Just Tested Positive and SCARED !!!
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:57:40 pm »
I recently tested HIV+ and have never in my life felt so lost or scared. Not knowing who to talk with or get support, I decided to turn to the Internet for information and facts.  I've found this site and the forum which is remarkable -- loaded with good information and most importantly -- support, which is what I need.

I've had my first appointment with my ID Doc over 4 weeks ago. The initial appointment went well but I didn't know what kinds of questions I needed to ask.  He did put me at ease and provided reassurance. Also recommended some Internists for a new PC Doc who is knowledgeable with HIV.   Since the lab lost my bloodwork >:(, I've had to redraw and will have my next appointment this week. Not knowing what to expect, I've been apprehensive for a few weeks now.  Not knowing what the future holds or where I will be in a year or years down the road.

I must say that everyone who posts in here has given me some comfort and reassurance on this new chapter in my life (ups and downs).  Please be here for me as I'm sure I'll have many more questions. Rest assure, I will provide any support I can to others.  Feel free to give me any advice and support.

Thanks for being here !

Hi Jayjax and welcome.
I just wanted to say that you hopefully will find support and help here, I certainly have.  Don't be afraid to ask questions, or read old threads in the different forums for things that have been discussed before.
As you will see you are not alone, and will probably find that you are not alone with any thought that you will have either.
You have tested positive.  I am pleased to hear you call it a "new chapter" in your life.  I believe that is a good way to view things.  I tested pos in 2001 and don't have any idea when I actually became pos, and went through all the emotions that I am sure you are going through now.  But everyday that you get out of bed, life throws stuff at you to deal with.  I started meds only 5 weeks ago, I was deathly afraid of them, that has turned out to be a new chapter in my life too.  We just take each step at a time.
As for the internet, stick with the legitimate sites (like this one) there is a lot of bad information out there and a lot of loonies who seem to like to post it.
For now, be gentle with yourself, and know that absolute strangers, probably on the other side of the world, are thinking of you and do give a damn.

Hi Jayjax,

I'm really sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. But it's great that you found yourself here. Like you say, this place is full of information, support and genuine caring for all people who have tested positive.

And I agree with the poster before me- be kind to yourself. It took me a really long time to figure out what that meant, but I suggest that you take time out for you to think and process what this means for you.

Like you, I was scared, and sometimes I still get a bit worried. But as you may have reasoned already, HIV is not the same disease it once was, especially as it sounds like yoju are getting medical care (despite lost bloods!). I found that reading the lessons here, and going through all the previous posts helped me in the very early days.

Has the clinic you are going to offered counselling? Or perhaps some support groups? It might help if you can speak to some HIV positive people who are doing well, and can help you cope with this rough time. I know you can make it, and it's really vital to have some support. Are you able to confide in anyone?

Believe me, I'm pretty sure I can relate to how you're feeling right now. It took me time to come to grips with this different way of seeing things, but now I feel determined to seize the opportunites in life that I once took for granted. Believe it or not, fortunately I'm healthier now that I have ever been.

And congratulations on joining this site and posting. That was a big step for me when I did it, and for me, dealing in reality has helped big time. In 2008, with the right sort of care, I'm sure you can be well for a long time.

Hang in there. I'm thinking of you, and I hope that things start making sense soon.

Hey Jayjax,

Welcome to the forums.

I don't know where you're located, but I would strongly encourage you to get ahold of the nearest ASO (Aids Service Organization).  They have trained care coordinators there who will listen to you, help you sort things out, refer you to a good therapist if need be, and can put you in touch with a support group of other people who are HIV+, which might help you.  It seems to help to some extent to have others dealing with the same things we are, so we don't feel so alone.  And if you ever need any government assistance, the care coordinators can walk you through that.  Your doctor should have that information (the ASO's phone number etc).

Right now, there's no need to panic.  I've been HIV+ since 1989.  I've gotten pretty sick a few times, have been on meds since 1990, and am finishing up a BS in college.  Life goes on.  Of course, the most important thing right now is to see what the bloodwork shows, i.e. your CD4's, percentages, and viral load.  The LESSONS section on here is a good place to start reading up on any questions you may have.

