I got a letter from the IRS
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:56:26 pm »
I got a letter from the IRS yesterday telling me I qualified for the stimulus payment. I am on ssi disability and only get $834.00 a month. Included was a tax form with instructions how to fill it out . It was my understanding that people like me with no taxable income were exempt from receiving the stimulus payment. Has anyone else received this in the mail or heard of anyone else getting one ? ....Jeff

Our ASO was telling everyone to fill out a tax form, even if you have not filed in several years.

You will basically be filing a 'zero' return....for W-2 earnings, put 0.   Then, there is a line that asks for Social Security benefits...put your total from the 1099 for 2007 there, then out to the right of that, amount taxable = 0.

I have heard different stories, as to who will receive the refunds, and how much.   Personally, I will believe it when I receive the check, deposit it, and it clears the bank.  ;)

Jeff,

This is from today's Wall Street Journal:

"Individuals should remember that the only way to get a stimulus payment is to file a 2007 tax return," the IRS said. Those not required to file a 2007 return but who received at least $3,000 in Social Security, veterans or certain other kinds of benefits need to file a Form 1040A to get the rebate.

So it looks like you should be getting the tax rebate. Just fill out the Form 1040A. It's a very simple form and shouldn't take more than a few minutes of your time. (Don't waste your money by going to HR Block or some other tax preparer.)

I got one in the mail for my son who is 18 and receives SS death benefits. I ignored it because I claimed him on my taxes.

i got the letter (cause I'm on disability and haven't filed in years) and filed online.  ;D

Not going to count on the $$ until the check is in my hand  ;), though the extra monies will be greatly appreciated since my partner just spent the last 25 days in the hospital.

I got one today too!
It came in my name FOR (one of my sons names)......so it says you are eligible for a payment if you have a total of $3000 or more in qualifying income.
Each of my kids get checks every month(in my name for them)..They each got a 1099 with thier social security numbers.  They each got under $3000.
So when I file do I put the total that is on my 1099 and thier names as dependents or do I have to add the total amount they all got to my total and put them as dependents?

I am thinking because the money is under thier ss numbers I should just put my total and them as dependents but I wanted to see what you guys thought?

Thanks,
Snow

when the thing (bill or whatever it was) for the stimulus package it was only approved after the inclusion for who received the checks made sure to cover SSDI, vets, and some other sources. go ahead and file as soon as you can. you can also look at the IRS website and there are some instructions about who will get the checks first, direct deposit if you give them the information AND you have to file by April 15 in order to get it...

I think this "stimulous package" is a really dumb idea. The nation is trillions of dollars in debt and we are paying billions to stay in Iraq so let give away more money that we don't even have in hopes that people will buy crap at Walmart.

Not that I won't cash my $600 check, but I will use it to pay debt and not buy more crap.

I am a one man army against recession apparently. Yesterday I spent over 900 to get the car fixed so it can pass emissions. I have spent my 600 before I even get it and then some :-[

I have also received the letter today.  After 12 years of disability and doing without, $300.00 sounds better than nothing.   ;D Have the best day
