Oi! I think I've Got Thrush!
« on: October 14, 2009, 12:38:51 am »
Went to brush my teeth and I've got white patches down the side of my tongue!  Could this be my first official OI?  I'm feeling very AIDS-y all of a sudden. :(

I would certainly get checked out by your ID doctor but even if it is thrush it doesn't necessarily mean it is due to your status.  There are multiple causes of thrush (recent antibiotic use, upper respiratory infections, dry mouth, etc etc) that have nothing to do with HIV so try to relax until you get the official word.

Yeah, it could be thrush, but the only one to diagnose that is your doc.  It's pretty easily treatable, it's just very annoying.  See your doc, and good luck.

It may also be OHL (Oral Hairy Leukoplakia) which is a manifestation of the Epstein Barr Virus (Glandular Fever).  It was my very first OI way back when I started to get sick, and was on the sides of my tongue, where it manifests first.  Thrush usually appears in the middle or back first and is easily scraped off with a toothbrush.  OHL won't rub off very easily.  It will go away when counts go up, and it's harmless.

But definitely get your HIV Dr to diagnose it.  I thought I had thrush at first but it was OHL, the thrush came after.. and was pretty feral when it gets in your airways also.

Yeah, I was going to say OHL too.   Neither one is very much fun.  Go to the ID doc and get it treated asap.

Oral Hairy Leukoplakia it is according to my doc.  Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, I'm told.

Sorry to hear about the OHL, Northernguy.  Does this have any impact on whether you or your doctor think you should start meds?

I think oral hairy anything sounds disconcerting.   It feels worse.  Best of luck.  Hugs.  It will go away soon.

Not to worry Northernguy.

It will come and go, but when your counts are high it should seldom appear.  I get it very rarely and only in tiny, tiny patches that are hardly noticeable, but when I was really sick, it was pretty bad.

Brushing it off with a toothbrush doesn't really work, just leave it be is the best thing, it will go away on its own.  You can take acyclovir for it, but it doesn't really help much.  Your immune system will get rid of it when it can.

Cheers
Matt

I had thrush for the first time this year. It was kind of painful, like my whole mouth had a sunburn. I used the cloches and it went away really fast.

If you are feeling "aidsy", why don't you start HAART?
