Smithsonian Removes Jesus/AIDS Video
« on: December 01, 2010, 08:14:58 pm »
In what is undoubtedly the first depressing volley in a return of the censorship and culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s, the Smithsonian has removed a four-minute video, intended to represent the suffering of AIDS patients, because of a short sequence of ants crawling over a crucified Christ.  Its presence in a widely acclaimed exhibition about gay portraiture and love at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., raised the ire of Christianists and right-wing Republicans (actually, that's redundant, since there now are no other kind of Republicans), who are now threatening to withhold any federal funding of the national organization, although the cost of the exhibit was raised from private funders.

The 1987 piece is by acclaimed artist David Wojnarowicz, who died from AIDS-related illness in 1992 at the age of 37, and was a tribute to his lover, noted photographer Peter Hujar, who predeceased him, also from AIDS-related complications.

Art critic Blake Gopnik, in today's Washington Post, discusses the real meaning of this cowardly act of censorship--homophobia, pure and simple:

That was early AIDS art back then; savage and shocking and ruthless. How soon we forget

At least some art galleries around DC are showing this work in protest of it's removal
