Title: Should I call my doc...or even worry?
Post by: otherplaces on October 10, 2006, 09:41:50 pm

I just need to bounce this off you guys.

Started Atripla two months ago.

I've had a slight discomfort in my right side for the past week.  It's nothing really except that I notice it and wonder what it might be.  It seems to move around a little.  Sometimes my right side below my rib cage.  Sometimes my right side above my hip. It almost feels like a tightness.  It is not painful.

This is the thing...like 3 weeks ago I hurt my back pretty good.  Lower back, right side. I had to stop working out.  I couldn't run.  Walking was doable but kind of a pain if I had to walk far.  This lasted a good two weeks and as it subsided it seemed to move around into my lower buttox.  When that disappeared is when the discomfort in the right side appeared.  Could this just be related to my pulled muscles?  A friend told me the back muscles attach to your abdomen muscles. A month ago my liver and kiney tests were normal.  I see my doc again in a month.

You think I should call and bug my doc about this?

thanks for your help,
brian

The spine carries nerve impules to the brain. The spine is in your back ;) If you are getting sensations and you have recently injurred your back, it cannot hurt to have it looked over. Your appendix is on the front right side of your abdomen, generally just below the waistband of your pants. If it was bothering you, you would likely find the area sensitive to touch. I know health care isn't cheap for your southern folks, but if your condition isn't improving, I'd recommend at least a visit to a clinic to determine what the next action should be.

Hello Brian, it is Eldon.

It is possible for this to be a reaction from your Back Injury. If the problem persits, please DO by all means check with your Doctor and have this looked over to see if there is anything out of the ordinary.

Make the BEST of each Day!

HI Brian,
I agree with the above.  The thing is you know your body the best and if you think you should get it looked at than thats what you should do.  I hope you feel better soon.  Lots of Love Rachel

Hi Brian,

Actually, the spleen is on the LEFT side of the abdomen. The LIVER is on the right.

It sounds to me like your discomfort is probably related to your back injury. Try some gentle stretching exercises for a couple days and if there is no improvement or your discomfort gets worse, then yes, get in contact with your doctor.

As there are no pain nerves in the liver, your liver generally needs to be fairly upset before it will cause discomfort. It's usually enlargement of the liver that causes discomfort and it is nerve endings in the area surrounding the liver that produce the discomfort, not the liver itself. This usually happens if the liver is enlarged. As your liver enzymes were normal the last time you were checked, it's unlikely that your liver is involved in your discomfort. But, as I said, if some gentle exercise doesn't help, it's time to get checked out.

Good luck Brian, hope you feel better soon.

Thank you all.

I really can't decide whether this could be a muscle or not.  I keep going back and forth. It feels so nebulous.  That sure would be a drag if it was my liver.

So I just called and left a message for my doc to call me.  He can decide if he wants to see me or not.

So I talked to my doc.  He said it sounds more like muscle spasms to him.  He said my liver test was fine and he wouldn't think it's my liver.  I told him if he's not worried I'm not going to worry.  And really I was thrilled I didn't have to go see him.

Thanks for all your thoughts.

Get someone to press on the right and left side of your abdomen (where the pain is) GENTLY. My Dr. does that in every appointment to see if there is anything swollen and asks me if I feel any pain. I there is no pain when gentle pressure is applied, you should not worry.

Juan,

There is no pain.  It just feels tight.  I've pushed on my side and it does not hurt.  I imagine it's going to be fine.  I just wanted to make sure.

thanks,
brian
