Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Hi! I've been scanning the internet for information a few days now mainly because I am so scared! On Friday night, I had sex with a man I have been seeing for a few weeks. We used a condom, but when we finished having sex the condom wasnt on him, it was rolled up inside of me and he had come inside me. I do not know how long we were having unprotected sex for. We also had oral sex and I noticed the day after I had a mouth ulcer, I dont know how long I had this for. The reason why I am worried is because he is from Malawi, an area that has a very high rate of HIV and an AIDS epidemic, I am not aware of whether this man has HIV or whether he knows himself if he did happen to have it. I'm worried incase he has got it. I plan to get tested but I have read that it is too soon for a test to detect HIV, it has not even been a week.

I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help me and give me some advice

Simmy,

You've had unprotected sex and that does pose a risk in terms of HIV transmission so you do need to test. HIV is a fragile virus which is not easy to transmit so the chances of you being infected from this encounter are low, even if the fellow you had sex with was HIV positive.

Nevertheles, low risk is not the same as no risk so as I said you do need to test. Not only that but it might be wise to ask for a full STD screen to check for other STD's like syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. A full STD screen will include an HIV antibody test. The window period for HIV testing is 13 weeks.

Given this was a single incident and that your partner was wearing a condom for at least a part of the time, I'd say the odds are significantly in your favor that you will test negative.

But as Matty has said, low risk is not the same as no risk. Get tested at 13 weeks and collect what is hopefully going to be a negative result.

In the meantime stay productively busy and the waiting time will pass more quickly than you may imagine is possible.

As for your mouth ulcer, that is absolutely not an HIV specific symptom and should not be misinterpreted as such.

Thank you for your replies, it has put my mind at ease a little, I was thinking that I may have been at a high risk. I intend to see a doctor and to get tested.
