My first thought was Sanjay from Idol.

I don't have cable so I had no idea who this guy is. When I first heard it on the radio I thought the dj was joking around.

Does this mean Dr. Gupta will host a CNN reality show making singing house calls and sporting a 'faux-hawk?

If not, he's still an excellent choice for SxnGen: personable, popular, able to inspire consumers and Congress for health care needs, and easy on the eyes.

All the best to Sanjaya from Idol anyway.

Seriously, this is NOT good news. Gupta eviscerated Michael Moore's film on the depredations of the health-insurance industry. I wish I had more time to try to find a clip. He sounded exactly like a lobbyist for Big Pharma and Big Insurance.

Sanjay later corrected himself on some of his facts, and the fact he argued on the anachronistic Larry King Show doesn't bother me much. I've met him a couple of times over the years and not only is he a superb communicator but he is a strong advocate for both stem cell research and full AIDS education in schools, including prevention.

I know I'm probably going to get nailed for this opinion, but...

Just because he opposes socialized health care does not mean he's in anyone's pocket. Some people, including me, oppose socialism. I do not oppose socialism because I don't want people to be helped. I oppose it because it results in everyone losing freedoms and rights. The worst parent you could ever have is the US tax payer.

Now, before anyone thinks I'm an evil conservative, far from it. I'm very liberal socially and I absolutely abhor the Republican Party, the Religious Right and all who attempt to limit our rights and freedoms "for our own good."

And let's remember the quality question - y'know, the very real possibilities of quality going downhill. Maybe that's what I fear most. I don't know. Anyhue, there's going to be a healthcare analysis (of America's system) at 12:00 noon on CNBC today. Much of the show will focus on Barack Obama and expert expectations/predictions. (In fact, they bill the segment as "Will Obama Be A Healing Force for America's Health Care Issues?") At least one health insurance CEO is slated to comment.

What I think is this: Our health care "crisis" is caused by the very existence of insurance, not by a lack of insurance. Unlike any other industry, the health care industry is not bound to charging what the customer can bear, but what insurance will pay. This, combined with massive tort fraud, is the cause of inflated health care costs.

There was a time, just a few decades ago, when the vast majority of Americans did not have health insurance, and doctors based their rates on ability to pay, or went out of business. We are no healthier today then we were in the 60s and before (with the exception of new discoveries, of course). And yes, there were plenty of doctors and I dare say, medical care was just as, if not more readily available back then. Hell, doctors even made house calls. Now you're lucky to see an actual doctor, instead they give you a PA or NP.

So yes, I oppose any and all insurance schemes.

LBJ's Great Society was billed as a plan to end poverty. Not to ease it. It has, in fact, done neither.

It would be interesting to see some support for the above statement. Poverty rates among the elderly declined significantly as a result of the enactment of Medicare. Prior to the enactment of Medicare poverty rates were highest among the elderly -- after Medicare the elderly were less likely to be poor than other age groups.

The statement that "we are no healthier today than we were in the 60s and before" is also debateable given the increase in life expectancy between the 60's and today (about 4 to 5 years longer life spans).

It's true that insurance pays doctors a lot more now than they used to be paid. But as Uwe Reinhardt has pointed out, doctor payments are only about 10% of medical costs. And presumably some of that higher payment reflects the fact that life expectancy has gone up and reflects better pay for better value.

Regarding quality declines, note that health outcomes in the US are worse than in many countries with "socialized medicine". It is possible that we could change our health care system in ways that could worsen matters, but not inevitable.
