Title: Advice... condom break and PEP
Post by: pg80sf on February 26, 2009, 10:23:32 am
Hey everyone

I had an incident last night with a guy for the first time, broken condom.  Used it correctly, right size, plenty of lube, but the first time he went to push into me it felt not right and I pushed him back - the head of the condom had ripped.

He didn't fully penetrate me that first time, was only semi-erect, and we both said there didn't appear to be pre-cum, as he said he normally doesn't.  We talked and he assured me he was negative, that the penetration was extremely brief, and that there was no fluid.

I'm trying to be rational about this, but also thinking about seeking PEP.  Based on experience, is PEP warranted for this sort of situation?  Given the brevity of this, I'm not so sure. I did freak out a bit last night, and now this guy is pretty annoyed.

Thanks very much

pg,

PEP is absolutely NOT warranted in this instance. PEP is serious business and not something to be taken over an extremely low risk like the one you describe.

You'd be wise to test in three months time, but you should be testing regularly anyway. Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

I fully expect you to test negative in relation to this very brief incident.

And by the way, along with using condoms correctly, they need to be stored correctly and used within their expiry date. This is also very important. Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line. You never know, you might learn something new.
