We've just had a fire!

Someone in my building it seems was bored and decided to set one of the old mattresses alight that had been dumped at the backstairs by management. The building filled with smoke but I'm happy to report no other damage beyond the mattress.

Building manager handled the situation very professionally.......fire brigade had to wake him upon their arrival and he then sat out the front with a beer watching the action.

The scary part of this is that the fire alarms are so regular (this is the 3rd alarm in the last 2 weeks) that only about half the residents actually evacuated.

I've packed my backpack with my valuables for tonight just in case we have a repeat of the situation....fingers crossed the rest of the night will be quiet. In the meanwhile the place bloody stinks of burnt wet mattress; yuck! :P

Almost forgot.....


I'm getting quite a collection of "happy snaps" of this place. Can't wait until the day I move out and I get to post the whole series on "Trip Adviser" to compliment the "glowing" succession of 1 star reviews this place has received from the traveling public ;D

That is the eventual plan. Once I get the GI issues under control I intend to take on any type of work I can get and then when I can get a bond together, move on.

The hospital social worker has tried to link me in with HIV services but I wont go down that path, I am not a charity case. I have a roof over my head, I can feed myself and I have enough money left over to afford a few luxuries such as internet etc. I consider myself one lucky son of bitch to be living in a country with a stable economy and a first class public health and welfare system.

I guess for me bitching about this place gives me some control over my circumstances and allows me the opportunity to utilize my often dark sense of humor in a cathartic way.

The Morning After......

A Couple of Photos




Rumor mill is running wild at the moment but these seem to be the closest I can get to facts about the situation,

Apparently the police were around this morning and I've heard that an accelerant was used to burn the mattress....so not an accidental fire.

I'm told that those who tried to put out the fire had to run upstairs to fetch fire extinguishers because the ones closest to the fire weren't functional. In addition the back gate (which is a fire exit) was found to be chained when the fire brigade arrived (you can see the chain on the gate in the first photo)

That's about it for the moment.

Glad the fire is out... lets hope the smell of smoke does not linger too long.

If I had a mattress like that I'd set fire to it as well, just not in the place were I hang my hat.
