Age or AIDS, I can identify with this!

Yep, I think anyone who keeps a stock of Imodium on hand (liquid is best) can understand this.

Barbara please!  I get a monthly prescription of loperamide every month -- 180 2mg capsules, plus  180 capsules of MS-8 Pancrecarb :)

My bowel movements are fairly perfect and compact with this intervention, and it's taken me a decade to arrive at the right technique.

I remember the days of wasting when I had to wear Depends (and was incontinent for awhile).  That's no fun.  Love the picture.

If we are talking urine then I'm fine ... as long as I don't laugh, sneeze, cough, jump or try to run, I've been know to go through a few pairs of knickers in one day..but panty pads helped alot.. ;D..everything else is just fine.

Just another one of those "'getting old" issues we have to put up with Mark~~~sigh.

Same here, I've been on loperamide for the last 5 yrs. 180-2mg caps twice a day, but only one capsule at night when i go to bed, seems to work well for me, I have a bowel movement everyday, but sometimes it's kinda watery, I did try the twice a day loperamide, but that makes me VERY constipated  ???

Mark, I don't worry to much, unless I'm more than 20 minutes away from the restroom after eating and then I begin to worry. Nice thing about it. You don't have to spend much time in the restroom.  ;) Imodium, can't do that stuff. I would end of in the ER with them using a jack hammer on my ass.

Imodium works, it does the job for me, but, it isn't a cure-all, if I'm stressed-out, upset, are worried about something, it go's str8 to my stomach, and I have to run to a restroom anywhere i can find one (if I'm out of the house somewhere)  ???

After a dozen years on meds and more than 40 years an undiagnosed celiac, I've been there and done that.

Increased fiber, adding yogurt to the diet after user of antibiotics, etc. Done them all.

When it comes to having an all out case of the hersheys, the only thing that works is Imodium or some other chemical intervention - or a large cork.

I take Imodium (Loperamide) and I'm up to 2 a day, one a day just didn't stop the runs anymore, this gets a lot worse, if I'm stressed-out, but at least I can take one every six hrs. to stop the water-boo boos  ??? I'm getting real tired of washing out all my underwear, due to them dam accidents............did anyone say it's time for some Depends adult diapers  ;D

Well,

speaking of the hersheys,

I'm doing a lot better. I have adjusted some thought processes.

*20 minutes after meds and eating, there will be farting

*the farting urge is not a guarantee that it is just air

*think* when bending over or leaning (such as in making the bed) and then run....to the toilet (Katie has learned that when in an activity as the urge hits, she can turn in mid sentence and I will be gone. She now knows why....."??..oh, you're on the toilet....??....did you make it?  do you need me to bring you some fresh undies?" ::)

Gosh, what a fun topic.

Part of my introduction to Texas was a sign over the aisle in the local drug store.  You know, "Allergies," "Vitamins," etc. -- this sign read "Incontinents."

I would like to purchase one incontinent, please, if he's cute.

I've had the runs for about 10 yrs. now ,and I'm used to it, and I know that it's part of my AIDS diagnosis, it's the reason why I'm on SSDI and can no longer work, so, I accept this little problem and have learned to live with this ???

Hey Den,

I was lucky. When I was diagnosed as gluten intolerant and changed my diet, the squirts really slowed down for me.

Now, its usually just a few times a month. Of course, I never know when that will happen, but, that's life.

Hey Lipo, I thought Asia was now the "in" continent. Antarctica sounds like fun though. Lots of cuddling.

HUGS,

Mark

I've had the squirts for about 10 to 15 yrs. (since the beginning of the PI MEDS) and no matter what I take for them, they never really slowed down for me, they stop completely if I'm taken off the PI's , but, without the PI's I'd be sick in a very short period of time, and then DEAD there-after  ???

In that case, I would opt for the squirts, as you have. The PIs are a bit kinder to me, although Norvir does like to cause gas.

Glad you are still hanging in there.

I've had problems with severe dire-rear for the past six/seven years - starting about five years into my infection. I can't take loperamide - it makes me nauseous for some reason. I stuck with it for a while, hoping that side-effect would go away or lessen in time, but it only got worse, to the point where I'd gag just putting it in my mouth.