Keep on posting and keep on going, a bit at a time.
  Luv,
Betty

Hey Jayjax,
Being recently diagnosed poz Aug 21, 2008 (seroconverted Oct '07) I can definitely empathize with you.
But there is no need to be scared or to panic.  But of course it is only natural to go through that phase, everybody does.  But you can't go back and change things.  As I just read somewhere, "when I found out I was positive, I woke up and started living".  I can't agree with that more.  You have to go on with your life and with today's treatment, there is no reason why you can't.  As everyone will tell you, being hiv+ is no longer the death sentence it once was.  Modern medicine and technology has come so far, especially since 1997.

I agree with the others who have responded to your post.  Get your bloodwork done, get your numbers and go from there.  What you do from there will vary, depending on what your doctor says.  And doctor's responses vary from doctor to doctor.  Definitely keep reading the forums here.  I'm so glad I found this site.  It is a wealth of knowledge and information. (that was kinda redundant).

If you want or need someone to talk to, feel free to contact me or you can contact your local AIDS center.

Thanks everyone! Appreciate taking the time and giving me the encouragement that I need right now.  I have my follow-up visit with the ID doc and will find all the information I need from my blood work.  My initial visit with the ID doc went verywell and he put me at ease, explaining the overall diagnosis of HIV + and what it means today.  Real encouragement. He is also providing me with information on some good support groups in my area. He has already given me a good referal for a PC Doc whose very well qualified with HIV patients.  I figured I needed that more than anything.

Thanks again for all the posts and support.  I'll let you know how the my next visit went.  I'll probably need more support with more questions from me.

Later.

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to check in this evening and tell everyone that my initial check up with my ID Doc and first blood results.  My initial CD4 is 265 and viral load is 7000.  Tells me that its not that bad.  Verified that my blood is not resistant to any of the current meds.

We decided to start the meds with a 2 week followup with bloodwork to make sure everything is working as should.  We agreed to start Atripla and monitor every 2 weeks with blood tests.  Hopefully this will all work out.

Not so scared now and able to accept the challenge.  I'll start my first dose this evening before I go to bed.  We discussed the side effects and I read the list and other experiences from posts here. I believe I need to accept that everyone will experience different side effects.  I'll see what happens this evening.

I'm open to any recommendations you want to send my way.

Later everyone.  Keep in touch.

That sounds like a plan considering you platlate count.  However, just as a suggesion, you might want to look into another common regimine of Reyataz/Norvir/Truvada.  There are MANY posts about this combo.  Even though they are 3 different drugs, you take them only once a day and don't seem to have any side effects like those of Atripla.  It's only a suggestion and everyones reactions will vary.

Nonetheless, whatever deciscion you make, you have plenty of support through this great vehicle of forums.
Definitely post your reactions & effects (if any) and numbers.  We can all learn from each other.  And I'm sure I can speak for a great many of us on here, we're rooting for you!!

Someone posted an article on here awhile ago that explained these numbers better....but basically from what I remember....if you keep a CD4% between 21-25% you need to monitor your labs closely.   If your percentage drops below 21%...you should consider meds if not taking them already.  I read somewhere that its nice to have 25% or higher...the norm is between 30-60%.   You can have a great CD4 number but a low percentage...this can be bad for your immune system since you need all you can to fight any type infection.  Thats why the studies are saying thats its better to start treatment sooner when your CD4 levels drop below 500 (the percentages are more higher)...it decreases your chances of certain types of cancers that are more prone in HIV patients.

For me...I think the percentage is more important because it gives me a better understanding of what my immune status is.  I'd rather know the percentage of wbc's that are actually available to fight off infections.

Thanks for the information everyone.  Mike you address a good point.  I don't know my percentage but I need to inquire with my doc and get that number as well and determine the importance and how it's determined.  I should have my next results in a couple of weeks.

I went ahead and started the atripla regimine last night for 2 weeks as my ID doc and I discussed. In two weeks we will reevaluate with new bloodwork and discuss any side effects or if we need to change/readjust any meds.

