Fewer HIV Patients Becoming Drug Resistant

Certainly good news.  The province's strategy of free HIV treatment for all seems to be paying off, combined with easier regimens:

The number of HIV patients who develop drug-resistant infections is dropping dramatically in B.C. as a result of improved treatments, says the author of a newly published study on the issue.

“This is good news, with big implications,” said Dr. Richard Harrigan of the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS.

His study, published in the Jan. 1 edition of Clinical Infectious Diseases, reports that between 1996 and 2008, there has been a twelve-fold decrease in drug resistance. (bold mine)

That is certainly good news.  Probably a result of easier to follow regimens with less pronounced/toxic side effects (which in turn allow people to remain adherent).

We have come a long way.  It can only get better.

yep. once I got meds that didn't make me puke every day, I actually kept taking them every day. Instead of going on and off meds, and running into resistance issues all the time, I stayed on meds long enough to finally reach undetectable and my health has actually been improving the last few years. ;)
