Movies and more movies.....
« on: September 29, 2007, 07:51:54 pm »
You all know how I love my movies so I thought I would start this thread...

I don't know if any of you have ever seen Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett in it but it is one of my favorite movies. I have been seeing the commercial to the sequel Elizabeth, The Golden Years is due to come out. From the looks of it, it looks like it will be just as good as the first one. I am curious to see if they will pick it up where Elizabeth left off. I was just watching Elizabeth today and wonders how the storyline will go with Robert, who she didn't have killed in the first one....

Am also curious about Resident Evil Extinction, has anyone seen it yet? I have read the online reviews. Being the gamer that I am I have the previous movies but has heard that it really doesn't follow the game much except for bringing in one of the characters, Albert Wesker. I see from the trailer that a few of the characters from Apocalypse is in it like Carlos and LJ (the black dude) but am curious to know what happened to Jill Valentine or the little girl Angela. Hates when sequels doesn't pick up where they left off.

And now there is a Saw 4. I am wondering how this is going to go since dude was killed in the last one. I think I remember the girl was too but now there is a tape? I liked Saw 3 because they connected all of the movies and explained things but am wondering if they are just stretching it a bit far this time.

Iggy, my movie criticc, where are you? Get from under Jeromy and let me know what you think.... ;D

Not too long ago, I saw the new Rob Zombie's "Halloween."  I fell asleep, so I guess it wasn't all that great.  (I can't believe I fell asleep in a movie theatre with all that loud surround sound).

I think I was one of the few who actually liked Rob's version of Halloween....I guess I am a bit biased since we share the same bday. But loved The Devil's Rejects, has to watch The House of a 1,000 Corpses again since I was told it was the prequel to Rejects..

Thanks for the link but it was more of a tease than anything. It looks like Clive Owen is her new love interest, poor Robert...But it does look like it will not disappoint....

Since they seem to be into doing remakes or sequels, I would love to see someone do Freddy vs Jason Part 2. The first one was really lame but would like to see someone make horror movies like they use to be. With plenty of gory scenes. I wonder who they would get to play Freddy because Robert Englund is getting up there in age.

Iggy, my movie criticc, where are you? Get from under Jeromy and let me know what you think.... ;D

:D

Ahem, Per your request...Your movie critic reports for duty, your majesty.

I did see the original Queen and loved it and have nothing but great expectations for this one as well.

As for Resident Evil Extinction...Let us pray that the title is a promise.   There were some great nods to the first film and the zombies (makeup effects) are better than the last one, but I was definitely disappointed.  The action is decent and there is a OK Mad Max vibe in the film, but they sort of didn't show anything new.  The whole devastated Las Vegas thing only happens for a little part of the movie and is kinda just "eh"   The best scene was the undead raven/crow attacks. In my opinion, I would wait for it on netflix.

As for Saw 4 - Yes, Jigsaw is back and I await it as well, though honestly am growing tired of the series.  I do anxiously await 30 Days of Night

Ah, there goes my Iggy....Well, yours truly had to pay 5 bucks for a bootleg of Resident Evil Extinction. There was a disappointment for me too. My beef was what happened to Angela, the little girl from Part 2 and what happened to Jill Valentine?

From the gamer's point of view and being a fan of the game, there was some things that I did like about it. The crows, the doctor changing into the monster and the introduction of Albert Wesker. I even liked the computerized little girl. The dogs are always a bonus. There will be another one, of course, I'm not sure where they can go with the storyline now but will be curious to see what they bring in from the game this time. I will buy the dvd because I have the other 2 and must complete the set.

Iggy, I also want to see 30 days of Night too.

As far as another sequel:

"During an interview with B-D to promote her upcoming film Resident Evil: Extinction, star Milla Jovovich revealed that this will be in fact her final appearance as Alice in the franchise. She also noted that there are talks about doing a spin-off with Ali Larter's character, Claire Redfield. Larter also told us "I love playing her, and having red hair..." she said she'd 100 percent reprise the role if asked "

Hmmm, well that is funny that Milla would say that considering how the movie ended. Ok, so Ali was Claire Redfield, another character from the game. I could see her taking over the main role sometime in the future. But then would they go back to the game and bring some dude in to play Claire's brother Chris? Ok, let me get this right, in the game Chris came back in Resident Evil 4. And since they killed off Carlos that would make room for another male lead. Now who would they get to play Chris and would the storyline jump to Resident Evil 4 the game since the US is pretty much wiped out? Exit zombies, enter Las Plagas?