Can anyone please tell me if side effects, if any would appear during the first dose ?  I see many different posts with varying degees of side effects, many stating that they subside after the first 2 weeks or so.
I took the first dose last night with no food  at 10:30 pm and didn't have any real side effects.  I got up once around 4am to go to the bathroom and felt slightly dizzy (I did when I went to sleep too)  When I got up at 5:45 AM, I still felt silghtly dizzy (kinda like a fuzzy head).  As soon as I ate breakfast, it all subsided and I felt fine for the rest of the day.

Is this normal or is everyone different ?  I was expecting the worst.

Hi Jayjax and Mikey

Welcome to the forums guys.  Don't know if you've had a chance to explore some of the other resources on the website, but the Lessons are a great resource and they are frequently updated.   Here's a link to the one on Tcell counts that explains percentages.

http://www.aidsmeds.com/articles/TCellTest_4727.shtml

And regarding Atripla side effects, most of the folks are worried about the central nervous system side effects (dreams and depression) that come from one of the drugs that goes into Atripla.  That drug is called Sustiva.

Here's links to the page talking about Atripla
http://www.aidsmeds.com/archive/Atripla_1577.shtml

and a link to a helpful page on Sustiva
http://www.aidsmeds.com/cn/printView.php?page=/articles/SustivaTips_7551.shtml&domain=www.aidsmeds.com

Look forward to hearing more from you guys.

  Luv,
Betty
I just want to thank everyone who has given me the support I need right now. You're all terrific. I attended my first HIV support group recently.  Wow!... I had a chance to let it all out with everyone experiencing the same fears, concerns and ambitions of being HIV+.

During this time of year, we have so much to be thankful for.  Thank you everyone again. Hope your Thanksgiving is very special.

Hello Jay,

Since you have just started taking meds, might I suggest that you stop reading or seeking side effects and rather go with the idea, that you will not have ANY side effects.  I have been poz for 24 years and so I know that drugs do have side effects, but why assume you will have them, until you actually experience something.  I believe that how you view your treatment, will have a direct effect on how successful that treatment will be.  I suggest you avoid the temptation, to categorize everything you experience, as a direct result of something else.  I am not suggesting you ignore any potential side effects of a drug or treatment, just that you stop anticipating something, that may never happen.  Like me, I assume you have other things to be concerned with and you just do not need the added stress that an active imagination can bring.

jayjax,
Welcome to the forums.  Sounds like you are off to a good start with meds, a doc, and atripla.

We each have our own way of adjusting to HIV.  There will be times when you are frustrated, depressed, lonely, and also times when you are happy and normal.  May the normal and happy outnumber the others.

If you have not done so, start looking for in-person social stuff.  Here in Houston we have a monthly poz social, other cities have similar gatherings.  There is a weekly HIV support group here as well.  We have a twice a year poz campout in Texas as well.

You may also wish to "clean house" so to speak.  There are a variety of behaviors that don't go so well with your new pet virus.  Some people take the opportunity to consider drinking less or not doing as many drugs.  Or becoming sober.  There are a variety of 12 step groups that focus on HIV and addiction.  One thing I can tell you is that it seems like people who drink heavily and do alot of drugs don't live as long as those who focus on eating right, exercising, and taking their meds.

I personally have used the experience to focus more on enjoying life.  I started working out regularly as it's now alot more important.  I eat a much healthier diet, as again it's much more important.  I put up with alot less nonsense, because I can.  I started seeing a therapist (which I recommend).  It's nice to have a neutral party to talk to that is confidential.

Your first year will have it's ups and downs.  Lord knows mine has.  However, I can tell you... it is possible to date, get laid, have friends, and enjoy life.  All that changes is you must be careful of your health, eat right, take meds, and be careful not to infect others.

Happy holidays!
Don't obsess over the wrong things.  Life isn't about your numbers, it isn't about this forum, it isn't about someone's opinion.  It's about getting out there and enjoying it.   I am a person with HIV - not the other way around.

