Howdy

I had a pill in my pocket and when I went to take it I noticed it wasn't there.  I think it popped out of my pocket onto the floor and I can't find it.  The dog and cat are both in the room, and knowing them, if something hit the floor they were on it.  Is there any harm if they ate it?

Pete

PS - I know none of you are vets (or maybe someone is) so I am just asking for some ideas about it.

Man you never know how things will affect animals Pete.  I would definitely keep a very close eye on them.  I worry about his myself sometimes.  My pit follows me all over the house (under the chair now) and when I take my meds if I drop one I have to fight him off it.

Ok, I called the vet and he said "That is a new question...let me do some research and get back to you".  He thinks if anything, they might get the shits or barf, but since it is designed to fight a human virus, it probably wont do anything.

I will let you know what he says when he calls back.

I'm interested to find out --- I even googled to see if there was anything on there about this... I suppose some of the reaction (barf or sh*t) might depend on dog's size.  Hope everything will be okay.  If it was Atripla the dog would probably have tripped out dreams..... I would think though that one pill shouldn't have to adverse an effect....  ???

There was a recent question on thebody.com about a dog possibly eating an Atripla, link below.

The few times my dog has eaten anything questionable (such as one time one of them swallowed half of a corn cob, which can be very dangerous), I have given them a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (about a tablespoon, maybe less, depending on size of the dog) this causes them to pretty quickly vomit. The corn cob just came right out before it could do damage to the intestines.

Not sure if the same thing works for cats.

Vet called back.  He said he found no literature regarding any warnings against the specific drugs but based on what it is made up of, there should be no adverse effects.  He than gave me some very scientific explanation about canine and feline DNA blah blah blah...I just pretended I understood.

I think he got excited to get a new question.  We also thought the tab was too big for the cat to eat so he might have batted it under something.

That's good news Pete --- you will probably find it somewhere around when you least expect to.  That definitely was a new question - although, I am sure it has happened to others.

Check to see which of your pets gets lipo. Then you'll have the culprit.

I think I'd just watch for diarrhea, nausea, and the other fun side effects.  Bet your dog never touches that floor goody again.... lol.  Just think... we'are about 150 to 200 and the dog is probably 50 to 80 so the dosage is about 3 times stronger for them... should be pretty liquifying.
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.