I hope they take the movie to Tokyo as the ending suggested.

Originally they were shooting two sequels at the same time (Resident Evil Extinction + another) but decided to end the series with just the Extinction film.

The box office pull has been poor with this last one trailing Apocalypse in both receipts (adjusted dollars) and second weekend box office drop (Extinction had a 67% drop) so it may be time to call it quits on the series as the ending of this last one implies a sort of "solution" to the zombie crisis.

Frankly as far as zombies go, I'm expecting a better bang for my buck out of the straight to video Flight of the Living Dead

I dunno about the movie with the zombies on the plane, Iggy. I can't wrap my head around that one. First off, you're in a plane? Um, where to run? Kinda puts me in the mind of Snakes on a Plane, hated it. And if everyone is getting munched on who is going to fly the damn plane? Um, wait, maybe they will do like Snakes on a Plane and find someone who has experience through a freaking video game.....Ugh...Or let me guess, they'll be this kick ass female like Milla who saves the day....As much as I love my zombie movies, I'm just not feeling this one. Please tell me George Romero is not connected with this movie......

It kind of looks like "300" Part 2 (did you ever see that one?) but it still looks good.  I'm a sucker for sword-and-sandal genre flicks.

yes...Elizabeth...that should be good... I loved the first movie as well, lots of accuracy from real historical events and they blended the fiction very well.  I can't wait for Golden Age...(although as a descendant of the Spaniards this is a sad time in history for my ancestors....Elizabeth defeats the Spanish Armada and England takes place as the number 1 superpower in the world...the end of Spanish world domination...the good thing is that this is how those yummy black Irish came to exist)...anyway.....that should be an excellent movie.

Beowulf also sounds like a good movie, lets wait an see.

Honestly, I can't remember the last time I was at the movies either. But now that I wear hearing aids, it would be difficult to go. I usually go the bootleg route and if I like it then I buy the dvd when it comes out.

I haven't gone to the movies since "300" came out, but at least I went on opening day :)

One thing I hate about Philadelphia is that there's not any movies right downtown which is where I live and generally find myself going.  I miss being able to go to Times Square where there are TWO 25-screen cineplexes directly across the street from each other.

I am bumping this back up because I was wondering if anyone has seen the Elizabeth movie yet? I had been watching the commercials for Beowulf too, is this more animated or what?

I went to go see Elizabeth opening night and I LOVED it.  I do agree with some of the critics that the script was lacking a certain something, but visually the film was stunning.  Gorgeous costumes.  And as for the acting ... I would be highly surprised if Cate Blanchett didn't receive an Oscar nomination.  She added a whole new layer of depth and conflict to the character from the first film.

the preview for the new alien vs predator 2 movie makes it look  like a good escapist/splatter/horror flick

I want to go see resident evil 3 too, that looks good :-)

I'm really waiting for angels & demons, the second of dan browns books to be made into a movie, Prince Caspian (second of the Narnia series) is meant to be out sometime in 2008 as well

a really good source of information on up and coming  moving releases is http://www.darkhorizons.com

Rob Zombie's Halloween - saw it opening weekend and thought it rocked!  It was good like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel.

Resident Evil 3 - horrible reviews but I was pleasantly surprised (love zombie movies the most)

30 Days of Night - I was a little disappointed but it wasn't bad.  I could see how this movie made a great book.  Perhaps a little better acting, a set that looks like the Arctic and more character development...

Saw IV - I will never tire of this series.  I can't wait!

Alien vs Predator 2 - again, can't wait.

Finally, someone who liked Rob Zombie's Halloween other than me. Actually I wasn't crazy about the Texas Chainsaw prequel other than how Leatherface came to be. When it comes to the Resident Evil Trilogy, I like it because I am a fan of the game but wishes that they would've followed more along the lines of the game when it came to the characters. They did great with the monsters. I see a part 4 coming because of how 3 ended but thinks they are going to milk it for all it is worth. Since they introduced 2 characters from the game on part 3.

I am like you with the Saw series but am wondering how 4 is going to be since dude is now dead. They are making it seem like dude started a school of torture or something and now has followers. I am looking forward to the Stephen King movie coming out called The Mist. I am hoping for something gory from him. I didn't know about Alien vs Predator 2. The last one was ok, liked it cause I liked the actress Sanaa Lathan but also liked how the Predators kinda respected her for surviving it all.

I am also looking forward to the next episode in the Batman series called The Dark Knight. I liked the last one because they explained why he took on the persona of a bat besides his parents death. Christian Bale also makes an excellent Batman too after the failed attempt by Clooney.