JayJax, Because you are the one going through all of this then it is you that can make a difference in how you feel about it.  Sitting here from the outside your numbers look okay to me, but that information does nothing to soothe  your fears.  A mindfulness skill I have learned is to stay in the moment.  In the moment you have all your power at your disposal, living somewhere else in time will increase your fears and anxiety.
I just got my counts and my t-cells dropped from 405 to 232 that was movement in the wrong direction. I have a lot going on in my life right now so the drop isn't unusual.  My viral load or the amount of virus in my blood is >50 all very good news to me.  Another way to deal with this anxiety and stress is come here and find a listen ear.  Having support is as important as medicine in relaxing while at the same time kicking some virus behind.  Email me any time, tucsonpaolo@cox.net.

  JayJax,
After reading all of the other members' responses, I have little new to add except to say that it does get easier to deal with in time although you never truly stop worrying about what could happen in the future. I have been on Atripla for a year and a half now and have had extremely good results. The only drawback I have had is that I always feel as if I just woke up or am in some kind of stupor much of the time. I tink I've adjusted to that and now plan my activities so that I do them earlier in the day. Like many on here will tell you, your experience with it may be totally different. I tried not to expect any side effects from it so as not to have a preconceived notion but it's hard not developing some expectations. I don't really have a support group around here which I think could help but I do read alot on this forum and jump in once in a while although I'm pretty anonymous most of the time.
Good luck with everything and please keep us posted on how you're doing.

To Everyone !

Thanks for all the supporting words of encouragement. I've attended a local support group for the last 3 weeks now and helps tremendously, especially during this time of year.  We all need to be thankful for everything we have, and I constantly remind myself how thankful I am, even with the HIV diagnosis.

I've just had my second blood draw since testing positive.  I will let you know how the results go.  So far the Atripla has been a breeze, compared to some of the stories I've heard from the Old Timers.

Once again, Thanks everyone.

Hi all,
Just an update on my latest results.  Please feel free to post comments.

I just received my 3rd set of results last Thursday.
CD4:  109
VL:  5000
%:  18

My ID doc seems to think that my CD4 count is not correct because it does not coincide with any of the other bloodwork done.  My VL count is still down and my percentage is within the good range.  He says that there is no way my CD4 count could drop from 415 to 109 in 2.5 months.  And that it's quite possible that it's just a bad count from the lab.  He also said that it wasn't worth the money to be re-tested.  I haven't been sick or anything else.  He said for me not to worry and to come back in3 months as usual.
I feel great and my other vital signs are excellent.  So we'll see you in 3 months.

Just wanted to tell everyone the results of my first set of labs since starting Atripla.  I would appreciate any comments or suggestions from experienced or long term survivors.

I started Atripla on Nov 18, with VL = 7000 and CD4 =268.
I had my first set of labs done on Jan 28 with VL  =70 but my CD4 was 195 (I had to retake the CD4 blood test a second time).  Not sure what happened but I'm concerned why ny CD4 dropped. I'm feeling great and continue to work-out 4x a week. My ID doc prescribed me an antibiotic (Sulfameth/Trimethoprim) since the CD4 dropped and wants to be proactive in case any OIs are causing the drop in CD4.  He also advised that he didn't want me to get real concerned just yet about the cd4 since this was my first follow-up since starting Meds, and it might take more time.  ID Doc was very happy with the VL, which I am also.  I'm scheduled for my next set of lab work in 3 months.  we'll see what happens from there.

Last but not least, thanks to everyone for the fantastic support!  You're all great.  I would still be lost if I didn't find this site and all the great support.

Jayjax.

Hi Jayjax

Glad you are feeling well.  Sounds like you and your doc are pretty in sync too.

The CD 4 pattern in your results does appear unusual, but the CD4 number tends to vary a lot from test to test due to random measurement error.  (Two blood draws on the same day can give different results. ) The CD4 percentage tends to have less random variation in it -- you might start asking if you could see that result too.

The US CDC treatment guidelines suggest that a CD4 count change is significant if it changes by 30% or more.  So one way to look at your results might be that last time your CD4 was between 188 and 348 (268 plus or minus 30%) and this time it's between 137 and 253.

