Mouse! Come to my rescue!
« on: June 21, 2007, 10:00:36 pm »
I've had a new visitor for almost a week. I've named it Terry. It's a grey mouse. I tried to make a gentle mouse trap, but Terry got the cheese and laughed hard at my stupid trap. Yesterday, Terry ran from the kitchen to behind the TV set while I was watching TV, then ran back to the kitchen. Terry was making fun of me.

Today I bought a glue trap. I don't want to kill that little thing, but it wouldn't be healthy for me to touch it to release it a mile away. I can't kill that thing.. and I can't touch it.. what are your suggestions?

I'm not a Mouse, but I have an eclectic outlook. You need to soak some cheese chunks in red wine for a day in the fridge, the put them in a humane trap.  Or leave out a lot and he might very well just pass out on the floor.  Then you pick him up with tongs, wrap him up in a towel, and take over the road to let him go.

Otherwise, snap his neck, squeeze out his guts, skin him then cook him with some salt cod, and olive oil.

That's what I do with my tricks. I didn't think it would apply to mice too.

No sticky traps. They're impossible to get them off of without injuring them most of the time and it's incredibly gory (involves skin ripping and all of that stuff, it's not pretty).

Try a humane trap:
http://www.abundantearth.com/store/mousetrap1.html
(There are others).

They'll work eventually, usually homemade things don't do it. Mice are small and light-weight and quick, and know how to get in and out of things they're not supposed to. Also, if there's one mouse there's probably more, so even if you successfully catch one keep them out for a while.

I tried this one: http://glass.typepad.com/journal/2005/09/how_to_catch_a_.html

But Terry got the cheese and escaped the trap  ::)

It seems like there is only one mouse. My neighbor's house is being redone and that's where I think it comes from. I'd like to just catch the mouse and release it a mile away, but I've not been able to "humanely" do it. It's smarter than I am :D

May I suggest getting a cat....Not trying to end the mice's life but sometimes when mice gets a whiff of a kitty around they will leave...And wonders what traps you use to catch a trick.Remember most tricks has treats that you really don't want.......SURPRISE and it's something that has your dick pissing fire.....or dripping something toxic.....*starts singing Britney Spear's Toxic*.... ;D

milker, perhaps now it's the time to familiarize yourself with hand weapons and learn to defend your home. In case the beast moves too fast to shoot it, think about strategically placed mines. ;)

Get rid of it or... next you will know its all clear for his extended family to set up house. Cute little germ carriers... I've used glue traps with great results... mine were baited also... a family recipe I place under my house... penut buller rolled with a little extra treat called rat poision inside always seems to get them every time.... but, be careful... you do not want the cute little mouse to die in your home... the smell lingers for days unless you find him first... Good Luck!

Problem with poison is they often crawl into a hole and die. Gets a bit smelly.
My cat often brings home "presents" in the form of birds, mice, voles, etc.  Once in a while he manages to come in the house with a live one.  If my wife is home I can usually catch the thing with a bit of bait and simply dropping a bucket over it.  That takes a bit of patience though.  If she's not home the little buggers get whacked with what ever hard object is near by.

Drowning? What sort of friends do you have? Trust a homo turn simple vermin eradication into a full blown satanic death ritual.

Milker, you have mice. Stop listening to this limp wristed mob and simply lay standard rodenticide baits and let it do the rest. They (yes there is more than one) won't die in the house and if they do you won't smell them.

Well drowning was certainly not the humane plan I had for the poor thing, but it was glued to this glue trap (I will never used those anymore), and squeaking like crazy pulling its legs like they were going to break off, I was on the phone with my friend who said: either a big hit but you risk getting mouse remains all over you, or trash can drowning, which I opted for.

I will use the standard baits next time, you're right, this glue thing is atrocious.

I now have this visual of Matty's satanic death ritual. Man, what kind of nightmare will I get tonight, thank God i'm not on Sustiva!

I once did that to a neighborhood kid who kept cutting across my lawn...I was found innocent by a jury of my peers.
A kid? I'd take a bat. No problem for me. It's animals I care for..

I had another glue trap that I set up and caught Jerry and Sherry there. I forgot about it and heard squeak squeak. I got them out of the glue (yes I wore gloves), and released them near home depot, about 3 miles away from my home, where I bought a zapping trap, which will kill the mouse instantly when it enters the trap. I found the holes where they could enter, so tomorrow I will put some wire mesh. I've been in this place for more than 3 years and never seen any rodent, but a week ago the neighboring house started being remodeled, and I believe this is what made the mouse family move to my place  :o I've also bought rodenticide but I was told to wait a week after I close the holes before I use it, to be sure that they don't die inside my house  ::)

Jerry and Sherry were glad I didn't drown them, and I will never recommend a glue trap anymore, this is a terrible trap, the mice dismember themselves trying to get out of it, or suffocate if their face is glued  :-[ Whoever invented this is evil!

cute!

I haven't seen anymore than Terry, Jerry and Sherry. So I guess I got rid of the entire family. I've left the trap just in case, but so far so good. Unless the rest of the family is preparing the retaliation  :o

I'm prepared. Kerry can call the mouse mob, I have zappers waiting. The cats in the neighborhood are complete pussies, may I say, so I've had to deal with it myself. Funny there is a new movie called Ratatouille coming out :D

Sorry to hear about your rodent probelms Milker.  If you ever see them again keep this in mind, the bubonic plague is carried by mice, so it is actually best that they get their neck snapped.  I like the standard mice traps, but use peanut butter as bait, just enough on there that they have dig at the trap to get at it.  Also, when you go to fill in the holes that you think they came in through, before filling them put some steel-wool into them.  This will detur them from burrowing as they do not like to bite the steel-wool.  Once you have suffted the hole get the expanding foam stuff to seal it all up.  Also, fall time is when they tend to re-invade.  Hope this helps!

I am told from a fairly reliable animal lover that if u use the "glue trap" method, once caught you can remove the mouse from the area using a shovel, gloves etc, and once clear carefully squirt baby oil on the point(s) of contact. The oil will allow them to free them selves and won't harm them.

Hi Milker,

I agree, the sticky traps are awful!  Never knew a mouse would gnaw through its own leg to get free, gheez!  My parents have fields around their home and mice come in during the winter.  They have used what's called a "Tin Cat" to catch the mice.  Yes, you have to go down the road and release the mouse, but its humane, at least.  The mice go in but they can't get out, it has a lid for you to open in order for you to release them.  Here's a link to a site that will give you an idea as to what it looks like!

raroy,

the holes are actually necessary holes, it's just that the wire mesh was so old it got torn up, so I replaced it.

marc,

yes I know I could have used oil to release the mouse, but given my condition I didn't really want to touch a house mouse, even with gloves.. and the terrible thing about those traps is that the mouse is pulling its leg so hard to the point that it's hurting itself even more, so I thought it was better to kill it right away.

Moonlight,

I saw the tincat thing when I was looking for a trap, but I didn't understand how it worked at that time !  :o :o

OK, so Monday, July 1st, I go out to my yard to water my flowers.  There is a dead, black "something" in my yard?!?!?!?  :o   WTF?   Turns out it was an oppossum in my yard!  Not sure if the dog got it or what, but it was nasty to clean up, I'll spare you the details........it was a little bigger than a squirrel.  All that mess to deal with, a mere two days after I post here about a tin cat, lol!  Ugh!  Turns out my neighbor has seen these oppossums in his shed, and they run under our decks, the lttle shits.......Milker, be happy you are only dealing with little mice!
