Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Risk and symptoms

Hi,

5 and a half week ago I went to a strip club and I think maybe I had an exposition to HIV.  I was looking at the good lookin stripper, and when she was on the stage, she was masturbating herself at the same time.  She noticed that I was looking at her, and maybe 2-3 minutes after her dance, she came to my table to see if I wanted to go in a private room with her, but I said no.  The problem is, when she went to introduce herself, she gave me her hand and her hand was wet, and I think it could be vaginal secretion.  It is winter here in Montreal, Canada, and because of that my hands are all dry and are full of exzema (eczema) and I do have cracks on the top of my hand and on the side of my nails.  At that time, I also had a little cut on my hands.

10 days after, I got a little painfull white pimple on my tongue.  After that, nothing until monday at the beginning of this week, 5 and a half week after exposure.  I now have a sore throat, and it is painful when I swallow.  I don't have any fever or other symptoms.  Maybe I have a swollen lymph node, but I'm not an expert to find and touch them, but I feel some kind of bump on the side of my neck.  On Tuesday morning, I also got some diarrhea, and the liquid coming out with it was very yellow ( seemed like Mr.Clean).  As of this morning, my sore throat starts to disappear a little, which is good I think.

1-With those information, do you think it could be ARS symptoms, or I should not be worried because of this?

2-Is it possible to have ARS symptoms 5 weeks after an exposure?

3-Usually, how long last those symptoms?

4-  Before I had my sore throat, I went to give blood (19 days after exposure).  Should I call them to tell them there's potentially a risk, or I didn't had a risk at all?

5-If they test my blood with PCR and p24 (which they are), would they catch up the infection after 19 days?

Ifris,

You cannot catch HIV from shaking hands. Not even a stripper's hand. Not even if it's dripping with vaginal fluids. The cuts on your hands do not put you at any risk either.

You were not at risk of contracting HIV from this encounter and your tests have been unnecessary. You do not have HIV.

I knew a single handshake couldn't transmit the virus, but I wasn't sure of it if vaginal secretion and cuts were involved.  As a coincidence, I got a strep throat 5 week after, so I didn't know what to think after all this.....

You wouldn't get HIV from a hundred handshakes with hands dripping with vaginal secretions. HIV is a fragile virus. Sexually the only confirmed means of transmission are through unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. Anything else is only risky theoretically.

Use condoms for intercourse consistently and you will be well and effectively protected. It's really just as simple as that in terms of sexual risk.
