This presentation is really for all the research nerds (john) :-)

This is research from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research center and the Center for Aids research.  It is using Homing Endonucleases to cure latent HIV infection.  It is basically a newer version of the zinc finger nucleases technology.  The presentation is done by researcher Keith Jerome.

While the topic is curing latent HIV they also speak of the possiblity of curing latent Herpres Virus and Hepatits virus.  Enjoy

Wow, that was dense.  From what I could gather Homing Endonucleases are derived from yeast and will zero in on HIV's DNA inside the body's latent cells and disable it.  They've replicated this outside the body with a modified virus and it seems to work.  Pretty cool.   He said one of the main obstacles was how to deliver it into the cell and that they are looking at another virus to carry it into the body (that's how they do the ZFN's too).  Really interesting.  Thank you for posting it.

Deliveries of drugs and therapeutic tools (RNAi, Endonucleases, Evolved Recombinases, etc) have always been a major part of the problem in the steps to get it to clinical successes.
