CoH to start new trial

Back in 2010 the City of Hope completed a trial of a new gene therapy to treat HIV. Based on the outcome of that trial the team has been work to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. A new trial is about to start at CoH in December.

This pilot clinical trial studies busulfan and gene therapy after frontline chemotherapy in treating patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as busulfan, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Placing the gene for anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) into progenitor cells may make the body build an immune response to AIDS. Giving busulfan before gene therapy may help gene therapy work better.