So, I use dihydrocodeine instead. I've been on the same dosage - 120 mgs per day - for five years now. I have to take regular one or two day breaks from it so my tolerance level doesn't increase. I really don't want to have to take more than I already am. I have to make sure I take my breaks when I don't need to leave house or do anything. Along with the squirts, I get gut-wrenching intestinal cramping. If feels like someone has their hand in there, twisting and squeezing. Not nice!

About twice a year I take an extended break (five to ten days, depending on how long I can tolerate feeling... well... shitty), to make sure the gut problems I get when taking my short breaks aren't just withdrawal symptoms. So far, that hasn't been the case. I get hardly any withdrawal symptoms (surprisingly), I just feel a bit antsy for a day or two and a little achy in my arms and legs, and that's it.

I've been tested for every intestinal bug imaginable, I've altered my diet, tried prescription peppermint-based stuff used for IBS and nothing has worked, other than the codeine. I've discussed pancreacarb with my doc, but never got anywhere with that. (I must remember to ask again at my next appointment.) I'd really rather not take codeine - it interfers with my sexual response for around eight hours after I take it.

I've also had to deal with some docs assuming I just wanna have fun - and all the "you junky" stigma that goes along with it. Thankfully, I now get it prescribed for me by my GP instead of my hiv clinic, where I often end up seeing doctors I don't know as it is a teaching hospital. It's being prescribed "off-label" and that doesn't help either when dealing with a doctor who doesn't know me.

It's just the hiv causing this for me as I'm not on ARVs yet. Interestingly, after I took Foxtrot Charlie's meds one night, I was able to not take any codeine for the following three days, with NO dire-rear or cramping at all. I've always been wary of starting meds because I worry that they'll increase my gut problems, but maybe they'll help. This is something else I want to discuss at my next appointment. I'll probably get told off for taking Charlie's meds, but ... ~shrug~

Ann, Thanks what an interesting Post, I feel the same way, and the loperamide  is giving me a lotta skin rashes, also it makes my feel dizzy ( if i take too much) I see my ID Doctor in 2 weeks, and I'm gonna ask about the pancreacarb, and see just what she had to say about it, and all my IBS problems I had for yrs.
like you I do understand that most of problems is caused by this damm AIDS, also, my Meds ( the PI's) have a lot to do with all of this , I hope you can get a handle on this when you see your doctor  ???

Slacker.  Intestinal cramping and flatulence is really addressed by Pancrecarb.

You know, we're probably alike in that I think much of my GI issues are the HIV infection itself simply because I have it way worse than almost anyone I read about on here.  Once you go on meds it will (I'm afraid to say) most likely only get worse, so it's really to your advantage to sort it out somewhat now or you'll really be miserable.

It may not be available in the UK as as it's not in Canada though maybe that link is outdated.

Philly, the problem was that the doc I spoke to (several times) about the pancrecarb never heard of it before. He wasn't my regular hiv doc (the reknown Wizard of Poz) - he was an intern. He promised to follow up on it with the Wiz, who happened to be off at some conference or other, being brilliant, the times I asked. I'm not sure if the intern is even still with the hospital or if he's moved on, as they tend to do right after you've gotten them broken in nicely. He did seem very interested in it though. I told him all  about you. ;D

My next clinic appointment is November 4th and pancrecarb is already written down in my little book to remind me to ask. I'll come back here (hopefully I'll remember!) and let you know what's what.

I certainly can relate because this has always been the most debilitating, challenging, life altering aspect of my HIV infection.

Hey Lipo, I thought Asia was now the "in" continent. Antarctica sounds like fun though. Lots of cuddling.

Well, I'll have to give Asia a try.  Antarctica was fun, but the cuddling was with penguins, and they tend to get needy and possessive.  And then they try to steal your egg.  And then the rumours start, you know, about you being a bird-eating mammal.  I mean, do I look like a leopard seal?  And then when you do have the occasional problem with diarrhea, they interpret it either as a territorial challenge or as a mating thing.

Maybe I was in the wrong area.

BTW, I do not actually look like my icon.  Just thought I'd clear that up.
