Recent penetrative partner faint positive on OraQuick
« on: June 19, 2013, 01:12:47 am »
I had a receptive anal encounter (unprotected) with a very very close friend (we grew up together) about 3 weeks ago. It only lasted a few minutes and he didn't ejaculate inside. I know personally every other person he has had sex with (four). Two of them have tested negative this week because of this incident, and my friend previously tested negative after the encounters with the first partner. I am the fourth. This week, he had a faint positive line on an OraQuick test. Not looking good.

I immediately bought a home OraQuick test from CVS and tested negative. The top line was sort of faint, so I'm afraid it may be inaccurate. Prior to this, I had never had receptive anal sex and only very briefly penetrative anal. I was last tested in January 2012 have had a 3 female partners since then (all more than 3 months ago), protected except for one brief instance (I'm male)

What do we make of this? I'm going to the health department tomorrow for another OraQuick, but I'm not sure what to do other than that. My friend who tested faintly poz also has strep throat right now and is on some antibiotics. I don't know what I'd do if I caused an infection to someone else.

Thank you guys so much for what you do, this community is truly amazing.

Hey,

This is exactly the type of situation the OraQuick home testing kit is NOT supposed to be used for. It's only to be used at the END of the THREE month window period.

It's not meant to be used for testing/screening your partners. You absolutely CANNOT assume ANYTHING about your own hiv status going by anyone else's test results.

Faint lines don't mean much on the home tests. They're too open to misinterpretation.

What you need to do is go to a clinic and get a professional to do the test - and the earliest you should test again is at six weeks.

The vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by six weeks. A six week negative is highly unlikely to change, but must be confirmed at the three month point.

You can find a testing center near you by entering your ZIP code into the top search box at poz.com's Health Services Directory.

Whatever your results, you're going to be ok. Please learn from this and stop having unprotected intercourse with people of unknown hiv status. You cannot go by what a person says about their hiv status - many people only assume they're hiv negative, and some people will lie.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Thank you, Ann.

I was just hoping to rule out that I was already positive before the intercourse. We'll cross the next bridge in a few weeks.

Everyone else had their Oraquick swabs done at the health clinic, all negative except for my friends.
