The Cost of Sperm Washing?
« on: September 06, 2007, 12:17:03 am »
My husband is positive and I am negative, we have been looking around for the cost of having that procedure done; his HIV doctor with the veteran's affairs has not been helpful saying that she did not have anyone to recommend. Online, we have not found any site that lists the exact amount. What I would like to know is its exact cost and how much of it would be, if it is possible, deductible from insurance.

Anyone who has been through this please comment....what we are looking to do is the basic washing with self insemination. We're hoping to start a family soon. :)

Also if you have a recommendation or place that you know of that are willing to do it, that would be beneficial. The closer to the state of SC the better for us, thank you.

Hi Susan

First of all welcome to the forums, i'm afraid i don't know much about this , but I did find this on the web.

Will Medical Insurance Cover the Procedure?

Unfortunately, most often insurances do not pay for sperm washing. In addition, the procedure is a costly one; some put the cost at more than $10,000 US. However, the fertility specialist performing the procedure may have ways for you to finance and pay for the procedure. Exact costs and insurance coverage can vary so check with your insurance provider and your physician for more information.

I found an e-mail address and phone mumber that may be able to help you

E-Mail...lab@bedfordresearch.org.

Phone...617 623 7447.

It's in Bedford MA, I have no idea where that is (I live in New Zealand) but it's possible they would be able to give you some answers to your questions..sorry I can't be of more help to you.

Hope to hear more from you.

Hugs
Jan

Keep us posted on how you're doing with this, please.

There's been a lot of success in accomplishing this with an HIV negative baby from a negative mom and positive dad.

What you want to accomplish is worth keeping on even when you feel discouraged.

Cheers,

I was quoted at least $15k from a clinic in New York, I'll see if I can find the info they sent me.

If it does cost the amounts mentioned above, it's saddening. If not for my partner's veteran status, we'd be in trouble with the costs of living positive. I was actually hoping for something around the one thousand dollar range. haha, foolish am I. One thing I don't understand is why he isn't pro-active in finding out information...perhaps he doesn't want a reality check.....:(

Hey Susan,

He may not be as proactive because it hurts.  I knew that though I was gay, I had the option of finding a surrogate but now that I'm positive, that's out.  I know that sperm washing has been going on but its still one of those things that I'm not totally comfortable with yet.  I don't want to infect a woman for the sake of me having a child.  Its been a hard decision for me since I live in Texas and they frown on gay adoption.

Maybe you two should sit down and have a good long talk or a couple of them.

I'll keep you in my thoughts.  Good luck.
