Atripla Rash
« on: August 05, 2012, 01:36:59 am »
So I began taking Atripla a little over a month ago and the first few days were pretty bad, but afterwards I felt fine. I can say even I felt normal after the 1st week.

A few days ago I developed a few red pimples behind my ears. They were somewhat itchy and now I've been seeing red pimples pop up in different places on my body. I looked up what an Atripla rash looks like and all I've been able to find were severe cases. Mine look nothing like them. I could probably count them with my fingers but I'm worried. Also, what I've read has led me to believe that the rash grows in patches. Mine are just like red whiteheads that pop up alone. I have three on my chest and one on each shoulder and like three more scattered on my back.

There are other factors that  could be causing the rash, for example:
I recently bought new covers and (cotton) pillows
I have been using a different type of shampoo

I don't know what to think because from what I've read the rash appears early and I've already been on Atripla for a full month. How does a "normal" Atrpla rash look like?

Hello welcome here.
I had different skin issues during my first months on antivirals. I just took them to the doctors, and let them figure out each time.  Is that possible for you?

If they are isolated little raised bright red bumps they might be "cherry angiomas" which are benign and harmless.  After I started Atripla I had a small outbreak of them.

I have a doctors appointment next week and this is an issue I will definitely bring up but I panic easily so I wanted to ask others.

I googled "cherry angiomas" and mine don't really look like that. The closest I can describe them to are ant bites. They begin as a red pimple and then develop a white head. They were really itchy last night but today they aren't as itchy. Some of the white heads have popped and pus came out just like an ant bite. Could these be hives?

Cherry Angiomas do not itch and do not have puss.

Have you tried taking an antihistamine (Benadryl?).  I had the "Atripla rash" about a week after I started, Benadryl helped and it cleared up after a couple days.

I read that Benadryl might help but I haven't taken it yet because I also read that it usually clears up by itself. It only started 2 days ago and like I said maybe I'm just a hypochondriac but I don't know...It's easy to freak out when things start happening to your body that you have no experience with.

@Buginme2 How did your Atripla rash look like? did they have white heads like ant bites?

My entire body itched like mad.  I wasnt red at first.  Then my entire chest and stomach turned red like a sunburn.  I took a Benadryl it went away and never came back.

From what I've read, Atripla rash most commonly occurs between day 8 and day 12, because the drug seems to screw with histamine that your body produces. My experience with a rash started on day 9, was considered a stage 2 to 3, and was closely monitored by a doctor to make sure that it wasn't Stevens-Johnsons Syndrome.  See if you can get an earlier appointment with a doctor.  If you could head off an allergic rxn with a histamine blocker, I am guessing that you would be better off.  Also, i was told to NOT use calamine lotion or alcohol. It dries the skin, and makes the problem worse. I was also advised not to use benadryl topical cream with benadryl caplets. Instead, consider using cortizone cream and benadryl caplets together.

The drugs in Atripla are no joke.  I think that if you are noticing something on your skin, I wouldn't ignore your instinct and get it checked out.

That's the one part I don't understand. I've been taking it for over a month and I had almost no problems. I'm going to email my doctor about it but it can take a week for him to reply (since nurses have to foreword the email) . I researched the SJS and once again my rash looks nothing like that. I don't have "sun-burned" looking patches or anything like that. They are just a few red scattered white heads that are kinda itchy.

There are other reasons people get skin issues early in treatment. Or because of HIV infection.  You are not a hypochondriac! Don't beat yourself up.  But yeah you need to get doctors to look and diagnose the skin problem and treat it if possible.
I was on and off anti histamines and various skin lotions and medicines for a number of skin problems that continued but only intermittently, a good year.  Hives, yes!

I don't think so. I doesn't look like ringworm.
Not knowing just drives me crazy :(
My family says it doesn't even look that bad and my boyfriend said to just take Benadryl and put cortizone cream on them and see how it goes. I just bought last night and have taken it today. I can't tell if it's working, I mean they're not as itchy but I still have the pimples.
