Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

need advice on p24 test

Dear all,

I had unprotected oral sex( both giving and receiving) 1 month ago. I know the risk of oral sex is small, but some unexpected symptoms( rash, painful joint, and very hairy white tongue!!!). As I have bad oral condition and my hairy white tongue is very similar to oral thrush and hairy Leukoplakia, I am so scared. I did P24 antigen+anti body combination test 17 days and 28 days after the risk, and the results are negative.

Could you explain me how reliable the results are? thanks

If you would have had a risk a P24 test is not a standalone test and has to be followed up with an antibody test.

The test I did is always p24 antigen test plus anti body test, or more precise, two tests at the same time.

A duo test is not conclusive had you had a risk in that time span.

Another question is how fast can an infected person have sympom of oral thrush and hairy Leukoplakia？ Mine appreared 10 days after the risk and drove me crazy.thank you for your reply

Thrush is not specific to HIV and it can happen to anyone at anytime.

Not only are those symptoms not in anyway HIV specific, in general symptoms are never the way to know anything reliably about your HIV status. Anytime there has been a real risk, and I don't consider your incident to have been such, the only way to reliably know your HIV status is by getting tested at 13 weeks.

In your case I don't consider testing to be necessary unless you are going to make yourself crazy about the issue. In which case, get tested at 13 weeks and collect the inevitable negative result.

Hi everyone, I am very comfused about my situation. ??? Could anyone, Ann, Andy... shed a light on that?

In the last 6 weeks after risk, I almost got all the symptoms of primary HIV infection: rash, fever,joint pain, swollen glands, sore throat and neck, night sweats and very white hairy tongue(appeared at 10 days after exposure). Most of the symptoms such as joint pain, night sweats and white hairy tongue have never happened to me.

As the symptoms appeared so soon after the risk, I thought I should already have lots viruses in my body and be tested positive very soon. But so far the 2, 4 and 6 weeks duo test( p24 and antibody) turn out to be negative.

My question : I know P24 test is very specific but not sensitive to viruses, but can 3 tests of P24 provide kind of assurance?  If a person has so many symptoms in early days, is the likelihood to be tested positive very high in that period?

You were advised the timeline for a P-24 test was from 1 to 3-4 weeks post exposure. The P24 is not a stand alone test the window period for antibody test is 3 months post exposure.

Rapidrod, thank you for the quick reply. Do you know how often OHL happen in acute infection stage? I have very obvious white hairy tongue(the hairs can not be scraped off) after 10 days, is this normal?

You continue to persist in focusing on symptoms even though you have been told 1) symptoms will never tell you anything accurately about your HIV status and 2) there is nothing in anyway HIV-specific about yours.

Your risk was more theoretical than actual. Cut it out with all this drama and scurrying around searching for nuggets of hope while misdiagnosing yourself. Go ahead and get tested at 13 weeks after the incident if you must for peace of mind. Based on what you reported of the incident your getting a negative result is a slam dunk.

As far as your symptoms are concerned that's something you should be discussing with your doctor.

No matter how you work a show over it, this is NOT an HIV situation.
