980, the salary of a U.S. senator was $60,662. Today, it is $174,000. If members of Congress had increased the federal minimum wage at the same rate they gave themselves raises, our lowest-paid workers would be making $9.58 per hour today.

The minimum wage debate is not a simple one. Neither side has a monopoly on the facts.

Supporters of raising the minimum wage could cite studies from California-Berkeley and MIT that suggest higher pay means a healthier economy. Critics could produce their own studies that warn a higher minimum wage could result in a smaller workforce.

Meanwhile, a generation of workers tries to decide whether it's better to skip the electric or water bill this month.

Moore, 27, has been working at a Burger King in Hillsborough County for nearly a year. He took classes to get necessary food service certifications and was promoted to a shift manager two months ago. He gets up at 4 a.m. six days a week to catch a 4:30 a.m. bus in his slacks and tie so he can reach Burger King by 5:15 to begin setting up for the day.

His hourly pay?

It is Florida's minimum wage of $7.93 an hour, he said, the same pay he was getting when he was hired.

"It's almost as if the big bosses don't care,'' Moore said. "Last week, my water was cut off. I tell them, 'I'm not asking for days off, I'm not asking to be rich, all I'm asking for is fair pay for the hard work I'm doing. Y'all go home in your luxurious cars, and you have your nice houses, and I'm taking the bus home to my apartment in the 'hood.

"People look at us out here protesting, and they're like, 'You should have stayed in school and gotten a better job.' It doesn't always work that way.''

The "Fight for 15'' protest that Moore joined on Thursday was part of a national movement aimed at getting the minimum wage raised to $15 an hour.

More than 100 fast food workers, health service employees, union organizers and assorted hangers-on joined the mid-day Tampa protest that lasted about 90 minutes and stretched from a McDonald's on 56th street to a Burger King on Fowler Avenue.

While the chances of a federal $15 minimum wage are remote, at best, there are indications that a gradual increase might have some momentum.

Seattle recently approved a $15 minimum wage to be phased in over seven years, and the sky did not fall. An upcoming ballot measure in San Francisco could raise the minimum wage to $12 next year and $15 by 2018.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 10 states raised minimum wages in 2014 and another 28 states had bills introduced

For someone such as Nesi Nix, change can't come soon enough.

A single mother of three who works at a Taco Bell in Tampa, Nix, 25, points out that a higher wage would enable someone in her shoes to get off food stamps and save money for taxpayers.

"I'm doing whatever it takes to make a home for my kids, but it's a constant struggle,'' Nix said. "My (6-year-old) son sees what the other kids in school have. It hurts that I can't do the same things for him at Christmas or his birthday. It hurts like crazy.

"That's the thing I struggle with every day. He gets good grades, and I want to reward him somehow. I want to show him, 'Mommy sees you, and she's proud of you.' I don't want him to give up and just be the typical … kid you see on the street. I want him to have a successful life.''

Well I don't know how so perhaps its lollipop rainbows to wish it but it seems to me that

1) Senators should be making more than that, more like 300 to 400,000 a year perhaps, and they should be actually working more, too!!   And passing legislation.

(Everyday professors at good schools are making 100-200,000 a year.  Corporate lawyers start at just about that senator's salary!  Start!)  A senator is a pretty prestigious and important job!  Nationally important.

And 2) the minimum wage should be a living wage, whatever that is. Obviously in 2014 minimum wage jobs are not just for young people and/or little part time jobs. Plenty of people are trying to live on such jobs and cannot manage.

Also its politically impossible but the US president should have a salary comparable to university presidents, middling corporate execs, big foundation heads, etc.  I mean at least 500K but more like a million a year.

A senator only makes $174k a year.  No wonder they are in bed with every lobbyist out there.

