If It's Not One Thing, It's Another - Knee Problems
« on: June 21, 2013, 09:47:15 am »
So, last Friday I began having problems out of nowhere with my right knee... Extremely painful....

Dealt with it until Monday than went to Urgent Care where they did an x-ray and said it appeared to be tendonitis....

Went to work Wednesday (after icing and resting it Tuesday)... only to have it get worse by end of day Wednesday.....

Thursday took off work due to knee and Urgent Care Center called to say that they had gotten x-rays read and there is an abnormality in x-ray ---- calling for me to see an orthopedic surgeon ASAP....

So, I have an 11:15 appointment today w/ ortho to get an MRI done and see what is going on.... Knee is hurting and radiating upwards from it....  Icing, ibuprofen are only providing temporary relief...

Needless to say, having been sleeping well as the dayuummm thing hurts no matter what position I try to put it in at night.

Hoping to get some answers and relief starting today.  UGGGHHHH....

Strange thing is, I haven't injured it in anyway....
Could just be age catching up with me..... Need to check my warranty and see how long knees are covered under it.

Thanks all...

Saw the ortho surgeon.... They did more x-rays, but no MRI yet (insurance company requires that I have other treatment prior to authorizing MRI). Doc thinks the abnormality on the x-ray is benign, but will investigate further (i.e. MRI) if this treatment approach prescribed today doesn't work...

He gave me a cortisone shot in the knee (yep, felt real good - NOT - although it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would).... He also prescribed a muscle relaxer and another script used to treat arthritis and osteoporosis.... And, I begin physical therapy next Friday..

See the doc again in 4 weeks - if it is better - cool
If not, we do the MRI
If it worsens, I go back sooner and we do MRI

In the meantime, no beach volleyball, dancing, and some very slow walking for me.

Jeff - Can you speak to the powers that be and have a sub-topic area added under "Off Topic" titled "Medical Calamities are Us?"

Trying to keep a positive attitude, but seems like I keep taking a step forward and two back (at least over the past few months).

Oh, and I raised my flex spending account a bit this year after exhausting it 4 months into last year - and guess what? I have exhausted the higher amount 6 months into the year... So, next year, I shall raise it again. Geesh.

Phil, I'm so sorry you're going through this.  As I'm sure you know, I'm the queen of knee issues.  Having avascular necrosis and osteoarthritis in both knees, I can certainly sympathize.  Last time I was at the doctor (just a few weeks ago), I was told my knees are basically just bones grinding together.

Cortisone injections have become my friends-I'm sure you'll find this out.  I would, anyway, keep in mind that more and more people are having issues with avascular necrosis, but most seem to get this in the hips.  However, it is worth keeping in mind should you continue to have problems.  I would suggest this to the doctor if your pain doesn't ease up.  I'm not saying that's what it is for sure, but something to remember.  One of my clients had this in one of his hips, plus a knee, and now the other knee.

I do hope it feels some better.  I don't do any exercise that involves running or jumping.  I do have a recumbent bike I ride 5 days a week, at the ortho's suggestion.  They're fairly cheap, if you want to exercise but can't do the typical aerobic stuff.
I've never killed anyone, but I frequently get satisfaction reading the obituary notices.-Clarence Darrow

Thanks for the information Betty - I will definitely check it out with the doc.... Still a bit sore this morning, but the cortisone seems to be providing some relief (although some have told me that it will sometimes make it hurt a bit more before it feels better). Oh and the other script he gave me isn't for osteoporosis (as I previously posted) it is for osteoarthritis....

History of rheumatoid arthritis (pretty severe) in the family - but I thought (and still hope) that I dodged that bullet.... as my dad's onset of severe RA was when he was 38 and I'm 46.... His dad's (my grandfather) had it hit him at age 37....

Just have to see where this ride called life takes us at times.

I hope that Cortisone shot works some relief in soon Phil.  I have knee problems as well and can attest to the power of the shot in the knee.  I was scared shitless the first time a doctor told me what he was going to do with that large needle.  But, surprisingly after some kind of freeze spray they put on my knee, I didn't feel a thing.

To Phil & BT 65 : Have you considered  Plasma Rich Platelet Therapy or "Orthokin" ( Google it ) therapy for the ongoing arthritis ? By my humble opinion highest numbers of CD3 cells are also linked to a prolonged inflammation processes in the body , and most of us here , especially "oldies" have high CD3 count , and reversed CD3/CD4 and CD3/CD8 ratio.I have also heard that cinnamon , turmeric , and the peppers help a lot along with omega 3 oil. There is also strange receipt with golden raisins and gin on the net - so why not try it.

Not good Phil and another as far as I can see stupid insurance decision as surly the most accurate diagnosis is needed as soon as pos so the correct treatment is given.

Anyways I hope the investigations are good for you and the present treatment works.

Good luck with it all

Michael.