Well this is a throwback but I finally saw Starship Troopers last night, and while I totally get the campy message, it seems that Denise Richards totally was left out of the joke...

and I totally understand why Charlie Sheen drank and eventually left her...

and while she was fighting those space bugs she should've been fighting those caterpillars above her eyes...

she was really trying to get deep into her role but the closest she came was that Deep Space Nine hairdo...

I could go on but I almost broke up with my boyfriend over this movie...until he noticed that Rue McClanahan is in it!

Thanks for that link, Aunty. And I thought I was the only one who like Zombie's Halloween. I like how it showed what life could've been like in the Myer household. The reason behind Michael being a bit off. I agree with the guys on there that there is more to horror than just teens having sex and getting axed before they bust a nut. Or you have the gore but no real storyline..... :-*

Man, I hate to say it but Saw IV sucked.  The story was way too complicated and loosely linked.  The gore wasn't even that good and the killing scenarios were tired.  I guess the best of the series ended at Saw III.

On the flip side, I was pleasantly surprised by Hostel II this weekend.  I really didn't like the original but have to say they improved upon it quite a bit in the sequel with showing the perspective of the killers.

We just went and saw The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D and really enjoyed that. The effects were very snazzy!  ;D (but there's another thread on that)

I'm wondering about that "30 days of nights". There's nothing better than a GOOD vampire movie.  ;)

Jeromy and I saw 30 Days on Saturday and I really liked it.

It's definitely one of the better horror movies in a while.  Great gore and not afraid to play it like a straight horror vs. tongue in cheek.

Iggy: sounds good. I'll trust you on this one then and go see it next. ;)

I saw posters out for "IronMan", and "Narnia 2: Prince Caspian" that I need to read about more. Oh and another Indiana Jones? Isn't hot Sean Connery too old now? And Harrison Ford? Hans Solo no more  :( LOL

I like Tim Burton so I would like to see the new animated Christmas movie as well...One of the last movies I actually saw on cable was Hostel and I guess I'm getting too old for this sort of stuff but it was somewhat frightening and at least there was a story to it even though Tarantino is a bit nutty to me at this point in my life.  I did like the lead male character Jay Hernandez, I think it was???

The goriness of hostel made me flinch a few times but the storyline sucked for me. If they wanted some ass they should've stayed in the states. They could've used a condom, gotten all the ass they wanted and still be alive or the alternative could've been that they might have gotten some stds or even infected but they still would've been alive. I do want to see Hostel 2 but hopes that they improved the storyline. Jay Hernandez is fine as hell, loved him in Carlito's Way Rise to Power.

Hmm, well I was wondering how they could carry it off with the main character being killed in 3. Loosely linked, huh after how the link 3 together so well. Bottom line is that they did a rush job or so it sounds like to me. I will have to get my hands on Hostel 2 and agrees with you that one was quite disappointing with the storyline but Jay Hernandez was nice to look at... ;)

Hey Queenie...

I too am a avid movie "watcher"....(having been a Gold Card Member of Blockbuster and other video stores and sites for over twenty years.)
Of course there are some movies you have to see on the big screen.  The sequel to Elizabeth was one of them.  And although the critics panned the
film personally I enjoyed it.  Cate Blanchett was fabulous in the role...as was Helen Mirren and others in the past.  There have been many films on Queen
Elizabeth's rule/ life...for truly she did usher in the Golden age.  England became the wealthiest and most prosperous nation on earth during her rule.

Having viewed literally thousands of films during the past twenty some odd years ...
I still enjoy seeing a good flick.  So much so I have a 52" HD TV with a Bose's system and I watch anywhere from
20-30 films a week.  However when it comes to slasher movies I draw the line...  David loved horror films and I enjoy
some of them (nothing like a good scary movie sometimes) but movies that simply glorify the taking of human life...
I just can't sit through them.  Give me a film with good dialogue or a great storyline or exceptional special effects and I'm
hooked.

I am still trying to see the sequel to Elizabeth, I am glad that you found it to be good. I think I will like it as well. I could never afford a 52' tv but I am looking into getting surround sound for my bedroom since I seem to dwell in it more than any other room in the house. But what can I say, I like to be comfortable... ;D

I have goals set in place for a bigger tv, a playstation 3 or Xbox 360. I have even opened up another bank account to save money but I do have priorities. First things first is getting money saved for another car so the other stuff will have to be put on hold. I am just glad I have something to look at and more than 3 channels...
