New dates for AMG and attendence
« on: March 11, 2008, 08:19:56 pm »
Hi everyone

13th--20th August.

Having seen the difficulties that our first choice of dates for our AMG were causing, due to the IAC and lack of Hotel rooms , I think it would be a lot easier for us with the dates mentioned above..and it would be (hopefully) at lot easier for Dennis as I'm sure there will be more Hotels available on those dates...I hope I'm not stepping out of line here, but we need to do this now...we need to get tickets booked and some need to change their tickets before it's too late so I'm locking in this date for this years AMG I hope this will be ok with everyone.

So can you please post in this thread if these dates are suitable and if you are going to be attending the AMG this year.

I know we have a thread going already about who is going to attend..I will see if I can get permission to *sticky* this one and will  * unsticky* (is there such a word?) the other ones, so please use this thread from now on..for the dates and attendence...thanks guys.

Edited because I meant to say "sticky" the thread not lock it
Hugs
Jan :-*

Yes for Jeromy and I, though I don't think we can afford cost/time of the full seven days - we will work out our actually days of stay within that time frame.

Thanks for taking the lead here, Jan.

Yes, as your co whateveritisweare, I wholeheartedly agree and support this idea.

I am already looking for airline tickets, hopefully incluidng a trip that doesn't include a six-hour layover in Houston.

At any rate, good show Jan.

Hi Gang:

I'm sorry the earlier dates weren't possible -- but this really isn't surprising, given the tens of thousands of people converging on Mexico City for the International AIDS Conference.

I'm also sorry that I won't be able to catch up with all of you in Mexico City. While it certainly wasn't a problem extending my conference stay by a few days, it's not going to possible for me to return to Mexico City a second time over a two-week period.

I'm sure this year's AMG will be an incredible experience for all those who are attending and I look forward to seeing the gathering take form and unfold.

As an ex-Chilango, please keep me in the loop, if I can be of any assistance at all.

Cheers to all,
Tim

Thanks guys, lets hope we get a good attendence again this year.

Tim

Thank you and I'm sorry the guys will not get the chance to meet you..I know there were quite a few who were looking forward to this, we certainly understand why this is not possible this year...but I hope I will get the chance to catch up with you again sometime during the IAC, I know it will be a busy time but I will be keeping my eyes open.

Oh and RAB..you can just call me "Madam".. ;)

Yes, I will be there.  13Aug  (Wed.) to 20Aug.

I'll definitely arrive on 13 (Wed) but probably leave on the 17th(Sunday) or the 18 (Monday).

Mark...I understand about not staying 7 days.  That's a long time.  I would recommend arriving 14 Aug (Thurs) and leave on 17 Aug (Sun).  That makes for a nice long weekend.  Traditionally, we have held our AMG Memorial on Friday morning and our "Meet and Greet" get-together where we ALL gather for cocktails on Friday night.

I can't wait to meet you and Jeromy.

It's $40 more expensive to fly out of Newark to MC than it is to fly out of Philadelphia, though the flights out of Newark are non-stop (5 hrs) and the ones from Philly take 8 hours because you change in Houston.

The Philly flights are about $360 RT at the moment.  How much are the rest of you slackers shelling out?

Hey Philly:

Before deciding to use mileage (which ended up costing me just under $150.00 with the change fee), the cheapest fare I found from the NW required me flying all the way to Charlotte NC.  ::) (Like that was going to happen!    >:() The best itinerary would have cost me just under $500.00 ($486.00 I think).

Sounds like you've got a couple of pretty affordable options.  If it were me, I'd pay the extra $40.00 and fly out of Newark.  (5 hrs vs 8 hrs?) Yep, that's what I'd do.

So Mister, does this mean your coming to MC?

Yes, but it costs $60 on Amtrak to get to Newark airport (plus the $10 taxi to the train station from my apartment), and then you have to transfer to the monorail to the terminal.  Or, a cheaper route is to take the SEPTA commuter line to Trenton for $8, then switch to NJ transit from there to Newark (another $9.25) and then hop on the monorail.

Dunno... sounds like a bit of effort and expense.  I can handle and 8 hour flight if I have copious amounts of klonopin, and I assure you I only fly with pills.  Anyway, I'm sure I can spend the 2 hour lay over in Houston practicing my Wide Stance.

Actually now that I think about it maybe I'll check flights from Dulles Airport -- then I could fit in a couple days visit with my parents, and they live only 15 minutes from the airport.  Plus my father will drive up to Philly to fetch me.