But the main thing is that your viral load is responding well to the Atripla.  Once the virus is no longer attacking your immune system, it can heal.  And its good you have a careful doctor who is putting you on Bactrim just in case.

Good luck

Hey Assurbanipal,

Thank you very much for the insight!  It's all starting to make more sense and you have explained it very well.

Kevin,

Your numbers are awesome. Good luck.

Everyone, I also want to let you ALL know how great of a guy Kevin, (jayjax) is. We have started Atripla on the same night and have been talking ever since. It definitely helps to talk to someone who is in the same boat as you!

A good support system is great (Kevin & Jon)....I'm glad you both have each other right now.  I wish you both luck with your next labs.  And Kevin...look at your percent CD4...its a good way to follow your levels because the CD4 can change so much while the percentage of CD4 may stay the same.  Thats the number I follow more compared to the CD4 level.  I'm glad you are much better...its been nice to follow your story.

Thanks for the kind words Jon!  It has been great to have someone in the "same boat", who I can relate to and have discussions, even the funny things that we face each day.  Mike and you have been very helpful in making the necessary changes in the journey of life.  Life would not be the same if I hadn't been chatting with you 2.

Keep in touch.

Tagman.

Thanks for the post.  You offer encouraging support to so many others in the forum.  Your posts are encouraging for anyone who reads them too !!!!

I definitely need to look at the percentages, rather than the actual numbers.  My ID doc was alluding to this, but we didn't go over percentages.  Moving forward, I need to discuss this number first and then CD4 counts -- I think we'll have a better baseline to follow as well.

Keep in touch.

Hi guys,
It's been awhile since I've replied or posted to anything.  But now I'm back with new and updated results:

Oct '07 - seroconverted
8/21/08 - tested positive
9/18/08 - CD4 - 329  21%  VL - 7000
11/13/08 - CD4 - 415  19%  VL - 5470
1/30/09 - CD4 - 109  18%  VL - 5000
2/12/09 - CD4 - 389  19%  VL - 5500 (re-tested)
4/15/09 - CD4 - 365  19%  VL - 18,320  (due to slight infection)

Overall, I feel ok.  but for last 2 months I've been having the feeling of the first signs of a cold, but never develops into anything.  I can tell it in the back of my throat and I have a funny taste in my mouth.
Any ideas?  And no comments from the peanut gallery.

Everyone!!!!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone here.  Got my latest labs back and my VL is now undetectable since starting Atripla on Nov 18, 2008.  My CD4 improved slightly -- 201 but I feel great.  With time, hopefully this will keep improving.

I just started new ID doctor today.  I had to switch because of HMO insurance.  Did bloodwork, I should know results by next Friday.  I will post as soon as I find out.

Speaking of posting, how do you post your stats at the bottom of each reply?
anyone can chime in on this. thanks in advance for the help.

Congrats jayjax!!!
ps.  I'm doing good.  still crazy busy with work.  but definitely looking forward to 3-day weekend.  ;)

I tested positive on May 1st, each day gets a little better, I am not sure about the therapy thing, A number of my friends and family want me to get into therapy including my wife. I've always been the type to resolve things on my own. But I am having a most difficult time with resolving this in my head. I only cried twice this week. I'm trying to keep busy, but it doesn't always help. My best friend doesn't like to talk about it (I"m assuming) he keeps changing the subject. He has not been around much during this time. I don't really have anyone to turn to I don't have many close friends. I've always been a loner for the most part. I go back and forth on whether to end it, or to keep going my number are cd4 298 viral load >20. I'll be beginning meds at my next appt June 18th. I"m terrrified of the prospect. I am lost and don't know what to do

CHUCK - I noticed your post in another thread. Now here. Only 3 posts so far.  Do you know how to open your own topic thread.  Sounds like you could really use some SUPPORT and this community might not pick up on your reach out if you don't make it clear.

Its terrible what happened.  And your wife's tests come in this week?  Keep us posted.

