unprotected
« on: October 22, 2007, 11:41:54 am »
Hi,

About two months ago I did a really stupid thing and had unprotected vaginal sex with a friend/coworker (he did not cum in me).  About 7 weeks later I got really sick.  First I was throwing up, then I had what I thought was a UTI, so I drank a lot of cranberry juice, and then I had diarrhea for about 3 days.  I don't think I ever had a fever, although I did have chills.  I went to the doctor and they couldn't find anything wrong with me, not even a UTI (I'm pretty sure the cranberry squashed that before I ever made it to the doctor.)  I'm really worried and plan to get tested, but I'm pretty scared about it.  What are your thoughts?

Dumb,

Forget about the symptoms - symptoms or even the lack of symptoms will never tell you your hiv status. ONLY testing will reliably reveal your hiv status.

While only a three month test will be conclusive where a negative result is concerned, the vast majority of people who have actually been infected will seroconvert and test positive by the six week mark. A six week negative must be confirmed at three months.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex with a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

Anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Only testing will reveal your hiv status - and you do indeed need to be tested.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

Does the fact that he pulled out lower the chances at all?

dumb,

Pulling out does not equal protection against hiv. You need to test.

Hi again,

So I got tested today (2 months) and the test is negative.  I will get test again at 3 months, but how likely is it that the test would change?  Sorry for the silly questions. I feel much better, but still am a little nervous.

Thanks!

Dumby,

Your 2 month negative result is an excellent indicator that you will test negative at 3 months.

I mean excellent. All but conclusive.

But to get that conclusive result you still need to test at the 3 month mark.
