Big brother is watching
« on: February 09, 2013, 07:12:47 pm »
I've noticed that a member recently warned now carries a green symbol with the word "watched" under their name. Kinda creepy and big brotherish if you ask me. Seems like the rap to the knuckles should suffice, without the need for a scarlet green letter.

I haven't noticed.  What is the purpose of that?  I mean the purpose for all members to see that?

It's a new tool we got when we upgraded a while ago. Up to now, it was mainly used in the Am I Infected forum, but we rarely need to use it over there now.

We've decided to start using it over here, as it can be set on a timer. Don't ask me to explain all the ins and outs - it's complicated. Suffice it to say that Matty's "warned badge" (for lack of a better term) will be disappearing shortly.

And yes, it's going to be used from now on when someone gets a warning. It also carries an optional function of muting someone for a short time - which can be handy for diffusing a gathering storm without resorting to a "full-blown" Time Out.

Don't want the "warned (or muted) badge" to appear under your name? Then don't call people names or do anything else that could result in a warning. We mainly ask that people are civil to one another. Is that so difficult?

Ann

PS - I do NOT foresee this being used very often, so everyone can stop clutching the pearls.

When pulling into our driveway tonight, we noticed something reflective on our post lamp.  I went to inspect.  It was two green, reflective stickers.  We have no idea who put them there.  It has me a tad freaked out.  I mean, I will sleep tonight, but still a little creepy.  We were wondering whether they are some message for thieves.  To let someone know there are two of us to gang rape.  There are actually three of us.  My friend lives with us.  So odd.  Are the police watching us?  We own our home, so nothing a landlord would do.  We installed the post, so we know they weren't there.

Here's the pic.  What would you think?  Btw, the plants were pansies.  Can you believe they made it until the end of January?  And, it had been very cold, freezing rain, and snow.  First time planting them.  If I had known, I would have planted more.  I thought they could just survive until Thanksgiving, at the most.  Ok, I digress.

Well, there was talk of green dots used here on the forums to warn members.  Perhaps there is a forum mafia.  There was a new Louisville member, who posted recently.

I woke up this morning and also had the newspaper thought.  We do get the paper.  And, we don't have a mailbox off the street.  Ours is connected to the house.  I did remember seeing those stickers on street side mailboxes.  We've gotten the paper forever and the lamp post has been there since last Spring.  I will have to ask the paper boy.  I'll invite him in.  It's ok.  He's of age.  He's a hot college guy making some extra cash.

I think we have put the sticker question to rest , just don't try to remove them , trust me you really don't want to go there .  ;) .

At first I thought, who even gets the paper anymore? But then saw that you do. ::) But is the paper business really that busy to have to put dots on posts and mailboxes to denote who gets one, or what type of paper they get? Here in SA one of the 2 papers shut down due to declining subscriptions. The other paper is talking about cutting back to only Sunday printing. But maybe it's different with the hillbillies in Kentucky. Also, when I was a paper boy I had a printed list with addresses to deliver the papers to, no dots, and I never missed a delivery.  So Im not so sure it's Paper related.

But either way inviting the paper boy in for a talk sounds perfect. Here's a preview of Ted talking to seducing the paper boy...

Not having a large subscription base is probably the problem. Gone are the days when not having a paper delivered was the exception rather than the rule. Those who opted out were easily remembered and if a paper was delivered the odd time to a non-subscriber, there weren't any angry phone calls.

With a lot of these things being delivered by car nowdays (lack of demand would make small routes unrewarding - bye-bye paper boy) it makes sense to have a marking system.

In my old neighborhood the glowing dots mystery would have been solved quickly and simply by asking one of the Snoop Sisters (Ms. Mattie or Ms. Hattie) if they didn't tell you first.

Isn't that for when you want to know what happened yesterday?

I get the weekend delivery.  Mostly for the ads that come on Sunday, but also because I hate thinking of the decline of the "actual" newspaper.

I get Le Temps, the daily broadsheet in Geneva, to my office, along with WSJ Europe. School pays.

I paid the subscription plan for the online NYTimes, way back the first time they did it. Also at the time, WSJ.  Then NYT online was free again. Now its been fee-based again for what, 2 years? I haven't subscribed yet.

I paid for the Guardian online for about a year.

That's exactly how it would look.  Well, no walker yet.  I do have popsicles.  The Family Guy fans will get that.

Our roommate got the subscription, or I wouldn't pay for it.  It is a little odd that they feel they can place stickers on your property, but no big deal in the large scheme of things.  When the flowers grow up this spring, you won't be able to see them.  I guess they will be helpful to see which house is ours, if the lights burn out in the post light.

Seriously, I had to respond to this one before dinner....

Ha, ha, ha....first you have to have a pole, and then you need something measurable....the mile you might have nailed down, or someone else has, you probably have a door but being in Texas, who knows!

You so always set yourself up for good times on other people's parts!
