Welcome to Do I Have HIV?

Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Condom broke while having sex

Hi all,

I was drunk one night and and brought a call girl back. We proceed to have sex with condom on. Half way through I felt felt different and I pulled out. I saw that the condom was torn leaving my penis exposed. I then wore a new condom and did it again. I came and when I took out, I saw that this condom was broken too. The whole process lasted about 5 minutes or 10 max. Now I'm really worried. I I thought about the PEP option and do not know if I should go for it as it's been 2 days. Pls advise. Thanks in advance.

Well, though you are still within the technical 72 hour window period for PEP, it is not something I would personally recommend. You have had a risk, but it is absolutely on the smaller side of the scale.

As the insertive partner, your vulnerable area is FAR smaller than that of a female/receptive partner. Your urethra and, if you are uncircumsized, certain dendritic cells around the head of your penis are susceptible to HIV infection. That having been said, I have been on this website for over ten years giving out safer sex information and risk assessment, and I have YET to see the insertive partner test positive after a condom break, with or without PEP.

I am pretty confident you are not going to be the first.

That having been said, it would be wise to get tested. A test at six weeks is considered all but definitive, but the global standard remains three months - which is fortunately also the window period for syphilis, so you might as well go ahead and get a full STD panel done while you are at it.

And, of course, I always encourage every sexually active person who is not in a mutually monogamous relationship to get a full STD panel twice a year regardless.

I honestly think you are going to come through this ok, but I am worried about the multiple condom failures. You might want to reference one or both of the links below to make sure things are happening correctly.

Many thanks for the reply. I am circumcised. My exposure time is probably about 5 minutes. What are my chances of infection?

Thanks for the reference links. I must have not worn them properly due to the alcohol. I'll read up...
