In need of advice, please help.
« on: May 09, 2012, 01:23:49 pm »
Three months ago I went out for the first time in a really long time. I ended up getting drunk and having sex with a girl I barley know and believe is a sex worker. I specifically remember using a condom. But I question myself since I was so drunk, if I were sober I would have never been in this situation. Anyway I tested for HIV at one of my state's Health departments exactly a month later and tested Negative. I am unsure of the type of test that was administered, I just know that they took my blood and I waited 2 weeks for the result. This test was negative. At exactly 10 weeks, 2 days I had another test done for an immigration physical and that was also a blood test that took 2 days for the results and this test was also negative. Still worried I tracked down the girl that I had the initial sex with and she stated that I did infact use a condom. But for some reason I am unable to shake the nervous feeling that I still may be infected. Especially since after my ten week Negative result I had unprotected sex with my wife, I did not ejaculate in her but she still Breast feeds our 13 month old daughter and I terrified that I may have given something to the both of them. I went back to the health department yesterday and asked one of the nurses if I should retest after 10 weeks and she said don't bother and not to worry, then I also asked someone who I thought was a doctor there but she said she was not so I assume she is a counselor, she told me that I did not have to test again that day but to retest and 6 months, confusing me even more.
So my question is my 72 day negative test result conclusive, and is my conscious getting the best of me? Oh also all tested for other STD's and those were all negative. Please

Your tests are conclusive. You do not have HIV.

The testing window has been three months for several years now.

Thanks for the prompt response.
The last test I've taken was done at just under 3 months, two weeks before to be exact. So being on how the test was not taken at twelve to thirteen weeks. Would the 10 weeks days test be still considered conclusive? Would my status really change at 12-13 weeks?

Although I understand that your being drunk at the time has made you worry and wonder, it sounds to me as you actually did use a condom. And with your negative test result at a little more than 10 weeks I agree with JK that you're HIV negative.

The only reason you need to re-test is if you are going to worry and wonder. If that's the case there is a simple solution. Get tested again and collect what I expect will be another negative result. But testing for you would only be for your peace of mind at this point.

Thank you very much Andy, your words are encouraging but my guilt continues to get the best of me. I decided to retest again on Friday which would be over 13 weeks, and I will try to be optimistic. From what I've read from you guys on this forum most people who test positive have antibodies by 4-6 weeks. I just do not want to be the unlucky one develops them after 10.

Worried,

You're going to get another negative result, but if that's what you need to put this behind you, then go for it. The nurse was wrong when she mentioned a six month test - the window period has been three months for years now, and that is true no matter what generation of test is used.

This is all about your feelings of guilt. You can't change what you did, so you're going to have to find a way to deal with it. Counseling may help, but we can't provide that for you here. You need to realise that hiv is just a virus - it's not a punishment for straying husbands.

So Ann, a 72 day (10 weeks, 2 days) negitive result is just as conclusive as a 3 month negitive result? I know I keep asking the same question but I just want to verify, in order to put my mind at ease.

Worried,

Officially, only a three month (either 12 or 13 weeks, it doesn't matter) is conclusive.

HOWEVER. I have never seen a six week negative go on to turn positive at three months, so I certainly do not expect your 72 day negative to change either.

It's up to you what you do. But do not expect to use this forum to keep asking about it - either accept it or test again. If you keep posting without action one way or the other, you'll be given a time out.

It doesn't sound like you ever had a risk in the first place anyway.

Thanks Ann, and your right there is no point in my constant asking and misuse of this forum for that I appologize. Your encouraging words along JK's, and Andy's have given me peace of mind. I will test again tomorrow morning as verification and post my results.
Thanks again.

I frequent this forum quite often and see alot of people asking questions similar to mine. They want to know if their 6-11 week negitive result is conclusive, and the answer always is that  a negative result at that time is a strong indication that they are negative and not Likely to change.
So My question is have any of you guys ever seen someone go from a negative to a positive after 6, 8, or 10 weeks of testing, regardless of the generation of tests. Sing used?
Because not likely is somewhat reassuring but WILll not change definitly puts ones mind more at ease.

So,

Did you not read what I wrote to you earlier?

Worried,

Officially, only a three month (either 12 or 13 weeks, it doesn't matter) is conclusive.

HOWEVER.
I have never seen a six week negative go on to turn positive at three months, so I certainly do not expect your 72 day negative to change either.

Ann

None of our authorised posters have seen a six week or more negative turn positive. Between us all, we have probably over 100 years experience.

It's pretty obvious that you're back here asking more questions instead of just getting tested and getting it over with. I warned you about doing that, so now I'm giving you a time out.

Do not attempt to create a new account to get around your time out because if you do, you will be permanently banned.
