I'm going to Texas on Saturday...
« on: January 07, 2007, 06:16:59 pm »
... Austin, to be exact.  I'll be there for several days.

I've never been but am very much looking forward to hanging out there.

I can only glean so much information from the Internets about cool places to go while I'm there.  I enjoy drinking... drinking... and going to shows to see bands and stuff.  I'm pretty easy to please and as long as a bar isn't filled with yuppies, I'm happy as a clam in white sauce.  Although I'm at my most happy clam-like in dives....

Could anyone with any experience with Austin help me out?  Thanks!

Well unfortunately we have some narrow minds around here, but fortunately you're going to the most liberal area of the state!

I will PM you with my contact info.  I could maybe, possibly, find a place or two to do some drinking ;)

Austin is one of the hidden treasures of the US. A great city. It has something for everyone. I try and go there every couple months, of course I am in Houston,so its no big deal.
I have no idea where the gay bars are, but the 6th street is crazy every night and the music is great. I always stay in walking distance of 6th st and town lake, which also puts you in walking distance of many restaraunts and coffee shops.

Aupoint,

Welcome to Austin.  I'm not really up on cool places to hang out / drink, I just know
where I like to go when I have some free time (but I don't consider myself to be the
the coolest guy in the world).  I would suggest perusing the Austin Chronicle's
"City Guide" to get some ideas:

Enjoy...

Mysterious dead birds prompt downtown Austin shutdown
POSTED: 10:02 a.m. EST, January 8, 2007

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Police shut down 10 blocks of businesses in the heart of downtown Austin early Monday after dozens birds were found dead.

Experts were testing for any sort of environmental contaminant or gas or chlorine leaks that might have killed off the animals, police spokeswoman Toni Chovanetz said.

There were no reports of any humans harmed, but a 10-block stretch of the main north-south route through downtown, several side streets and all buildings in the area were blocked off and expected to remain off-limits until about noon, Chovanetz said.

The bird carcasses were found overnight along Congress Avenue between Sixth and Eighth streets.

The street closure Monday morning stretched from the front of the state Capitol to a section of the Colorado River known as Town Lake. There was no immediate word on whether the Capitol would be affected Monday, the day before the legislative session was to begin.

I was reminded of this thread when I heard the story about the dead birds..  weird.
although I have only fuzzy memories of my trips to Austin, Id definitely second the reccomendation for a
6Th street crawl, and the Austin music scene is one of the best in the country.

One attraction that Ive never made it to is the bridge where all of the bats take flight from at sunset.. its supposed to be pretty amazing, Im sure one of the locals can point you to it who knows it may be a great cruising spot..

have fun....

Sorta good news:

"We do not feel there is a threat to the public health," said Adolfo Valadez, the medical director for Austin and Travis County Health and Human Services.

He said preliminary air-quality tests showed no dangerous chemicals, though the dead birds would be sent for further testing to rule out viruses or poison.

Experts at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society said the most likely cause was a deliberate poisoning of the troublesome grackles, which is more common than people think. It's also legal, with local permits, said Greg Butcher, director of bird conservation at the Audubon in Washington.

I'll definitely be thinking of a lot of you while I'm there!

I did see the thing about all the dead birds... I think someone probably poisoned them as a prank... something weird usually happens to a place right before I come visit it.  Like my friend and I were planning a roadtrip to New Orleans for September 2005.  Didn't take that one...

Now, dead birds in Austin.

It made me think of that Tom Lehrer song...

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you?  'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes every Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Everything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We've gained notoriety,
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
With our games.
They call it impiety
And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment,
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strych'nine
We feed to a pigeon.
(It just takes a smidgin!)
To poison a pigeon in the park.
