Way to destroy HIV
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:32:38 pm »
Hi Everyone - I am new to the forum.  I heard something on the news last night about research being done to destroy HIV.  This is happening in Houston, TX.  They say the only holdup for testing on human subjects would be lack of funding.  Does anyone know if this happens often or if this is one that is on the up and up.  The website is www.kvue.com and the title is HOUSTON DOCTORS SAY THEY MAY HAVE FOUND A WAY TO DESTROY HIV.  As always I am praying for a cure!!!!!

I think this is exciting news, but I don't think we should be dancing in the streets just yet. Maybe, a skip to the left and a hop to the right may do, but not a full polka just yet. ;D ;D

I wouldn't rush people.

A respected team at the University of Texas has identified a novel target for a different, potentially viable point of intervention to treat HIV:

http://www.uthouston.edu/media/newsreleases/nr2008/hiv.htm

-- The Achilles heel, a tiny stretch of amino acids numbered 421-433 on gp120, is now under study as a target for therapeutic intervention. Sudhir Paul, Ph.D., pathology professor in the UT Medical School, said, “Unlike the changeable regions of its envelope, HIV needs at least one region that must remain constant to attach to cells. If this region changes, HIV cannot infect cells. Equally important, HIV does not want this constant region to provoke the body’s defense system. So, HIV uses the same constant cellular attachment site to silence B lymphocytes - the antibody producing cells. The result is that the body is fooled into making abundant antibodies to the changeable regions of HIV but not to its cellular attachment site. Immunologists call such regions superantigens. HIV’s cleverness is unmatched. No other virus uses this trick to evade the body’s defenses.”

sez the Texans' press release, and they are right. It remains to be seen if this unchangeable region of the HIV genetic make-up is indeed unchangeable and/or can be attacked effectively.

Nerdy types can decipher this abstract:

Catalytic antibodies to HIV: Physiological role and potential clinical utility
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18558365

This definitely falls into the "more work needs to be done" category, but it is interesting basic science (and, ahem, I feel rather smug cos I did point out this area as an interesting line of investigation suggested by some papers on lupus research to some eminent HIV docs in 2002 and was kinda poo-pooed, so there docs! poo to you).

So, more work you scientists please, and less hype you journos (as if)

There was a short, readable AIDSMEDS report on this story in July:
