I am finding it very boring.  Perhaps just spoiled by china.  Although, they had slave labor.  I didn't get the huge baby and the house dance routine went on too long.  So far, we are not impressed.

Yeah, Beijing's opening ceremony was better. This one wasn't so bad, but not so impressive. It was too... pop. I liked Rowan Atkinson's performance, though. A true genius.

I hope the ceremony in Rio does better.

We all found ourselves talking and turning away from the TV.  Not that great.  We all thought Paul McCartney was singing off, tonight.  We all did like the boat with the torch.  And, we liked the lighting of the cauldron, representing all countries.  That was nice.

But, we were confused by where the cauldron will be.  Surely, they are not keeping it in the stadium.  I mean, that has to put off a lot of heat, and the runners will be scorched.  Plus, it is suppose to be in a prominent place, where it can be seen by all.  That was odd.  We thought they were going to light another cauldron outside.

I give it a C.

Well where do I begin.
Unlike the previous underwhelmed commentators I who sat down with a sense off impending dread ended up with a smile on my face and sense that Danny Boyle and team made a very good job off presenting a potted history off Britain and celebrated whatever Being British is. Also it was Funny. And featured Dogs.

But the best bit and one that I am surprised has not yet been commented on it celebrated our health system , , the NHS . Which is a first for I believe for Opening events.

I also love the fact that the whole thing was preformed by volunteers.
Yes it was very Pop , the music directors preform as Underworld , but I loved the fact it was very very Pop.

And it celebrated our health system sending a message to our penny pinching politicians .
And it was defiantly not concocted by committee , but by individuals and then preformed by volunteers , which is very pleasing to me.
So to my surprise I enjoyed it , thought it looked great , presented Britain in a manner that did not make me cringe, and was Funny.
Michael

Apparently it cost £45m less than the Peking wonderful OC

I thought that was awesome. Making the health and welfare of its citizens a priority is definitely something of which the U.K. can be proud.

Hi!

Great comments everyone....thanks!

Theyer...yes.....lots of people here in the UK dont appreciate the NHS......but I wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for their care.Big ups  NHS!

I owe them so much.

I Lol read  your comment on Underworld..Loved it."Born slippy"...makes me feel old (Im 39!!!!)....I've got such good memories of that song in the nineties!!!!!!!!

tednlou2....I liked the Mary Poppins and Voldermort from Harry Potter segments.....im just a big kid at heart! I still  love Dizzee Rascal..East end boy made good....although  I appreciate not everyone likes "Grime".

Yes....re  Paul Mc Cartney....he was so great in his heyday....but both last night and his performance at The  Jubilee.....not so good!

Loved "Becks" on the boat...and  Daniel Craig and  the  Queen!  .Rowan Atkinson is just so silly you cant help but smile when you see his face!

Still liked the  Bejiing Opening Ceremony and the  Sydney 2000 Olympic season as  I was living out  in Australia........backpacker stylee at  Bondi beach then !!!!!!!!!

Anyway....here's to a great 2 weeks....there's something to interest everyone, whether it be athletics, swimming , sailing , boxing or.......something else....enjoy!

Yes, thinking about it, you can say it wasn't grand, but it was a very humble presentation of a modern Britain to be proud of. A country that tries to provide for its citizens and has an open mind. Maybe many of you didn't notice, but two girls kissing made an appearance at the ceremony. Considering it was probably shown in countries in which homosexuality is still a crime, I think that was a great punch in the face.

I had no idea that NBC edited out the tribute to the victims of the 7/7 attacks, which occurred right after London was awarded the games.  In it's place, they ran an interview Ryan Seacrest did with Phelps.  NBC Sports said in a statement that they cater to an American audience.  Boy, we would have been pissed, if a tribute to Americans was edited out.

It does not surprise me  most Euro,s who have spent time in USA realise that main stream media is not intersted in life outside its boarders unless its a huge disaster or jokey piece to confirm stereotypes. And to a large degree our , UK, tabloids are similar.

That said, there is a movement on to have pole dancing added as an event...

I'm figuring that a lot of the Miami mamas will be at the Olympic trials for that event...

Wrestling on now - my old college roommate wrestled in the Olympics back in 92...(I think that was the year)... and Bruce Baumgartner (who is Athletic Director at my college alma mater) was a three time medalist at the Olympics --- we were a division 1 wrestling school and I basically hung out with all of the wrestlers --  ::)

I cant believe The  Olympics are over already.

Not really quite over yet - we still have the London 2012 Paralympics yet to come starting on August 29th. I don't know about you, but I'm really looking forward to these games.

C4 has been running individual stories of some of the athletes taking part and they are truly inspirational stories and people. I hope they have a lot of support - I know I'll be watching and supporting and I hope other people here will too.
