One More Question
« on: July 12, 2010, 05:05:06 pm »
As most of you know, I frequently ask questions on this forum for my son who is HIV+ and on Atripla.  I have one more question.  He has been on Atripla for five weeks with excellent results.  There is one side effect that he is having that is causing him trouble.  He likes to go out drinking and socializing, and has noticed that when he drinks he has bad diarrhea the following day.

Is this something that may go away after he is on the medication longer, or is it something he is going to have to deal with forever.  He and I both know that alcohol in moderation is best, whether HIV+ or not, but I hope he won't have to quit drinking altogether.

Thanks again in advance for your thoughts.

The booze has a similar effect on me, in addition to making me especially witty and charming. Particularly large quantities of beer. The more I've consumed the worse the screaming shits.

So moderation is the key, I suppose. Maybe supplemental fibre like psyllium husk will help.

I love my Coronas and I'm also on Atripla -- I get some runs from it the day after drinking - but, more often I get stomach cramps - but, then again, I get those when I don't drink the beer.  (I stopped drinking the hard liquor about a year ago because of my GERD).

Maybe because I have went opposite of moderation, my body and the Atripla have learned to co-exist with the Corona - as have my bowels   ;D

Maybe he can take anti diarrhea medicine to control this.

Mixing booze and loperamide is not a good idea. Perhaps there are other medications which don't have this problem.

Ah.  Then maybe more in the line of Miss P's suggestion:  how about smoking a joint and drinking less? And if he doesn't want to smoke it, he can eat it.

Really?  What happens?

edit: a quick google says "Use alcohol with caution because loperamide may increase the intoxicating action of alcohol." emphasis on "may" there.  As is widely known by many, I've taken masses of loperamide daily for the past 13 years, and while I'm not a heavy drinker I am known to tie one on from time to time and I've never had a problem, nor is it cautioned by the pharmacy with proper labeling, nor have I been at any time cautioned verbally for this by the span of four HIV specialists that have prescribed this for me during that same 13 year period.  I'm going to have to call BS on this one, Matilda.

You are both a notorious lush and a drug fucked pill queen. You could consume twice your body weight in vicodin washed down with several litres of Everclear whilst sucking the active ingredient out a deodorant stick and still troll your way through Living With on that clapped out Macintosh you use to torrent Brazillian tit porn without missing a beat.

However, for folks who don't have the chemical constitution of Liza Minellii reborn as a Terminator mixing lopermide and booze is not a good idea. That's why they put the warnings on the box.

Oh my goodnesss, I feel the love!  LOL  You guys crack me up.  I would love to spend one evening with you guys, too bad we are spread all over the country.

I hadn't thought about trying immodium.  I think it's worth a try.  Maybe if it increases the intoxicating effect, my son wouldn't drink as much (yeah, probably wishful thinking on my part).

My son's birthday was yesterday and he went out for "happy hour martinis" and was throwing up by 10:00.  Not sure how many of those martinis he had, but he usually doesn't get sick from alcohol.  I'm thinking that for most people, alcohol and HAART do not go well together.  Maybe because the HAART makes your body more acidic and the booze dehydrates you.  I know my son has problems with very acidic poop when he is doesn't stay hydrated.

Thanks for the replies (and the laughs).

Actually, we're spread out all over the world. For example, Mecch is in Switzerland and Matty is in Australia. I live on a Rock in the middle of the Irish Sea - although I'm originally from the States.

It seems to me that most people really don't have a problem with HAART and alcohol, although yes, some do. Jan (aka Anniebc, who is in New Zealand) is one, I believe. Of the six people I know locally who are on HAART, only one of them has a slight problem if she drinks too much or drinks without a good meal inside her first (never had a problem pre-HAART). I know the other five have no problem as I see them in the pub regularly. Four of them drink quite a bit. No problems.

It might just be that he is still in an adjustment period and this is something that will abate in time.

Thanks Ann for the info and encouragement.  I hope that a little more time on the Atripla will make things a little better.  I don't drink at all, but I understand that my son enjoys doing so.  I have to put aside my thoughts of "if it makes you sick, then don't do it" and understand that it is something he enjoys doing.  I ride my own Harley, which some may consider quite dangerous, and I wouldn't want someone telling me I shouldn't do it.  Everyone has the right to live their lives the way they see fit, without being judged.

You have a wonderful website here and I have enjoyed it immensely.  I've laughed, cried, and rejoiced right along with the other members.  Sometimes I come here just for the entertainment (please don't take that the wrong way, I'm not saying HIV is entertaining, but the members certainly are).  I'm so thankful you have a place for people like me who are not HIV+ but love someone who is.

Hey Squaw, I used to ride many, many moons ago. Haven't been on a bike in nearly 30 years. I live on the Isle of Man, the home of the TT races. I discussed it a bit in this thread.

I feel like I should say "thank you" for your compliments about the site, but I can't really take any credit. I may be an admin here, but I'm really just a volunteer and had nothing to do with the site's creation. That credit goes to a guy named Peter Staley, who has since retired.
