Safe testosterone levels??
« on: May 05, 2009, 09:01:42 pm »
Good evening all:

I'm trying to find out more information about what is considered a safe testosterone level.

I'm 52yo. Been positive for over 25 years. I go to the gym religiously. It gives me a sense of control. Back in the late 90's I was prescribed testosterone and Oxandrin. My body was transformed. It feels great. My level in March was 37.5.

Anyone know if that is ridiculously high? Is this a reasonable level? Or where could I do the research to find out on my own?

As always thanks.
LES Jake

LES -- your lab test should show a reference range, and indicate if your results are outside that range.  Call your doctor's office and ask them to give you this.

Also, there are various types of testosterone tests (serum testosterone, free testosterone, etc.), and I'm not sure which one your doctor used.

I did a quick check on one of my favorite lab test websites (http://www.labtestsonline.org/), and here's what it said about very high testosterone readings:

Quote
Increased testosterone levels in males can indicate:

    * testicular tumors
    * adrenal tumors that are producing testosterone
    * use of androgens (also called anabolic steroids)
    * early puberty of unknown cause in boys
    * hyperthyroidism
    * congenital adrenal hyperplasia

Again, I have no idea if your levels are above the reference range for your age, sex, and method used in that laboratory (all 3 of these determine the reference range).

Regardless, this is worth talking to your doctor about first.

Thanks Peter so much for the info. Let me check that web site you referred to see if I can get to the bottom of this.

Also here's the range for my age group:

 men    (40-59 yrs)                    7.2 - 23.0

My result was 37.5. I'm going to do less deca and see if I can get it down to a more reasonable number.

I don't want to put my body as risk especially given I've been poz for such a long time.

Thx
LESJ
