Title: AMG in Brighton/London
Post by: Cliff on August 30, 2009, 03:44:54 am
Brighton

Gay capital of England
Glorious pebble beach and pier
Sussex countryside
Royal Pavilion
Tons of pubs
Great dining
Great parks and green spaces
Lots of shopping
Good restaurants

Hotels cheaper or on par ($111-125 pn) with other AMG destinations (Boston and San Francisco)

Only 50 minutes from London, the #1 tourist destination in the world (15 million international tourists visits every year).  Airfare to London $600-650 from major US airports (again on par with some AMG destinations).

London Eye
Westminister/Big Ben
River Thames
St. Paul's cathedral
Royal palaces
Lots of parks
Double Decker buses
World's best clubs
Tons of theatre
The Gherkin building
Greenwich
Tower bridge
Tons of galleries and museums (many free, unlike those in the US!)
Good public transportation (do they even know what that is in Vegas or Nawling)
Diverse city
Great architecture (if a bit random)
Liberal city, try holding hands in Nawlings or kissing in Vegas (no one would bat an eye in London, maybe even cheer you on)

All and all, a much better deal than Vegas (which is boring after 2 days) or Nawlings (practically a ghost town now).

Oh and a moderate climate.

Count me in for either of those places!

London/Brighton sounds really good too.  Who could pass up a world-class city like London?   Now this would definitely have to be an 'off-season' gathering to take advantage of the cheap fares.  But that shouldn't be a problem.

Plus, London has the best Mayor Hair of any city (even if he is a bit of a prick).

Your Mayor may have the hair but does your Mayor dress up Cliff..this is our Mayor Tim Shadbolt who starred in our local musical theatre of Rocky Horror last year..he put Invercargill on the map and is a real charactor..and well loved by everyone..great guy.

BTW..Brighton and London are two good choices.

Hugs
Jan :-*

I adore London, but I've been there at least a dozen times.  Plus I'm sure I'd run into my ex and he'd spit on me.  Oh, but come to think of it I have a free place to stay with this Lebanese boy.

PS: I would have thought Paris is the #1 tourist spot -- is it London now?  I've been to Brighton but that was over 20 years ago.

omg... and we could all do lunch at Harvey Nicks!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZVjcnlc7XM

LOL.  Lovey our mayor Jan!  Yeah, that beats good/crazy hair anyday!

Robert- Haven't done the JTR tour.  There are loads in London!

Philly- Not sure if Paris was ever ahead of London (at least by counting international visitors).  But that is a good point.  Paris is only 2 hours away on the train!  Why go to Hoover dam or Marshes of L.A., when you can take a quick trip to Paris!  I've done day trips to Paris loads of time.

I love Brighton, been there many times. Oh and by the way, if you're planning on New Orleans in August, you might as well have it on the face of the sun. No self-respecting queen would step foot in New Orleans before Southern Decadence in September.

Sounds like a lot of fun; London's always been on my 'to visit' list.  Perhaps we'll go once the situation here improves.

I was there just last month and you couldn't walk down Oxford Street and Regent Street without bumping into someone NOT carrying a map.

Indeed.  This shows London as most visited city (2007 figures), followed by Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Paris then NYC.  France is the most visited country.

Oh wait, there's a line under that entry that says Paris is the most visited.  Guess it varies on how the statistics are figured.

London ranked #1 as far as international visitors. Paris ranked #1 as far as visitors overall (international and domestic).

In London we can take a Thames River Cruise and then there's Shakespeare's Globe Theatre.

...and the museums and galleries, and royal parks and the changing of the guard and street markets...

Yes and you don't have to break the law to enter the country!  The UK doesn't have any restrictions on HIV immigration (even for work/residency immigration).  Perhaps it's time we spent Aidsmeds gathering money in a country that actually welcomes people living with HIV, rather than in a country where some members have to break the law just to participate!

Hang on.. Hong Kong ranks above NYC? Probably the Mainland tourists then.

I will definitely vote for London but if you guys wanna come and visit our humble city I can surely host.. ;D

Well said Cliff, even though my bf, if allowed to vote, wants to vote for NO. I reminded him about the travel ban and the implications for bringing his meds in, but he didn't seem concerned. Yes, I tried to get him to vote for London :D but he wasn't having it. Don't think he's too fond of London. He'd love to go to NO though and see Bourbon Street.
