Mega-Church Pastor Comes Out As Gay

There seems to be so many pastors coming out as gay lately---or being caught anyway.  However, this pastor does it in a good way.  You can read the story and watch the video of his emotional speech to his congregation.

I just wanted to say this video takes an investment of time as it is an hour long; however, it is well worth it.  The pastor talks about his life and knowing he was gay since a child, but hid it.  He also gets into passages from the Bible that are used against gays and what he has to say about how people pick and choose verses.  His cousin speaks at the end, who is also a pastor, and talks about people using the Bible as a weapon.  He touches on all the gay suicides to gays in the military.  He tells the story of gay couples who have no rights.  Specifically, he talks about how a man's partner was killed in war, but the partner was not informed.  The dead partner's parents were informed.  The same parents who disowned him.  He also talks about how some have shunned him and asked that he step down.  However, I was impressed with the congregation.

He would be a good reason to go back to church. There's no real reason for him to step down as he did not disgrace anyone by being honest and courageous to honor the truth.  ;)

Bless you Bishop JIm. The world churches are all in a mess. Be ready for bigger things - it's pretty clear the gate is now opened for the Truth to be resurrected.

I respectfully disagree that this is a man worth admiring.

He didn't do anything illegal. Also, its good that he's coming out now.

However I question the personal integrity of someone who knows he is gay and hides it, doing everything possible to hide it, and marries for 20+ years, and has a profession that is so implicated in the shame he feels so much that he hides his true self.

But happy he is on the road to some personal integration.

Wow at 52.....coming out....what a hero. Sorry don't buy it! As for the ex-wife's do, that looks like weekly road kill I imagine in most parts of the country.

Thanks for posting, it was an interesting video.

I got the impression, too, though, that he's also trying to save his church by implementing a bit of "spin control". Still, I'm glad he did it and I hope he lives up to what he insinuates he is going to do; mainly, take on the mainstream religious right on this hot topic.

I wouldn't put him in the same league as the Texas city council man, though, with respect to being a "true hero".

TedNlou2   Thanks for the topic. When I have an hour, I'll try to listen to his apology. I am a recovering Southern Baptist, so I am already over organized mainstream religions' views on Gays and Lesbians, etc. And I am completely happy with my spiritual self. There are Gay churches too.
But mostly I havn't laughed so hard in weeks. Mostly it is just her "Hair Don't" Miss Philicia, AlanBama, ds4146. I am laughing my ass off. Thank you!