Little Miss Mini and I still plan on attending.  Haven't gotten airline tickets yet, trying to find the most direct / and cheapest route.  I really don't want to "run" through an airport, dragging Mini (who, by the way, can't run) the whole time.  Does anyone know if airlines provide for special needs?  Also, anyone have a favorite airline?  I haven't flown since 1998 and a bit nervous.  Anyone else looking at flying out of Pittsburgh?

Hi Mum and Mini,

So glad to hear that you are planning to attend.  There are many of us looking forward to meeting both of you.  Mini will be a star for sure!!!

We have a favorite airline but when flying international it is not unusual to switch to one with the best price and best connections.  As for special accommodations are concerned, wheel chairs are readily available and you will be given special pre-boarding privileges.  (The gate agents always let us pre-board since I use a cane.)  Just let the airlines know what your special needs are when you make your reservations and they will take good care of you and your special traveling lassie.

Hugs to you both from Ric & Thom

Looks like Continental and Delta are probably your two best bets out of Pittsburgh.  I like this site for checking airfares:

http://www.sidestep.com/

And don't worry about having to run through an airport with Mini.  Once you pick your airline, just notify them that you'll need a skycap to get to and from the gates and they'll bring one of those nifty little carts for you guys to ride on.  It'll be a piece of cake.

Mum  as you settle on an airline be aware that they can be very accommodating..even provide special meals if you desire...  in today's airlines they charge for everything so don't be shocked if they ask you to pay for a sandwich....my recommendation is to bring your lunch and get anything else that airlines provides for free including better seating and help getting through the airport....

We looked at Continental and they have 2 flights leaving Pitts.  Both have a layover in Houston - 1 is only 35 minutes and the other is 2hrs 5 minutes.  We're going to book the one with the longer layover.  That will allow us time for lunch and potty.  My biggest fear is missing our connecting flight, so the longer layover is worth it.  On the way back, we're opting for leaving Mexico earlier - about 7:10am so we can get in about 4pm to Pitts.  We'll still have about a 4hr drive home.  Our only other option is to arrive in Pitts after 9pm.  I don't drive well at night.  So, that's pretty much our schedule.  Just need to decide when we're arriving and leaving.

Can't wait to see you all there!

Philadelphia cheapest flight $435
Newark $502
JFK $361
Baltimore $391

WOW! Prices sure have gone up in the last 2 months. I recall a flight out of LaGuardia for $270--that was in February.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by this hike. It was and is inevitable.
Skybus has announced on it's web site that they are ceasing operations as of April 5th; no more flights. They can't cut it at base fare pricing.

::recession::

predicted a year ago

LGA - MEX is $491

JFK is $351 -- I could take a bus there ($23) and still get the cheapest, and it's non-stop -- save myself $60... but it's a bit of a hassle

OK... I just bit the bullet and purchased my airfare to Mexico City.  Horiby expensive, considering that taxes alone run $100... actual ticket cost was $423 RT on Continental with with layovers of 2.5 hours in Houston.  At last I get mileage on that airline as I already have enough with them to fly to France twice :)

Hey, Philly, sounds like we're on the same flight, or may be once we hit Houston.  We're flying Continental out of Pittsburgh - for about double what you're paying - with a 2hr 5 minute layover in Houston.  Just looked for the frazzled lady with the very happy go-lucky little Miss who's talking to everyone in the crowd, sporting a Dora backpack and black Converse hightops.

I'm flying Continental all the way to MC, with 2 hour layovers in Houston.  The flight number for the 2nd league is CO1824, arriving at 8pm.  Then I'll prep quickly and head out in search of boys.

For some reason I get the feeling that a total of 5 people are attending.

Girl, you better make your list and check it twice!

I see a few you missed...allanq, cayucosguy (did i spell that right?)

Oh, and...um...Francis!  Yes, Francis (Fireman73).  There may be others that I overlooked.

Still don't know if I am going to be able to go this year or not.  Some family stuff coming up this summer and I just don't know yet.  If I happen to get an affirmative nod, I'll post here immediately.

23 and counting.  I already counted Dennis and Mike M. (who's graciously offered to collect me and the Wee One from the airport).

Didn't mean to start a riot, though.  I have been properly chastized and will now slink back into my corner and enjoy my tall glass of chocolate milk.

At this hour?  Don't you think maybe it's a bit early for chocolate milk?

Do we need an intervention?

Tally these listed plus there are about six "maybes" in the wings....lurking about...still weighing their options, I guess.
Not a shabby attendance total, I'd say. Needless to say, the more the merrier!
