scared and worried, and I don't know what to do
« on: July 18, 2007, 01:05:11 am »
About 1 week ago I an my first homosexual encounter with another guy my age (20 years old).  I performed unprotected oral sex on him for about 15 seconds maximum and he did NOT ejaculate in my mouth.  I did however taste something salty which I assume was pre ejaculate.  And now, just a week later, I have a sore throat.  I went to the doctor because I also noticed red bumps in my throat and around my uvula (hanging ball) and I also saw one on my cheek near my gum line.  She prescribed me amoxicillin and this is going on my second day on the antibiotic.

I am terrified that I might have had an exposure to HIV.  My partner claims he has no STD, but has not been tested.  I am scared and I don't know what to do.  can these symptoms be from HIV even though they appeared not even a week after my encounter?  Do I need to be concerned?

No, these are not signs and symptoms of HIV. You didn't have a risk.

Please read our lesson on Transmission. There's a link to it in the Welcome thread which opens this section.

There is much, much more evidence that sucking is NOT a risk than that it is, especially if ejaculation doesn't take place orally.

Becoming sexually active can be very exciting -- and it also often stirs up a lot of anxiety about all sorts of things including HIV and health issues. If you follow the safer sex guidelines consistently you will be ok as far as HIV is concerned.

In general I urge you to go at a pace you are comfortable as you continue to explore your sexuality in whatever direction that takes you.

This time out I don't see any cause for concern nor for testing. If your sore throat persists you can give your doctor a call and discuss it.

Cheers,
Andy Velez

thanks a lot for the responses.  I must say this has calmed my fears quite a bit, but it still hasn't alleviated all of them.  I am such a hypochondriac...and I don't know how to get OVER this fear even though I read everwhere that you can't really get it by giving oral and that both of you said I really had no risk...I just wish I could be SURE.

one more thing...my left tonsil is a little weird looking and when I swallow I can tell there is a little stiffness in the left side of my throat still.

I am freaking out here.  is it too soon for me to be experiencing these symptoms?  All of this has happened, and it still hasn't been 2 weeks since my possible exposure.  It has only been 12/13 days.

when can I get tested and how do the tests work?  Would you recommend testing?  Do i have to give blood, etc?

You didn't have a risk and if you would have, yes. Symptoms or lack of doesn't mean a thing when diagnosing HIV. If you have a concern with your health see your doctor.

abc,

While you weren't at risk for hiv in your fifteen second oral encounter with a penis, it is possible that you were exposed to gonorrhea. Gonorrhea in the throat is on the rise. If you're concerned about this, go have your throat swabbed for gonorrhea.

I agree with the others that this is not an hiv situation.

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts

thanks for the help everyone.  I'm going to look into gonorrhea.

but today I am feeling a lot better.  A positive outlook on things can make a world of difference.

I just dont know what I would tell my parents if I had gonorrhea.  what in the world would I say
