Please help to access my risk
« on: October 03, 2011, 08:52:09 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've been browsing this forum for quite some time already, but there is a kind of fear or anxiety inside me due to the fact that I had a sexual encounter roughly 2-3 weeks ago and I'm experiencing some symptoms recently. I'm wondering if this symptoms correspond to the effects caused by seroconversion.

about 2-3 weeks ago, I had an encounter with a CSW, there were 2 episodes of oral sex and penetrative vaginal sex. Condoms were used for the vaginal sex. During the first episode, the condom kinda slipped, but the penis head was still covered. She then removed the condom and asked me to wash it briefly before giving me a long blowjob(unprotected) and handjob.

During the second episode of the vaginal sex in that same encounter(after she gave me another unprotected blowjob), she helped me to put on a second new condom and started having vaginal sex again. This time, she grinded quite hard, and after the session, I noticed there's abrasion on the shaft of my penis(although there's no bleeding), and my penis head was quite sore. I also noticed there's some vaginal blood on the tip of condom(the part where it is covering the penis head) when I removed it, and that was when I accidentally touched that blood with my fingers when I removed the condom.

So after this encounter, I started to experience some symptoms a few days ago such as fever, diarrhoea, nausea and joint and muscle pain. In fact, yesterday, my face was as pale as a sheet of paper when I woke up and I almost fainted right after waking up from bed. I went to see a doctor and he told me I got a viral infection, and gave me some medication. Right now, most of the symptoms were gone except for my persistent fever and diarrhoea.

I'll need your input and advice on my situation, to see if I'm actually at risk in contacting HIV. As far as I'm concerned, my own body's immune system ain't that strong/resistent in particular, and I'm afraid the symptoms I've experienced might be seroconversion, since seroconversion usually happend 2-4 weeks after exposure. Thank you.

Thanks for being so detailed. That helps me to say with confidence that nothing you are reporting put you at risk for HIV. You used condoms for intercourse. Whatever the details of the situation, they provide very effective protection. Nothing else that you reported put you at risk.

If you are having physical concerns, discuss them with your doctor. They have nothing to do with HIV.

We do advise anyone who is sexually active to at least once a year have a full STD panel done. Other STDs are much easier to acquire than HIV. But as far as HIV is concerned I don't see any cause for concern this time.

Thanks for your comments Andy. That reassured me quite a bit somehow.

I'll also get myself tested around the week 13 period as well just to play it safe.

OK. For you getting tested is strictly for your peace of mind since you did not have a risk. A negative result is a certainty.

Nitro,

Condoms have been proven to prevent hiv infection. As saliva is not infectious, getting a blowjob is not a risk for hiv infection.

I agree with Andy that testing over this situation is purely for your peace of mind. However, as a sexually active adult, you should be having a full sexual health check-up at least once a year.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST SPECIFICALLY OVER PROTECTED INTERCOURSE OR BLOWJOBS, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!
