Title: For cat lovers!
Post by: britchick on October 25, 2013, 12:45:41 pm
Im going to sound slightly crazy...but im in pieces.
There was a beautiful cat who lived across the road. His owners didn't bother with him and as Im totally cat crazy we kind of adopted him.He had been run over by a car long before we knew him, had the battle scars to prove it.He didn't like other people, animals or anything!!!

I spent hrs socialising him, it was sooooo rewarding.I also believe that he helped me to get back on my feet after being hospitalised with aids. His "owner" abandoned him and moved away months ago I feel like he's part of the family and sleeps up in my room we spoil him .......now the owner feels guilty and wants to collect him tomorrow. She never let him in the house, or cuddled him ..he's not mine.....but im sooooooooo angry.

Sorry because I know its really silly..but  i have cried non stop for 24 hrs!!!!!!!!!

To cap it all, she's going away training for another 3 months.....so the poor wee thing will be dumped outside all the time.GRRRRRRRRRR......Thanks for letting me vent!

Im working tomorrow, so will not see him going away. This is far worse than splitting up with my other half!!!!!!!!!

Tell them they cant have the cat back and if they come near you or the cat you will call the police .

I'm with Jeff on this one.  They abandoned the cat when they moved away and did not take him with them.  He is YOUR cat now and they have no claim on him, so don't give him to them.  You took him in, when they would not and possession is 9/10ths of the law, especially "abandoned" property.

Stay Strong,

BTW, it is never silly to lament losing something that we love.

Joe

edited to add:  You can make a claim that they truly abandoned him, because they have not provided anything for his upkeep, since moving away.  It's not like they asked you to care for him, until they could come get him.  They ABANDONED him and you adopted him... case closed.

If Im not mistaken the UK has pretty strict anti cruelty laws for animals and it seems those laws would be on your side ?

Good point, but for me it comes down to the welfare of the cat.  He has adopted you as much as you adopted him.  I would tell them if they want the cat... sue me for him and explain to the court why a cat you abandoned is somehow yours.

do not let them take that cat.  You have loved and nurtured this animal, they ignored and abandoned it.
When they come to collect -- say he ran away and close the door.

Present them with with an itemized bill for all the food, vet care, etc. you have provided the cat. Tell them before they take the cat, you will expect compensation.

If they can't cough up the dough, you will hold the cat until they can.

I expect them to retreat so fast they leave skid marks.  :P

DO NOT LET THEM TAKE THE CAT. Period.

Tell them to sue you, They will have to pay court fees to file, which I doubt they will. Even if they do, any judge would rule in your favor given the circumstances.

-Will

Edited to add: any American judge would rule in your favor...I just realized you are in UK but certainly the laws are similiar on abandonment. etc...

If they leave the cat outside maybe kitty will jump into your car if the door is open. ;)

I really hope you are able to retrieve the kitty.  That "owner" should not have possession of the poor thing, he's yours.  I would try whatever I could do to get him back.  But, that's me.  I have my fingers crossed for you, though.

hiya brit, sorry to hear that!

I am a cat lover too. One of my cats died some weeks ago, after 18 years of sweet company and friendship. His song, 15 years old, is still here with me. They have made my life easier, since I live alone.

What you can do is watching and the next time they leave the cat abandoned, talk to a animal protection group, explain them the situation and postulate for adopting the animal. They will intervene, checking what is happening and acting "officially" according to animal protection laws in the UK.

Pets are identified with a chip including owner data, and owner is responsible for the pet, if the abandoning is proved as certain, then the cat could be legally adopted by another person.

Hugs!  8)

Truly sorry Brit, I am late to the thread coz its dogs for me and I was expecting something differant to your thread.

More than willing to help out in a cat napping situation though off course a resolution that keeps us all out off authorities eyes is the best.

And as Joe said it is never silly to  lament the passing off those we love.

Where do you live BTW, I am in Clapham , London and Orkney,

Take care
Michael

The study must have been done by folks who never had a cat.  They can be just as affectionate as dogs and any "real" cat lover already knows this fact.

Well, my cat that passed away was a female and she was very independent and, it is true, she didn't like at all to be petted. She decided when she wanted to approach me or to be approached. Nevertheless, she was always besides me, and even slept with me on the bed, near my legs or just alongside me... of course, I was supposed not to move all night long. If a dared to turn to the other side or simply move a leg or an arm, then she reacted as an embarrassed old Victorian English lady, and got down the bed to sleep in her basket-bed.

But, my other cat, her son, not just love to be petted (he gets relaxed and eventually asleep) but he is a big petter too!!! He is very kind and sweet and lovely, kinda melancholic indeed, if human, he would probably be a poet or a tormented writer, or a devoted to others.

So I think it would depend more on each cat personality (or catsonality shouldn't we say?) than in the fact of being a cat.

For me, cats, dogs, and most of animals, or at least all mammals, are just like tiny people. It is difficult for me to see them just as "animals". And the more you interact with them, the more you realize there is something of a personality in each one of them.

alberche,

Yes..its soooooo true, cats are like "little people" and amazing to watch. We are lucky to have them in our lives, even for a short while.

Every photo of me when im younger shows me holding a cat, any poor cat, that lived near us,our old cat was so loving too.The other one didn't like being touched at first.....it took a long time for me to be able to pick him up, pet him, kiss his wee head.....it was so funny , when he would raise his paw up ,as if saying ..right, i've had enough of this....Im going back to being bad now!!!!!!

Ps this batty old cat lady(Me!!!!!) is going to watch a documentary on channel5 in the  uk tonight about a woman who has 40 cats living in her house!