Speaking of the minimum wage.  Just yesterday on my commute to work I got caught in a protest about the minimum wage.  Protesters had stopped traffic and I got caught for about a half hour.  AND...I live in Seattle.  We already passed a $15 an hour minimum wage......so...what is the rest of the country doing to raise their minimum wage?

http://www.kpbs.org/news/2014/aug/18/san-diego-council-vote-minimum-wage-veto/

My family run a small business with 12 employees.
In San Diego min wage is $9 hr. We've always started employees @ $10 + set 20% gratuities, no health benefits but very flexible with their schedules.

Some of them net $1200-1500 every two weeks.
Some of them already have full time jobs and work for us part-time.

Their gratuities alone average $12+ hr.

The majority protesting seem to be employees of mulit-national companies and if a blanket increase goes into effect there doesn't seem to be any consideration on those receiving gratuities in addition to minimum wage. e.g. wait staff, chauffeurs etc.

Louisville govt is debating raising it to $10.10.  They will exempt businesses with less than 12 employees-- or something like that.  A recent poll of all of Kentucky showed a majority supported raising it.  But, it is clear many are against it.  If you read news comment sections, you see such awful comments-- minimum wage workers are lazy, stupid, etc.  Many say minimum wage wasn't meant to be a living wage, with many still believing they are teen jobs.  The average age is 29.  But, I see many who are bitter, that they have some college and make $12-$15.  They feel it would be unfair for someone working at McDonald's to make what they make.

I saw stats, which said it 1968, the minimum wage was equivalent to over $10 an hour.  In 1980, it was equivalent to over $8 an hour-- adjusted for inflation.  You don't have to be a math whiz to see $7.25 doesn't have the same buying power today, when most everything has gone up way beyond inflation.

I like what Bill Maher said-- This is the question the right has to answer:  Either you are for smaller government and less handouts or you're for keeping the minimum wage low.  Because, you cannot have it both ways.  I, for one, am getting tired of helping fully profitable companies pay their workers.

I spent $7 on a gallon of milk tonight...how is someone making $7 an hour supposed to make it?

$7 for milk. Cray cray !!

When I was 8 or 9, I had jaundice and associated it to butter ( I Ireland real butter is yellow), since then I've never eaten butter and when I realised butter is made from milk I never had or bought either.

That's crazy pricing !  I know it's been going up, but we haven't seen it that high here!     We get our milk now at CVS or Walgreens.  They usually run weekly specials. We can get it for about 3.39 a gallon.

Sorry for the milk hijack.  Ya $7. It was organic though..I don't like lady hormones in my milk so I usually buy organic milk.

Even so, this totally aggravates me we are subsidising all these companies that don't want to pay their employees with food stamps and healthcare just so they can get buy. It's asinine.

It infuriates me that people think its OK for hugely profitable company's to pay less than a living wage and people are not only OK with that they blame the people that work 40 hours a week for them and call them slackers because they haven't made a better life .

We may not be able to legislate the Wall-marts and mega chain fast food businesses from forcing mom and pop businesses out of community's but we damn sure can legislate that they will pay fairly, if not then most people are pretty much enslaved and working for the company store .

Just read an article that listed the top ten companies to work for if you do not have a college degree.  They described these companies as offering the most opportunity.

1. Costco
2.  Whole Foods
3.  Chipotle
4. Publix
5.  Nordstrom
6.  Wells Fargo
7.  Apple
8.  Starbucks
9.  Lowe's
10.  Home Depot

Chipotle?? That one struck me as odd but ok.  And home depot, has anyone been in a home depot lately, talk about horrible service.

Here in Greensboro there is a big difference in customer service between Costco and Sam's Club and I think it is directly related to wage. The employees at Costco  make an average of $21 an hour and their employee turnover rate of only 6% while Sam's club pays an average of $11.23. The employees at Costco are quick, helpful and obviously work as a team. The employees at Sam's Club don't make eye contact, the answer to "do you have x" is just "I don't know" and they seem unconcerned with... well, anything.

