Congrats!  I've always admired people like you.  I mean people with low CD4s who keep it together and know things will be okay.  I worry about my situation.  It helps me to realize that if you have the resolve to know things will get better, as they are, I should definitely stop worrying so much.

All the best for higher and higher numbers!

It's probably going to take a couple of years to come back from 16 t-cells, but Phase 1 is to beat down the virus.  So a big 'thumbs-up' for that!

CD4: 133
VL: UD
CD4%: 15 (this is up from 8% the last time I checked it so the biggest and most encouraging gain from this set of labs)
LDL: 110
HDL: 56
Testosterone: 592

Still making upward progress on the CD4, albeit very very slowly.  I think my LDL is a little high but considering the amount of junk I eat coupled with the meds that's really no surprise.  Doctor did say my good cholesterol was very good.  Anyway I think I'll get another blood draw in 3-4 months just to keep up with my progress.

Edit:  The downsides are I'm still going through mild anxiety on a pretty much daily basis which I presume is caused by the sustiva and I've started developing a tingling in my toes coupled with numbness, this comes and goes, but has been happening off and on for about a month now.  Unfortunately this is what I'm guessing this is some sort of peripheral neuropathy it just seems way too damn early for that seeing as I've only been on meds for a year and a half now.

Hi,

Great numbers!

Cholesterol: are you kidding ? Total cholesterol and low HDL is a concern for many people.

The Holy grail of cholesterol is to have HDL above 60 and a ratio LDL/HDL less than 2 (for a man).
The framingham study and its consequence the Framingham risk index (google for it) is a score based risk calculator
that adds up 'risk' points (age, diabetes, high LDL, HIV infection itself... add to the score).

That rating system has a notable few exceptions, the one of most interest is that some markers score negatively.
they DEDUCT from your score, in other words they are BONUS points.

Risk calculators based on the above depend on local guidelines (due to factors such as food/lifestyle/ethnicity in various parts of the world)

So I am not putting hard numbers in the following comment but one thing can be said:
- HDL > 60 and LDL/HDL > 2 are such heavyweights in the various scoring systems that they kind of erase anything else.

So your cholesterol numbers are very very good and should be the least of your concerns !

Your other numbers are restoring consistently: there is no rush

I am very happy for you !

Eric

Numbers from January 11th:

I've started developing a tingling in my toes coupled with numbness, this comes and goes, but has been happening off and on for about a month now.  Unfortunately this is what I'm guessing this is some sort of peripheral neuropathy it just seems way too damn early for that seeing as I've only been on meds for a year and a half now.

Good job on the numbers!!  Have you mentioned this numbness and tingling to your Doctor?

My neuropathy started about 3-4 months, after starting on meds. But I don't think the neuropathy was med related.  More from the virus, and a crapped out immune system at that time.

I only take Atripla and a multivitamin daily.  I'm supposed to also be on Mepron, but I don't like/take it.  My doctor also said I may want to get on Biaxin, but I need to do some research on it.

Trey, I've missed you around here.  Where have you been?  I'm a little worried about you not taking the Mepron, but you've heard all that and I'm sure you're sick of hearing it.  I'm certainly in no position to tell people about taking meds.

Anyway, it was good hearing from you.  Congrats on the improvement!  That percentage increase must be reassuring with the continued UD viral load.

Disenchanted?  Oh such a polite way of saying it.  I had to give myself a timeout a while back also.  One thing I was curious about, how did you keep your vl sow low while having such a low CD4 count and why did you wait to start meds?  Just curious -

My VL was controlled by the meds really quickly, the CD4 count has almost nothing to do with it.  Without the VL being so high it's allowing my CD4 to recover.  As for waiting to start meds, when I was diagnosed my first blood draw's numbers were catastrophically low.  It took about 2 months for me to get approved through ADAP while I hovered in that extremely low CD4 and massive VL range before I could actually get on meds.  I was calling constantly to try to begin the process.  The best guess is I was infected anywhere from 5-10 years before I was diagnosed.

My doc places more emphasis on the VL than he does the CD 4 count. I am still relatively to all of this and am trying to understand. The way I understand it is that everyone's CD-4 can vary but only HIV poz peeps have a viral load and keeping that down is more important.

Anyone??

Chile, ten years ago?  Were you doing the truck-stop circuit at the tender age of 17?

Congrats on your improvement.

CD4: 149
CD4%: 12
VL: <20

The drop in CD4% is troubling to me, down from 15% 3 months ago, but without a rebound in VL I don't know why this would happen?

Some people that went down to single digits upon diagnosis just take a long, long time to rebuild their immune system, and have periodic dips in their numbers.  What did your doctor say?

Also, are you still not taking your PCP prophylactic?

I am not. I asked him about dapsone in place of mepron (as I was seeing him due to yet another staph infection) and I guess he didn't hear what I said.  I have plans to talk to him as soon as we're both free as I've been incredibly busy lately.  He just told me what the CD4, CD4% and VL were.  The staph infection might have something to do with it,  because I know your CBC rises when you have an active infection, which could make the CD4% lower 'artificially'.

Edit: oh and I always do my blood work at like 7-8am so they might be a little lower than they would be if I were to take them in the afternoon.

I understand how frustrating that can be.  In December my percentage was 19, on the last blood test, in March, it was 15%.  ( a drop of 4%).  I've been kind of used to this during these past 8 years of treatment.  Percentage is always up and down.

I find it seriously worrying that you've not been taking something for PCP for as long as you have.
