Can the site STOP these survey pop-ups?
« on: December 02, 2009, 07:50:50 am »
It was a tad annoying when it would pop up just once a session -- now I am getting the damned thing everytime I enter a different forum or go back from a thread.  Is this something that has been "OK'd" by the site or is this some sort of nefarious bit of software that has spread to all members?
It is not be recoginized by my spyware or virus software.  I know that someone (Leatherman??) mentioned downloading some software to get rid of it, but I'm not a big fan of adding additonal programs to my computer -- but quite frankly it is driving me nuts now!

thanks,
Mike

Mike ,

I am also getting these annoying pop-ups, and it's only happening, when I come to this site.  Leatherman mentioned it here:

http://forums.poz.com/index.php?topic=29993.0

Can something be done about this ?

Thanks----Ray

Just wanted to add...

It happens in either IE 8 or Firefox. If I don't delete cookies , or cache, it stops.  The minute temp internet files and cookies are deleted, the pop-up immediately shows again.

Was driving me nuts too -- every time I did anything on the site.  But in IE 8 under the tools tab there is a "Pop up Blocker" --  turn it on and they are gone.  And it is a temporary adjustment, you can turn it back off after you leave the site

The minute temp internet files and cookies are deleted, the pop-up immediately shows again.
ah, and there's the rub. ;) It's obviously reading (or sometimes mis-reading) a cookie that is being stored.

I found that if I logged on the forum page and got the popup and simply used BACK after reading a post, that I got the popup over and over and over. But after I re-typed in the forum url and came back to the forum listing page technically a "second" time, I didn't get the popup. (So if you have a link to the forums, try using that link a 2nd time and hopefully that'll resolve the issue for you.... at least temporarily ;))

You should also be able to use the popup blocker to only block popups per site. I can't remember enough to turn that on and off when I enter and leave sites. LOL I normally hate doing that for a site I actually trust, cause usually I expect that any popup they might use might actually be important. but in this case, I might just block all popups from forums.poz.com.

Of course, as soon as I clear out the cache or shut down my computer, the whole process will start over again. I have been finding the safecount survey all over the net and it's really the dumbiest tracking survey I've run across and the most annoying. At least for this site, it isn't a seperate layer on the page, so the damn notice comes swooping across the page blocking everything everytime I visit.

When I was using a PC last week at my parent's house I noted that Google Chrome totally blocked this pop up.  It's also blocked on Safari with a Mac.

This is an approved ad. It's bringing revenue to the site to enable us to continue our presence here. And by "us", I mean those of us who depend on this site for support and information. :)

It has been discovered that the frequency setting was incorrect - and it has now been corrected to pop-up no more than once every twelve hours.

It was driving me nuts too.

wonder what it's trying to count though? does answering the survey multiple times not invalidate the survey? Or should we answer it as often as possible to bring in truck loads of moolah?  ??? ;D

It was driving me nuts too.