No. Sam's Club will have a some products that are slightly less expensive but most things that I buy are within pennies of being the same price. Milk, bread, dog food, office products are all essentially the same price. A large rotisserie cooked chicken is $4.98 at both places. One difference is Costco tends to have higher quality items at higher prices and in limited quantity. For example, Costco will have a leather sofa for say $699 that is good quality and Sam's Club will have a different, lower quality sofa for $599.

Check out this comparison: http://www.cheapism.com/costco-vs-sams-price-comparison

So why don't people shop at a place that offers a living wage to workers who are pleasant and helpful?
Most people know someone working in crappy conditions, and the last few years its very much in the public debate, so its not ignorance...

i shop at the crappy places (ie Walmart and Sams) because over a dozen friends work there, so I am at least supporting the pitiful check they do receive. (with 3 workers available for every job opening, it's not like these people can just "get another job" somewhere else) I shop at the crappy places, because when you live in the rural South (or in the center of a busy metro areas) food deserts abound because there simply aren't other stores nearby. I shop at the crappy stores because poverty severely limits my transportation choices of even getting to any store. I shop at the crappy places because I'm incredibly poor and I get more bang for my buck at those stores. (although I do shop at Publix because of all their BOGO items :) )

I am aware of many of these reasons. Thanks for explaining and Im sorry if I sounded callous...
i was really wondering why when people have the choice, it doesn't factor....
I think it will, more and more.  Like all cultural shifts. Slowly but surely.

i was really wondering why when people have the choice, it doesn't factor....
I think it will, more and more.  Like all cultural shifts. Slowly but surely.
I think the cultural shift that has already happening has already made too many middle-class americans into lower class americans....so even more americans spend their vote/dollars at these "crappy stores" than ever before. that's no incentive for big business to change their practices - not when they are "winning". until america goes back to a democracy from an oligarchy, I don't think that cultural shift you mentioned, that we would both like to see, is likely to happen.

Yes good points.
And by the way, I didn't say "crappy stores" I said "crappy conditions" referring to the low wages and stingy if any insurance benefits, shitty schedules, hostility to unions, etc.

I was worried you are being sarcastic or putting words in my mouth.
If you think WalMart is full of crap, or crappy, be my guest.
As recounted in other threads dating back a few years, my middle-class dad made a big point of avoiding businesses with lousy labour conditions and generally fucked up business models, and made a point of teaching this out but yeah he could afford to factor this into his choices....

Also he was a generous tipper.
I think because he thought workers deserved more, having gone from dirt poor childhood to middle class.
I know about the downward mobility but still I think because of that, there will be more people trying to do their small bit to put their politics into their purchasing... Hope so.

I know where I live at there has been new business come to town like the Nissan Plant. It has brought many people from different states to work here now. With that being said the cost of living has gone up tremendously. We also have allot of new homes and other business that are being built that support the Nissan Plant which means more jobs in this particular area. I mean while the cost of living and prices are continuously going up minimum wage should as well.

I don't understand this  :-\

It keeps what we call the middle class now pay check to pay check.

Minimum wage in the UK is equivalent to approx  10.35 USD.My wages haven't changed in 4 years. We used to get increments twice a year in my job.We are above minimum wage ,however our promised rise last November after all thatvtime never materialised!!!!!

I am so upset  that people are having to work for under 8 USD in the US....how can it be possible to pay health care let alone the cost of living?

Granted, I am living in a somewhat rural area where there aren't many other jobs to have, but I am working for crap wages - not minimum, but not too much above it either.

With the economy being what it is, I have started looking at how "livable" my wages are.  An hour's labor for me get me enough gas to get there and back each day, or it can get me a pack of bacon.

An hour's work for one pack of bacon.

I guess we're fortunate that Ohio's economy has always been pretty good.  I'm not even sure what our minimum wage is because no company can afford to pay that.  In our local area, we have more jobs than people to fill them.

McDonalds recently had a huge sign up that read they were hiring at over $10.00 per hour.  Every business you enter has help wanted signs posted.  And our cost of living is quite reasonable.

Being honest is not wronging others, continuing the dishonesty is.