Do not feal alone, and do not "end it" -

Please know that there is a silver lining - your doc will take care of your HIV.  Your numbers aren't bad at all.  Let's see whats up with your wife.   Please check in everyday and let us know your thoughts and please open your own TOPIC so we can support you directly, without a hijack!

Hello, Chuck. Welcome.

First of all, and I really do mean this literally, please take a nice deep and slow breath in and out and then do it again. And remember to do that whenever  you find yourself feeling confused and anxious or whatever. It really will help. I promise.

Now, this change in your life is very, very new so you have to give yourself some time to get with it. Even though it may feel daunting and even overwhelming right now, I can also promise you that with time and some appropriate support you will find that life is going on. And that life is still going to be good.

You do need to have a doctor who is regularly going to monitor your numbers and with whom you can form a good working partnership to keep you healthy. Gradually you are going to learn everything you need to know to stay healthy.

This is not something for you to try to do alone. Isolation is not good. So you're going to have make some effort to reach out to others. I don't know where you are writing from, but if there is an AIDS service organization in your area they will likely have or be able to put you in touch with support groups and people who will appreciate where you are at right now.

You're always welcome to come here with questions or to talk about anything that's on your mind. From the responses you've had you can see there is a wealth of information and support here from members both gay and straight. Each of them has gone through some variation of what you are experiencing now.

So keep coming back here. We're open 24/7.

Keep breathing and gradually things will settle into place.

And again, welcome.

Well, THAT time has come.  I just received new numbers and they have changed dramatically enough that my doctor is gonna put me on meds.  I'm not sure what caused my numbers to change so drastically, but I guess in a good way, but going on meds, things can only get better from here.  It was bound to happen sooner or later.  I was just hoping that it would happen later.

Any suggestions from those of you on meds as to what I should be taking?  My doc says I have a 'wild' virus so I can take anything that's out there.  But any help, info and words of wisdom would be great.

Mike,

I'm sorry to hear your new numbers.  You've been with me and providing me the encouragement since my first day.... I still remember when I reached out here on this thread --- It was you who jumped out and kept me going last November.

Although this is a life long change, take a deep breath and realize the outcome will be best for you.  I know, once you start your meds, you will start to feel better as time goes by.

I'll keep you in my prayers. You know I'm always here if you need to talk -- We all are !!!!!!

Thanks JayJax,

I'm not quite sure what happened to my numbers.  But I think in a good way, that going on meds will only make my life more livable.  I'm going to call my doctor first thing in the morning to see if he can just call in my prescription so I can get started right away, instead of waiting 3 weeks.

From what I've been reading on here, those of you who are on Atripla seem to be having great success with it.  I'm just hoping I'm in the higher percentage that don't have any problems with it.

Again, anyone with help, info or suggestions would be most welcome.

Mike,
I say Atripla if its right for you. One pill, Once a day. Most of the side effects are minimal from what most of us have experienced, but everyone's body is different.  If you do have major problems then you may need to switch to something different. I would recommend going with your dr's advice and watch for anything out of the ordinary for the first couple of weeks.

I'm pryaing for you buddy!!!

Keep in touch.  I'll check up on you later.

wow, I've officially become completely overwhelmed and have information overload.
how does one keep track with all the information out there on which drugs are which?

I don't see my ID doctor until June 21 and I'm beginning to stress out a little bit  I know, it's not good for my system, but I can't help it.  So many options out there, I just hope he makes the right one for me.

I just want to get started soon so I can start to get my health and numbers back on track.

Thanks to all of you (especially JayJax) for your help, info and support.

So I see my ID doc today and he is starting me on Truvada/Sustiva combo.  Not sure why the combo instead of Atripla.  Maybe because 2 smaller pills are easier to take than 1 (MUTHA PHUKIN) huge horse pill.

He wants me to start this weekend.  Is there anyone who has been on this combo?  Any side effects I should be concerned about that would keep me from starting tonight, instead?  I mean, what difference does it make if I start them tonight or start them on the weekend?

Any help or info would be great.
Thanks
mikey  :)
